I have a 1992 525im. It's prewired for a factory alarm, but I hear the old factory systems are really sketchy. What low-cost keyless entry systems do you know of? I will probably do install myself.

check out the Stellar one from Bav Auto. I installed it almost a year ago and it works great! The only thing is my car has a double - locking thing so thats very annoying.. Other than that, its really good

Yea, why's the double locking annoying? All bmw's have double locking.

Good low-cost option: remove doors.

Its annoying because I have to do everything twice!! my friends 540 doesnt have it and another 525 ive been in doesnt have it either..

I mean I am pretty used to it by now, but its just longer to do everything.. Now with the keyless its a little better, but when I didnt have it and if it was raining out badly, its just more time to get soaked, and it sucked because most of the time I was carrying stuff that couldnt get wet.

What ? I didn't understand anything you said.

All BMWs have double-lock feature. One turn of the key unlocks it from the double lock just like it would from a normal lock. Keyless should work the same... so your stuff is not working properly.

check it out. when i lock the car, it locks, then unlocks, and when i do it the 2nd time, it finally locks. And the same goes for unlocking. So see, I have to do everything twice.

that does not sound normal.

double locking is when the car deadbolts itself close. turn the key 45 degrees locks the door. turn the key 90 degrees deadbolts it and makes it nearly impossible to open the doors.

I think you have a problem somewhere with your actuator.

*ehem* so... back on topic. Any inexpensive aftermarket keyless entry systems I should be considering?

Again...me too. Could you define "sketchy", or rather elaborate on it (thinking of post a few days ago about the proper use of a dictionary).

I believe your keyless entry might be mis-wired, my friends 1994 325i does the exact same thing.

well, BMW uses alpine systems in the E36 which isn't that bad.

like i said, look on ebay for DEI. they do, literally, make 95% of the alarms out there from viper to clifford to.... just get one of their DEI models and nothing with a name on it. if you DO concider expanding the roll of your alarm, make sure you get one that could take it. always sucks to get a brain that just unlocks and later on when something happens and you want to add the actual alarm ( or motion sensor, auto-window down, etc) and you can't because you went with a bottom of the barrel remote door switch.

i had one in my Z. just unlocks and locks. can't do anything else. it was aftermarket and the guy who owned it before me installed it. when some punks tried to break into my car, that put an end to that. got a Viper with all the doo-das. you don't need it but just wanted to let you know they do make a very simple system out there.

Would you then recommend somethinig specific? By that I mean a specific DEI model?

Thanks

EDIT: i'm no pro so just a FYI, post this at the car audio and electronic's section. you might get better feed back and response as to where and which model to get.
