View Full Version : Anyone know of any rentals in Bethesda?
Mikey52 08-18-2005, 01:55 PM I would like to move to Bethesda some time next month (for real this time :) ). Im currently scouring craigslist and have found a few possibilities. While I am waiting to hear back I figured I would see if anyone on here knows of any good places.
Im looking for a 1 bedroom (no roommates) for $1200 (with utilities) or less. I also need parking for two vehicles.
I will be working in Tysons come December and would prefer to live inside the beltway. I think Kensington represents about as far East and North as I would want to go. Silver Spring is too far. :)

I'm telling you ... your commute is going to be murder from Bethesda to Tyson's IMO. You'll be fighting 270 down to 495 traffic, then fighting it coming back. Live where it will be a reverse commute.
jkuper 08-18-2005, 02:55 PM Or live where you can walk to work :)
vrsixer 08-18-2005, 02:58 PM Move into VA... :D
VA > MD

I didnt think it would be too bad. I know that is the worst part of 495 but I wont be on it very long. I figured it would be 20 minutes on a good day, 40 on a bad. To see it from my point of view, my commute right now is the best ive ever had...at an hour and 15 minutes. So on a bad day I would still be saving 30 minutes over my current drive. :)
Also, I was thinking that if I could get inside the beltway, I would use this commute. (http://maps.google.com/maps?spn=0.050929,0.090835&saddr=5138+Massachusetts+Ave,+Bethesda,+MD+20816&daddr=tysons+corner,+va&hl=en) to avoid most of the traffic. Of course I would have to go the other way since the Clara Barton changes direction depending on the time of day.
Plus, MD > VA. Sorry.
NoSoup4U 08-18-2005, 03:39 PM I think you are being VERY optimistic with 20 minutes. I live MUCH closer to Tyson's and it would take me at least 20-30 minutes to get there (going normal speed) ... and that's a reverse commute.
I think it would avg. 40 minutes AT LEAST -- but, if you are cool with it, then that's fine. I personally think it will be around 1 hour one way. You need to drive it and determine if it's cool though. I would think, you would want a R/T commute of 1 hour or less ... IMO ... especially with gas prices. Longer commute = sitting in traffic = more money to spend.

Dude he has two cars, he is RICH. He doesn't care about gas prices :rolleyes

I agree with James. Wait till it rains or god forbid snows.
sKunkman 08-18-2005, 03:41 PM Takes me 40 minutes to go to vienna from springfield if I take the beltway.
So I take backroads...and it takes me ~30.
I assume your commute is about the same, learn the backroads and you should be good. I didn't look at your map....but its probably a good route. If you know MD and traffic patterns.
NoSoup4U 08-18-2005, 03:59 PM Takes me 40 minutes to go to vienna from springfield if I take the beltway.
Vienna to springfield is A LOT different commute IMO though ... that's like saying you are going from bethesda to gaithersburg ... not as popular work area as tysons is.
Vienna is far enough west IMO to avoid a lot of traffic and you have more options to go south ...
taking the highway to springfield HAS to be murder with the mixing bowl :)

Didn't you see the google maps? It said 16 minutes, not an hour. :nono ;)
My rule of thumb is to never put a river between me and work. The only exception is if you had a reverse commute, and unfortunately there's no such thing as a reverse commute into Tysons.
The Chain Bridge commute is probably the best bet since you'd be avoiding the American Legion Bridge, but I'd still go and drive the route one morning or evening to see how it really is.

Haha, that's a good rule of thumb.
What about Sterling to Tysons Corner? I had a local Evo guy just offer up his 3BR townhouse with 2 offstreet parking spots for $1k with utilities! How is the tollroad coming into DC in the morning? I get off at 28S so I dont know how bad it is further in.
magnetic1 08-18-2005, 07:54 PM Sterling to Tysons would SUCK too. You'd be battling Dulles Toll Rd traffic.
Bethesda -> Tysons is roughly 30-40 min.
Why dont you sell 1 car, and use the extra $ to live in Tysons... :stickoutt
Vienna might not be a bad place... look for some condos for rent near the Vienna metro... that would be 15-20 min and I think it SHOULD be around $1200.
Phat Ham 08-18-2005, 08:42 PM Why dont you sell 1 car, and use the extra $ to live in Tysons... :stickoutt I'm guessing he could probably find a place in Tysons for $1200. Maybe try Falls Church or McLean.
Jeff M3 08-19-2005, 01:47 AM Despite the fact that MD > VA commuting from MD to VA is horrible. Taking this into account I moved in with my girlfriend to have a close commute. My 20 mile route from Alexandria to Herndon took an hour on an average day.
Coming outerloop to Tysons is real bad from 270 to Tysons area. Commuting innerloop to Tysons is real bad from Braddock to 66.
Basically ... your best bet is pray that Jesus can take you to work in his private jet
Biggins 08-19-2005, 02:02 AM Last summer I commuted from Hagerstown to Rosslyn. :dunno Bethesda to Tysons doesn't seem THAT bad, but I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis.

good god, are you insane! And I'm worried about my new commute starting Wednesday about going from Reston to DC.

