Alrighty here's the story. I spoke with Mike at OCW in regards to making a carbon fiber spoiler for Z3 and M coupes. I lent him the piece from my car for molding, but they won't begin manufacturing unless several more people request it. I'm setting up a list and as soon as we get at least 10 they'll get started.

The spoiler will have an OEM-look and will simply replace the original. As of now, the third brake light will be omitted, unless enough people request it to be included. But if that's the case, the price will increase. Without the light, it will probably be about $250-$300.

Anyone else interested?

I'll post in the Z3 forum as well to draw more prospective buyers.

Isn't it kinda illegal to drive around without a 3rd brake light?

Some people tell me it is, some say it isn't. Not entirely sure on that one. :dunno

I don't mean to poop on your parade, but there's a couple things that will keep people from buying.

1. How much weight does it save? The stock spoiler can't weigh more than 5lbs, so the most you'll save is 4lbs.

2. $300 is a lot of yak for a 4lb. savings. And this doesn't include painting and install for those less mechanically inclined.

3. Mike better rethink selling a 3rd brake light delete item. The U.S. gov'ment might not like that, not to mention the potential lawsuits from buyers.

If this was < $200 and included the fitting for the 3rd light, it would be much more attractive to people.

But that's just my opinion.

1. I don't think it'll save a whole lot of weight. I was going for this for mainly a cosmetic standpoint.

2. Installation is simple. The spoiler is held down by three hex nuts and some adhesive that is easily removed. As for painting, some might want the CF showing.

3. I'll relay that info to him. I was really in favor of a third light as well. Mike's argument was that it'd raise prices because the mold would be more difficult.

I agree with what you're saying, and I'd like some more opinions before I relay the info to Mike.

So what if it was made from FG instead of CF? That would reduce the cost significantly, right?

I would consider something that was slightly larger than normal. Kinda like the ACS(?) spiler that fits over the OEM spoiler. It extends it about 4" more, but still looks factory.

I think something like that, for a cheaper price, would appeal to more people than a CF OEM replacement that is $$$$.

Currently working on the top piece of the wing with incorporated 3rd light.
Top piece will be cf or identical plastic like oem. I am big oem fan but like a bit more attitude in the wing so I will design end with a little more pronounced lift than oem. No too big like Honda Civic Duck Bill but just to show that its diff. than oem.

I will keep you posted.

for things like spoiler you pay for the craftsmanship to get good looks in cf not just about weight.

Anyone can make a Light CF spoiler but it takes Good Skill to get the Weave looking good.

It is a Hand made limited item after all. They spend alot of time molding the silicone

Tons of items are sold as " off road " use only and it is up to the buyer to take responsibility if it is illegal to use on the street. That being said, if I like the spoiler and and want it then I'll buy it. Brake light or not. If you can get the brake light to work then I guess you'll be able to sell them to the buyers that are scared of the man and wash their hands twice after opening a door. :D

I don't really look forward to having one painted either because I've never been happy with any bodyshops work for me so it would show the cf.

You're right about the carbon fiber weave being an art. I sell cf hoods/trunks,etc. and there are huge differences in quality between manufacturers that I deal with.

Go for more agressive than the oem wing, otherwise what is the point? The duckbill style is a good idea. I think it would look nice and not too racecar-ish.
