Below for update.

I recently bought a used 2000 328I. It has 104K miles on it. It's a five speed stick.

Now, I am having the problem where when I shift between first and second, and second and third; I don't really notice it when I shift from third to forth or forth to fifth, but it is probably there. The problem is when I put in the clutch to shift, I hear a thud (pretty loud one), and when I let out the clutch after I shift, I hear another thud (about the same volume -- sound wise). I don't really notice any weirdness in regards to the actual shifting of gears.

Any ideas of advice? I'm contemplating taking it back to the dealership if it turns out to be something very costly to fix.

Thanks for your help.

Updated:

I just tested out running through all five gears, it does do the "thud" when shifting through all five gears.

Throw out bearing or Guibo.

What would exactly entail fixing it?

Someone also advised me that it could be a transmission mount. Thoughts?

Anyhow, I think I will take it by a transmission place in the morning.

Thank you,

I just took it to the transmission place and had a technician drive it. He said the transmission shifts perfectly fine, but it feels/sounds like a transmission mount.

When we drove at high accell/high rpm, it was more prevalent, but at low accell/rpm, it was nearly inexistant.

transmission mounts are easy to replace. two wrenches and a couple minutes.

The transmission place quoted me $500 - 600 for it. Please take in mind I am quite new to the concept of breaking open my car. :)

Is this something I could most likely do myself?

Thank you for your help,

Just got back from the Tranny place. It seems the problem is isolated to the rear of the car, rather than the tranny.

Possible the diff is coming loose from the subframe?
