it's a career best Nextel Cup finish for him.
But Tony Stewart is tearing it up right now.

Congratulations to Boris.
Yup, and Scott Pruett came from--I believe--40th to finish 4th.
sleddog 08-14-2005, 09:09 PM nice job Boris and Scott--wish that prick Stewart would cool off--a fantastic natural driver but a fucking loon, no question--would love for Boris to have spanked him today

that had a restart with Boris in second and Stewart stabbed his brakes then gunned it to get a jump on the restart. Well..... it worked as planned and he put distance on him. Then they had another restart and Stewart did the same thing ot Bobby. They both complained about it a little, but in the end they couldn't make up the ground.
That was the first time I was excited about watching the end of a NASCAR race in a looooong time.
sleddog 08-14-2005, 09:44 PM wasn't watching then or I would have thrown a brick through the TV set--the year Stewart won the championship he jumped the final restart at The Glen very flagrantly and Nascar did nothing--he should have been penalized and wouldn't have won the race and possibly not the championship--obviously the guy is a phenomenal talent but I never like to see assholes rewarded for being dicks
This is the longest I have watched a NASCAR race ~15 laps and I noticed something. It seemed that you could just run into the back of someone and put them out of the race with no penalties?? I don't get that, but it was fun to watch the last 10 or so laps, go Boris!

If you watched GrandAm they were very on top of applying penalties for unnecessary contact, but NASCAR seemed to consider all of it part of racing. The contact on Michael Waltrip was terrible.
mcclaskz 08-15-2005, 04:16 PM I was curious, I saw that their lap times were ~ 1:13. Do they run the same entire course that BMWCCA club races on? What are good times for IP on that course?
mijgilbert 08-15-2005, 05:57 PM BMW CCA runs on the full course - they were running the short coure. Good IP times are 2:11 - 2:12.
I can tell you that they are running 30-40 mph faster than me at the end of the back straight, but around the same speed in the bus stop! :)
sleddog 08-15-2005, 06:35 PM true--they do a 2 something mile short course and can hit about 160 on the back straight--were exiting bus stop at 85-87--I can exit about 80-82--speed in the carousel was about 90 for them--we do about 80--they are also lifting/feathering in the essess while I am foot to the floor the whole way from apex of one until the braking zone on the back straight

oh yeah, the IRL is doing 195 on the back straight and the WHOLE LONG COURSE-3.5 miles--in 1:33 IN PRACTICE--
how fucking amazing is that????
stenney 08-15-2005, 08:05 PM I thought it was a pretty good show all in all, but it was Stewart, Gordon, Boris and Pruett at the end who were putting on the show. Jimmy Johnson admitted that he let the road course guys go and was happy where he was. Tony Stewart has a great car, but he also drove very well and didn't make many mistakes. Tony Stewart is who he is, but he does deserve the credit.
BTW, having been to the Glen many times, 1'33.291 was the F1 pole position in 1980 from Bruno Giacomelli in an Alfa Romeo. I couldn't even find this on the Glen (NASCAR based) website. Of course, that was without the bus stop.
sleddog 08-15-2005, 09:14 PM that is an amazing lap time for twenty five years ago--damn, they were fast-you are correct, no bus stop until, I believe ,1992 after Busch driver A.J. McDuffie got killed at the end of the back straight--
Francois Cevert was killed in the essess during practice in the seventies and Jackie Stewart, his teammate, retired on the spot after seeing the crash-
very sad story

In 1978 Mario Andretti was on pole with a 1'38.114 in the Lotus 79. Those were the ground affect days and Mario said that when he set the pole time he went through the shoot loop at the end of the straight flat.
I was watching qualifying from turn 1 the day Francois Cevert died and later saw all the pieces of blue fiberglass where the car hit the guard rail. It was a shame. He had been shaking his fist at someone (I've forgotten who) that had been holding him up in qualifying. The esses must have been pretty exciting in those days. Watching the GrandAm race on Friday night (from home) seeing Tom Milner have his shunt going into the esses brought back some thoughts of Cevert's accident also.
328ischef 08-16-2005, 12:41 AM go boris :buttrock
dugies25 08-16-2005, 10:23 AM Boris did awesome!!! to bad Stewart was dead on.
To answer a few questions...the length of the short course is 2.45 miles to be exact, and sleddog you are correct about when the added the inner loop, but it was J.D. McDuffie and he was a Winston Cup driver, I was there, sad day.
The funny part about when they added the chicane, it actually made the IMSA GTP cars go faster at the end of the back stretch. The track officials were pretty upset about it, but the chicane does it's job for the less sophisticated cars of NASCAR.
sleddog 08-20-2005, 08:45 PM how is it that the IMSA cars are faster with the inner loop??? is it because they are going slower on entry to bus stop so have to brake less and then enter the outer loop faster???
