Hello, you guys all rock. My question is, is it a "direct" and easy replacement to replace my carburetor '02 engine w/ 4 speed transmission with a tii fuel injection engine w/ 5 speed transmission? Will it directly replace nicely, or are there any modifications or "heavy modifications" required? Do you all know where I can purchase the complete tii turbo fuel injection engine with 5 speed transmission?

I dont think there is too much to be done to swap in a Tii engine, but I have never dealt with one.

Here's what is needed to do the 5 speed conversion. It includes shortening the driveshaft.

EDIT: Heres the link the the FAQ http://www.bmw2002faq.com/engine_and_drivetrain/five_speed_conversion.html

"Direct" - I would say yes the parts fit if you buy a complete TII engine, fuel tank, fuel pump and E21 3 series up to 1980-1982 Getrag 245 five speed transmission with adapter kit and a shortened drive shaft to match.

"Easy Replacement" - is only if you hire somebody to do it. It's a pretty hefty undertaking.

"Heavy Modifications" - most of it is bolt in with the exception of the wiring harness mods to make the fuel pump and cold start regulator circuit work and if you don't use a ready made adapter kit for the 5 speed.

Purchase a complete setup? No. In my opinion, it would be easier to buy 2002tii with all the items you described already equipped.

Good luck!

I agree with Keith, it's a direct fit but not easy by any means.

He pointed out all the key components so if your mechanically inclined it is not terribly difficult, it's just going to require some work.

I have a good tii motor, tii tank (both early and late) and fuel pump I will part with if you really want to try the swap.

have you thought about switching your 02 to a 318 FI system and adding a few extra mods including the 5 speed swap?
