View Full Version : New Z4 owner
Sage97 08-22-2005, 02:00 PM Hi guys! Great forum!
Just purchased an 04 Z4 3.01 with premium, sports and convenience packages. So far, I think I have got a great car and am quite proud of it. I do have one area of mild dissatisfaction - the premium sound system isn't quite as nice as I had hoped it would be. I think installing my Clarion DZX925 head unit would ruin the aesthetics of the dash. Hence the Clarion is now for sale. Has anyone here tried upgrading their sound system? If so, I would very much appreciate it if you could share your upgrades so I can get ideas on where to start.
Thanks in advance.
Roman 08-22-2005, 02:40 PM Congratsulations on a great car.
I for one think the sound system is excellent in my Z4. Plenty of clean volume and clear separation from low to high end.
Each to his/her own though . . .
Sage97 08-22-2005, 02:49 PM You're right about personal tastes. I'm not just totally unhappy with it but I wouldn't call it excellent either. I guess I got accustomed to my previous Honda set up with an Infiniti amp driving the sub and the other speakers.
This is out of topic but do you play guitar too?
Sage97 08-24-2005, 05:24 PM I've got it!
The local shop transferred my Infinity amp and sub from my old Honda to the Z4. They also built a new box for it. This nice box fits the Z4 trunk perfectly. I still have plenty of room for groceries, basketballs and other stuff and also allows very easy access to the batteries if needed. Most importantly, it made the bass a lot "tighter" and not all over the place. Sounds awesome inside the Z4 without bothering the cars next to me.
Very happy now. No need to replace front speakers, replace the head unit or add EQ or anything. Well at least for now.
Just thought I'd share it with you guys.

Congrats on the car...I'm surprised you feel that way about the stereo if it is the "Carver" system. I thought it was pretty darn good for a car system and I'd like to think that I'm an audiophile.
Born2Slow 08-24-2005, 09:56 PM I too just got my Z4 in June. I love everything about the car...the only thing that concerned me at first was that some of my burned cd's did not seem to work with the premium audio system. One of my buddies said it was most likely due to the fact that since it is a carver system...high end...that it may be a little "sensitive" to sampling rates that are used when burning a cd on the computer...who knows. I haven't had any issues in a while with the radio!!
I am otherwise completely impressed with the car!
Will be taking it to the track (NHIS) on monday for the SCDA track day. :D

It may be the "type" of CD - i.e. CD-R vs. CD+R (I think) vs. CD-RW vs. etc..
i've had no problems at all with CD-R.
What's SCDA?

That's what the other guy said. But like I said, the Carver system with 10 HK speakers was not bad but I felt like it needed a little bit more oomph. Now that I have that oomph, I'm a happy z4 owner.

In audio, just like in car modding, loud != good.

Right on, my brother!

I bought different CD-R's (sony audio) and everything seems to be working just fine...
SCDA = Sports Car Driving Association. They are having a track day at the New Hampshire International Speedway on monday (8/29).

How much did that system run you?
If you think the sounds system in the Z4 leaves anything to be desired, test drive a Z3. Brings new meaning to the expression «crappy stereo».

I just transferred the system from my 97 Accord. I put it in the Accord in a few years back and I think it was a little over a grand. I'll see if I can take pics soon. I love the way it sounds but then again I do not consider myself an audiophile. You may get dissapointed when you see since I really don't think it is all that.
