View Full Version : A weekend in Dover (Media)
chmdrm 08-07-2005, 09:16 PM So back from 2 days of serious fun. Sadly few BMWs there. Louis and Uli were out the first day, but Todd, myself, and Black M5 guy (forgot his name) were the only ones to do both days.
Spent the first day playing with tire pressure and shock settings with the new race tires. By the second day it was perfect, I could not imagine a better handling car. The driver needs work, and the car needs more power, but super happy with the way it turns now.
Car weighed in at 3400lbs with 1/2 tank of fuel so with in the 200hp to the wheels range my power to weight ratio needs help but that will be solved soon enough.
Todd's car sounds louder / different. He was also going into 3rd it seemed later then I was (fast course I was well into 3rd). Wondering if he has gone to solid lifters and is getting more rpm out of it now. I did pass him on the highway on the way home (yes he drove it home) with what looked like ear plugs in. :stickoutt
Anyway, super happy with placing 7th in SM and day 2 6th place Nate (Black GTI) only beat me 1/10th

///Molloy 08-07-2005, 09:28 PM dude, fast line! :buttrock
good video. I'll bet you had a freakin BLAST. (hope you got LOTS of seat time)
nice vid... how much life did that take off the tires out there? I rember I did a 1 day on my street tires and turned them completley bald.
chmdrm 08-07-2005, 09:41 PM Thanks ... I watch it now and I see all sorts of places I think I was late on, or where I could make up time :(
Tire wise I'm on a set of Advan AS032s. R compound with a 60 wear on them but they did not get eaten up to bad. I would think that I will get a whole season out of them but who knows. I ran them once at E center new and they sucked bad. Did 100 miles of 215 laps on them after that to wear the mold release off and by the second run in wendover they were nice and sticky.
From what I've heard not the fastest race tire out there but one of the better wearing ones. I've not used any other R compound tire but these certainly have tons more grip then my PS2s now that they are all broken in.
gtiguy 08-07-2005, 09:56 PM Nice Geoff, with some more power and a bit more experience, next summer may see a new Sherriff in town! Fun course, I wish I could have stayed.
chmdrm 08-07-2005, 10:02 PM I liked the course better on Sun then Sat. Fast both days but people seemed to be cutting 5 to 10 second faster times on Sun. I know I was much faster the second day.
The course was long both days too. Might have been the longest I've run. The last run on Sun was my fastest and I almost passed out after it ... I really need to work learning to breath and drive at the same time.
///Molloy 08-07-2005, 10:05 PM lol @ oxygen starvation.....
yeah I was gonna say... 3 slaloms?.... long azz course!. .... nice.
BREATHE Geoff.
chmdrm 08-07-2005, 10:09 PM I had no idea I was doing it until Jeff Blonder told me at the BMW clinc that I hold my breath when ever I turn.
Just so much to remember for my simple brain. Go fast, don't hit the cones, breath ... something has to give.
DarkGift 08-07-2005, 11:41 PM What Gandalf said.....where were all the Drive Addicts? Do they have you guys on the patch or something? :D

Video of one of my runs (http://www.cs.utah.edu/~tag/autox/movies/URSCCA_Wendover_Divisional_Sat_2005_4th_Run.wmv)
Tires were completely gone with over 100 runs on them and a zillion heat cycles, but were just enough to make it through the weekend.
Oh...I did raise the rev limiter by 200 rpms, but am still on hydraulic lifters. I have put on headers and a 3" race exhaust, which is why it sounded different.
chmdrm 08-08-2005, 12:05 AM I thought there was something different but did not have time to ask.
Great vid, do you have one of the second day you can post too? Love to be able to watch your and my runs back to back.
As for the DA guys ... well ... buying an SCCA membership would envolve planning ahead, racing in Wendover would envolve getting up early, getting there would of course envolve actually driving .... none of which DA in general seems to be good at of late.
2002maniac 08-08-2005, 12:24 AM Cool, looks like fun! I was bummed that I couldnt make it out, but I'm going to go out with IVR next weekend. I hear they have a faster course setup and more seat time. we'll see..

Those are the same track tires I have I have been happy with them but have not ever tried any other track tire.... I would love to come out to these event but AZ to bendover is kinda far :(
But next season I will be all over this.

I do have them, haven't had time to pull them into the computer yet. On another note, to compare them, IMO, you need to have it where you can hear the throttle, tires, etc. With the music I couldn't hear those things. So I can't really offer too much advice. :(
chmdrm 08-08-2005, 10:21 AM No tire or throttle noise on the tape. Both front windows and sunroof were open and about 2 seconds into the run there is nothing but white noise.
My exhaust is on the quiet side anyway and I can't hear it all with helmet / wind when I'm driving, and the only time I heard tires was on the long sweepers at either end but you can't hear them on the tape.
The no exhaust note was actually a bit of an issue as I used to have to glance down at the tach every so often ... now i've learned that when your foot is in it, and you no longer feel it pull ... it's in the rev limiter and time to shift.
Antwerp 08-08-2005, 12:02 PM Fun stuff. Glad those new R's are working out for ya Geoff.
Way decent to have gotten 7th. That's not shabby at all considering you have auto. :stickoutt
Good work! :drink1
DarkGift 08-08-2005, 12:56 PM I'd close the sunroof, both for rollover protection and noise reduction. I always have my side windows down (unless it is raining) and you'll note you can still hear the tires even over the rather loud exhaust ;-)
People can sign up for membership on site if they want, FWIW.
