View Full Version : not a kill...but read it anyway
jayanticoli 08-15-2005, 07:01 PM well the night started at tgi fridays and my buddy who i work with just traded his 03 cobra for an 03 evo was with me and some other people.... we were headed to a house party and had to take two short highways to get there so we barrle down the on-ramps screwin around and i never really thought about racing him cause i thought he would kill me but then i notice there was no one in front of us for miles and i see him pull up next to me....he calls my cell and says put it into third at 60 and lets go on the honks.... so i was like eh what the hell....downshift into 3rd at sixty we get even 3 hionks and i have it wide open ...dead even with him all the way through 3rd i hit frouth at 6500rpms...still dead even up to about 4500rpms in fourth and he starts to pull on me... so at 110 in fourth right before we both slammed our brakes for our exit i was at his passenger side frt door (he didn't pull too much) is this right?? i only have an exhaust and intake..however he is stock with a blow-off valve and he does know how to drive so i dunno... i thought for sure he would pull away from me instantly any opinions??? i think i wanna try it from a dig oh and we both had no passengers
E36pusher 08-15-2005, 07:14 PM Hmm that doesnt seem right but anything is possible I guess maybe u just shifted at perfect points and he wasted some of his power but he should have beat you by more from what I hear about EVOs they are pretty fast and should easily take a 325.
JFV1134 08-15-2005, 07:16 PM Yes, there was a kill. HE killed YOU. to qoute f and the f:
It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile; a win is a win!
giterdone 08-15-2005, 07:36 PM wtf? you're in a 325 and he didn't pull? Hahah, damn.
You do not wanna try it from a dig. I am even with a stock evo up top, down low, it is murder (for me).
HeLLroT325iS 08-16-2005, 12:11 AM He was probably just messing with you. I rode in a EVO and our cars are not even close. He has 50% more HP than you in a car that weighs about the same. :nono I dont think you could mess up your sifts bad enough to lose in that car.
mazur 08-16-2005, 12:19 AM Are you sure he didn't buy a OZ Rally Lancer in disguise?
rsagona1 08-16-2005, 12:30 AM I only raced an evo one time. I had 2 other passengers in my car, the Evo had one. Off the line he beat me and I couldnt regain my ground, but he wasn't pulling much. Then we went from 40mph. I had a small jump, and about 40-80 he couldn't pull. Top speed I guess I'm even with them.
StealthM2O 08-16-2005, 12:44 AM ....dont forget, AWD only helps till about 45 - 50 mph, then its just extra weight being pulled...
IRoman 08-16-2005, 02:10 AM Im a newbie to the BMW world, my last car was a civic hatch with a b16 (its a DOHC VTEC w/about 160 HP) my hatch was quick and I could beat mustangs untill about 80 (The b16 really isnt good for torque) After I got my 93 325i. I didnt really know how it compared to other cars, I just know this car pulls awesome even if your doing 80 mph and it would have owned my last civic, well I pulled up beside an evo and I was just amazed at how hard that car pulled on me  , I was definetly impressed.
I have also had a Dodge SRT pull on me like I was nothing, I didnt expect that eithier. I havent really raced anybody else since then, except for an integra and I only passed them at 120 because they were trying to act like there car was all bad and I just wanted to show them it wasnt, and to remind them that they have no torque :nono
That was all stock, since then I have added a remus and I have a Cosmos coming and Im playing with the idea of chip, well see
Evel Knievel 08-16-2005, 04:39 AM evos get a better start from standstill cos they got 4WD. yeah, generally an evo would beat without a 325 wihout any sruggle.
Maybe u shift your gears better than you think. ;)
sportcarm3 08-16-2005, 04:44 AM If he just got the car he probably is breaking it in, can't go over 5k when breaking them in.
jayanticoli 08-16-2005, 07:44 AM i know for a fact he shifted almost perfectly and he is not breaking it in casue he got it used with 7k on it maybe the universe was aligned just right for me that night haha

just becuase the car feels faster doesn't mean it is. That is what torque does, it sucks you in the seat.

I think I am miunderstanding this post. Are you implying that Torque only makes a car feel faster but does not actually make it faster? :confused
fgraziano 08-16-2005, 11:23 AM no he's just saying that, torque makes the car feel faster. any turbo car gives you that feeling since the torque is so flat and constant, most people are not used to that "pushed in the seat" feeling and assume the car is sooooooooooo fast when in actuality it's just an uncommon feeling. When i first modded my s4 it felt so incredibly fast but after time you become used to it and if feels slow again, even when you are at like 400hp. it's all perception until you're side by side with another evenly matched car. Then you can tell if it's "fast" or not.

and/or your friend's evo is down on power. Boost leak maybe? Maybe he's sandbagging to get you to throw down some money on another race :D
Gotcha. I was a little confused. Torque plays a huge roll in getting off the line and coming off corners. Horseposwer is great but torque will win more races.
What year S4 did you have? I had a 2000. Nice car, just always in the shop. Drove so many american cars from Hertz I finally said "uncle" and bought one.
S.
fgraziano 08-16-2005, 11:29 AM i had a 2000 as well. No problems whatsoever. I was Stage 2.5, autospeed catless dps and tranny brace, uuc exhaust and short shifter, awe intake, apr ecu. Very sweet car.
I was one of the unlucky few. I think my car was started on a friday, finished on a monday and built entirely by trainees.
I went through MAF sensors like crazy, the heater core exploded, and when the passanger would adjust their seat it would cut out cruise control for good. The final straw was when the hood release latch broke off in my hand.
I would have loved to modify the car but it was never in my hands long enough to do that. I did get to spend a lot of seat time in pretty cool laoner cars though. You know, Buick LeSabres, Pontiac Grand Am GTs.....
I still get :mad thinking about it.
Glad to hear you had a better experience.
Back on topic, how much power does a 325 make?
Mikey52 08-16-2005, 11:55 AM and/or your friend's evo is down on power. Boost leak maybe? Maybe he's sandbagging to get you to throw down some money on another race :D
Ding! Probably an improper BOV install and he's leaking boost. Why does your friend have a BOV as his one and only modification? It's worthless until he starts running more boost and the stock plastic piece begins leaking.

exactly, thank you. Like one guy on here FDNewbie, has a modded FD Rx7. he says it feels slower than most cars due to no torque, but it really is alot faster.
Mikey, you wanna know why? Becuz it is ub3r k3wl!!1!11!11!1!

What's sad is that is the answer most people give. :rolleyes

Yes, I know. I used to have a 97 Z28 (Never let your friends drive your fast car as they will probably beat on it and possibly total it--learned the hard way) That car had great torque and would push you pretty hard in the seat. My last civic ran a 14.0 in the 1/4 but still did not have that much torque. I know where my power bands were, my civic had great power off the line (around 20-70 mph) It would have easily taken my 93 325i but the 325i pulls alot stronger than my civic and it still has plenty of power even after 80 mph
