well i graduated college with a 2.24 overall gpa and a similar in major gpa. Got a 710 on GRE math my first attempt, they told me not to take it again, I'm capable of at least a 750.

I was hoping the engineering skillz i've demonstrated in my job and the general's #1 recommendation would have been good enough to get in, but it doesn't seem that way yet. I'm not too bent out of shape over it all. My reason for doing this was to get into a free engineering program & get good grades to demonstrate to a law or mba program that my undergrad gpa isn't representative of my abilities.

In my limited experience with this (law school admissions), they look first at an index which combines your gpa and test scores in some weighted fashion. If you exceed X you are in, if you are below Y you are rejected (where X>Y) If you are between X and Y, they look at the other stuff on your application.

My guess here is that your index fell below Y and, thus, they didn't evaluate at your extracurricular experience at all. I would suggest a personal contact with the admissions department explaining the extenuating circumstances accounting for your grades and pointing out your job experience and commitment to engineering. They have a great deal of latitude and, if persuaded, will likely let you in the program. I guess the trick is to convince them that you are going to be successful in life (with or without them) and that they should want their program associated with your name.
