View Full Version : Car meets: STAY OUT OF FULLERTON

Front-page article in the Fullerton News Tribune is about cops cracking down on car meets in the cities. Looks like a couple idiots ruined it for the rest of us. The Town Center is the ground zero for the crack down, and they are writing citations for everything from modifications to reckless driving.

Also, they are working with the Anaheim Police on the problem. Apparently people meet in Fullerton, and when the cops start to put the heat on, they go to a Sonic in Anaheim to let the situation cool off, before going back into Fullerton.

So keep it calm. I think I'm going to write in an apologize for the shenanigans, even though it sounds like other communities caused the problem. No use giving all car meets a bad name because a couple ricers couldn't keep from doing donuts or getting into fights.

I'm going to send this in:

An apology for the car meet hooligans

I have been apart of the automobile enthusiast community since I was 16 years old. We have meets quiet often, and always stress: safety, respect, and the line “leave the egos at the door”. We look down on show offs, which intern, makes for very safe meets where we rarely have problems.
In reading the article “Police crack down on car clubs” in the August 4th edition, it upset me that not every community shares the same philosophies that we do. Car meets are not there to disturb residents or reek havoc, nor do we all get together with the intent to terrorize the community in high speed runs down city streets. We are there to get together with friends, admire each other’s cars, and sometimes go on “cruises”, again, where safety is stressed.
Although I know for a fact that my community did not take part in any of the activities that resulted in the crack down, I would like to apologize. It is a shame that a few bad apples have to give us all a bad name. I only hope this doesn’t cause resentment towards those of us who admire beautiful cars while being upstanding members of our communities.

Its about damn time they started doing this. If you want to put illegal mods on your car, then accept the risk of being cited. Sure I don't have a front plate, loud exhaust, lowered etc etc and I'll accept whatever punishment I get. But I sure as hell am not going to stand around on private property with a bunch of other similarly modified cars though.

If you live for hanging around private parking lots with other people, be prepared to accept whatever punishment the police decide to hand you.

PS-You might want to spellcheck that letter you typed out before you send it in. "intern"....... :lol

Last I checked it isn't illegal to have a lowered car. I agree that if you put illegal stuff on your car, you should be prepared for consequences, as for your feelings about meets, different views man. A lot of us go there for friends, a lot of us go there for cars, in all, most of us have good times at meets. If you don't like them, don't go, but please get off your soap box because this is the wrong crowd to preach too.

and my spell checker didn't sea intern because intern is still a word

Unfortuneatly, there is a law that indirectly applies to lowered vehicles in california. I forgot the vehicle code off hand, but I can look it up once i get home from work.

It states that the headlights must meet a minimum height range off from the ground, same goes with the taillights, cars must not exceed a certain measurement in height (like being 10 feet off the ground and also not being so low). I forgot the exact measurement, but I know that a lot of cars do not meet this requirement and you can get ticketed for being lowered.

If i remember correctly the center of your headlights must be at least 22" off the ground. They take a tape measure; put it to the center of your headlights and measure down from there.

I'm not familiar with the light measurement, but I AM sure that you can't have the car lowered to the point where it is below the wheel. What this means is that if you get a flat, you have to be able to ride on the wheel and NOT have your frame touching the ground. This is a bit easier for most people to get around these days since larger diameter wheels are norm, and thus they tend to extend beyond the frame even once the car is lowered.

BTW, Huntington Beach hasn't liked us in the past, but had problems finding us doing anything WRONG. We've had many meets at WheelPower where the cops cruised through, but they couldn't do anything since we weren't doing anything wrong. And Irvine has kicked us out twice, although that WAS back in the 'glory days' of the DTM Sunday Brunch meets, where there was even a newspaper article about us and the cops trying to catch us. Ahh...the memories! :stickoutt

Regardless of your intentions for going to a meet, the bottom line is that you are still loitering on someone else's property. If you have illegal mods to your car, then you should expect to be cited if the Popo roll in. It's a buzzkill, but it is the law.

And yes lowering your car is illegal. You also can't expect to be taken seriously when you use incorrect words such as "intern."

I am very much aware of how I spelled my location ;)

Besides, I'm not really concerned with Lauren's spelling. I was just thinking that if she plans on sending it to a public official, it might be taken more seriously without the flagrant typo.

Call me crazy but I have to agree with the police on the crackdown here. I'm not sayin bimmer meets are anything like this, because they aren't, but would you want to see a bunch of riced out cars with annoying exhasuts driving through your town in packs often recklessly. I sure as hell wouldn't and thank god NBPD wouldn't either. To be honest most cops probably would be cool with bimmer enthusiasts as long as they arent driving recklessly or have annoying exhasuts, which I have heard a few on bimmers. Its a shame, but at the same time it is necessary.

That was a very good letter. Just made a few corrections.

I have been a part of the automobile enthusiast community since I was 16 years old. We have meets quiet often, and always stress: safety, respect, and the line “leave the egos at the door”. We look down on show offs, which in turn, makes for very safe meets where we rarely have problems.

MasterM3, stop being a fucking grammar Nazi and just drop it k? Why u giving her such a hard fucking time anyways?

Anyways, if you're gonna have a meet, the best way to have it is meet, then everyone eat at that restaurant ie. sonic's etc. Establish a relationship with said restaurant, and when the police start annoying the guys, tell the restaurant we all patrons here, enjoying your food, etc, and threaten to take business elsewhere. Restaurant will bitch at popo and popo will leave you alone.

Thats how they did it at Happy Days in Campbell, tons of hot rods, modified cars, etc on thursday nights for many years now, many which could probably be ticketed beyond hell, but the police never even dare give them a hard time.

I agree. Even if security gives you crap in a parking lot, you just tell them you're waiting for a few more to show up before getting lunch. And they are cool with that. When you come back to the lot, you have reciepts to prove that you are helping to pay his salary.
