View Full Version : Replacing Aux Water Pump 1995 540i 6sp 540i6sp1995 08-02-2005, 10:02 PM i bought the pump already but i would like to do the repair myself. does anybody know where i can find step by step instructions for doing this or can somebody tell me how to? Thanx guys thejlevie 08-03-2005, 12:48 AM That's a very easy repair job. I clamp off the coolant supply hose and the hoses going to the heater core with small needle-nose ViceGrips to avoid having to drain the coolant. Then disconnect the electricals and hoses, and remove the valve body and pump. Replace the pump and reassemble. 540i6sp1995 08-03-2005, 01:37 AM quick question. is it bad to let air into the hoses? thejlevie 08-03-2005, 09:01 AM The small amount of air the you might get into the system (assuming you clamp the hoses) shouldn't cause any problems. But if you don't lamp the hoses you'll get a lot of air in the system and it will require bleeding of the system afterwards. 540i6sp1995 08-04-2005, 12:48 AM well i already got air in it so how to i bleed the system thank you? 540i6sp1995 08-06-2005, 12:22 PM bumpers :lol thejlevie 08-06-2005, 01:16 PM well i already got air in it so how to i bleed the system thank you? In the usual manner. My procedure looks like: 1) Get the front of the car up in the air (I go for about 2 feet). 2) With the engine cold open the bleed screw and add coolant until no more air comes out. 3) Set the heater controls for full hot and the blower on max. Then start the car and allow it to come up to temp while monitoring coolant level and the bleed screw for air being expelled. Top up coolant as necessary. 4) Close the bleed screw and put the cap on. Then blip the throttle to bring the engine to 2000-2500 rpm and hold it there a few seconds several times. That should push any air out of the heater core and you should feel hot air from the vents. 5) Crack the bleed screw and allow any air to escape. After this put the front of the car back on the ground. 6) Allow the engine to cool down completely and adjust the coolant level (the level check must be done cold). Then button everything up and go for a ride that involves at least 10 minutes of highway driving on a hot engine and with the heater on full. 7) After the drive jack up the front and see if any air is released from the bleed screw. I like to repeat (6) & (7) after a few days of driving to get any residual air out. |