Hopefully the new exit ramp for the Toll Rd will ease the outer loop congestion... ALL that traffic is due to people trying to get over to the right to squeeze in for the exit... Why VA doesnt build another lane for the exit that stretches back further is beyond me. Once you pass the Toll Rd, its smooth sailing....

I avoid the mixing bowl by going on braddock rd. instead of Old Keene mill :)
I think the biggest problem with VA is that there is NO quick and easy way to get to work. Unless you own a barbershop and live upstairs.

I have a quick and easy route to work - and I drive through the mixing bowl every morning and evening. It takes me 30 minutes door to door driving south on 395 to 95 and then north again in the evening. Typically I'll stop at 2 or 3 traffic lights for at most 1 cycle. I encounter traffic slowdowns MAYBE once every two weeks. There are good commuting routes in this area, but you have to plan ahead and your work has to be flexible.
Phat Ham 08-19-2005, 10:13 AM I think the biggest problem with VA is that there is NO quick and easy way to get to work. Unless you own a barbershop and live upstairs. My drive is quick and easy. About 20 minutes, most of it on the GW parkway. There's almost never any traffic either.
Mikey52 08-19-2005, 10:35 AM Well, it looks like I am almost definitely going to take this place in Sterling. From what a couple of the guys there have told me, it takes them 15-20 minutes to get to Tysons. The guy who Ill be renting from said he goes to the airport in the morning so he comes out the express road and pays no tolls. :)
This place is just too good to pass up. 3BR townhouse to myself for $1k including utilities. :buttrock
Now, how soon after moving to VA do I have to become a resident?

Good god no!
The place I used to take the cobra to get worked on was in sterling. Trying to get there via the toll road anytime between 4 pm and 7 pm is horrendous. I'm talking like drive 10 feet... stop for 30 seconds... drive 10 feet... stop for 30 seconds... etc.
I would avoid that road at all costs.
The commute from bethesda to tysons would be pretty bad too though. Remember where my place was in kensington? From there to my work ( on sangamore rd -- right near the bethsda/dc line) would take 45-50 minutes. I would take the beltway from connecticut to the clara barton parkway. Tysons was easily another 20 minutes past that (in traffic).
Mikey52 08-19-2005, 11:32 AM Heh, I guess everywhere sucks then. :)
If it makes a difference, I will be working across from the Galleria so I wont ever have to cross 495. I was also thinking that Rt. 7 might be an alternative.
vrsixer 08-19-2005, 11:48 AM I was also thinking that Rt. 7 might be an alternative.Rt. 7 is nasty. I have to drive it every once and while from reston... bad news bears... :(

Haha, bad news bears. Oh well, Ill have a shorter commute than I do now and that's all that matters! :D
Phat Ham 08-19-2005, 01:55 PM the Galleria nobody calls it that. It's Tysons II.
Mikey52 08-19-2005, 02:01 PM nobody calls it that. It's Tysons II.
How about I call it, That Stupid Mall That's Going To Wreck Havoc On My Commute Come Christmas Time...II
How about that? ;)
Phat Ham 08-19-2005, 02:03 PM How about I call it, That Stupid RICH! Mall That's Going To Wreck Havoc On My Commute Come Christmas Time...II
fixed it
you wouldn't have a found what you were looking for in bethesda anyway, you would have had to pay more and at that point you might as well have paid to live in vienna, probably the same rent levels....
sterling to tysons...yikes
jeff
Mikey52 08-21-2005, 07:15 PM sterling to tysons...yikes

Haha, everyone keeps saying that but an Evo guy does that commute everyday and he says it isnt that bad. :)
I went to look at it today and it is really nice! I will be happy there. :D
Phat Ham 08-21-2005, 08:58 PM Haha, everyone keeps saying that but an Evo guy does that commute everyday and he says it isnt that bad. :) He's also trying to sell you a house.
