I made a thread before, about strange cracking/grinding noise when hard shifting from 1st to 2nd. Now I hear this noise when I go over like 4.5k RPM in 1st. I also hear a thump sometimes when switching to 1st from neutral. Do these two problems have something in common? What can I check? The sound definately comes from the rear end of the car.

PS, it's a '93 525i

well first of all - I'd stop doing hard shifts from 1st to 2nd for the time being.

do you feel the gears grinding? worst case scenario would be that a synchro is going out. You might want to change out your tranny fluid just as a preventative maintenance and see if that helps.

in terms of the thump that occurs when you change from 1st to neutral - does it occur when you shift gears or when you push the clutch in and out - perhaps a bad flex disc....

I stopped doing hard shifts the first time I heard the noise, but it also occurs when I go into high rpms in any gear. The gears don't grind at all and the shifts feel pretty smooth. Like I mentioned before, the noise comes from the rear end. Almost sounds as if it comes from the rear right wheel.

The thump occurs when I shift into 1st from rest (neutral, the car is stationary). It happens when I engage the clutch (release the pedal)

i would probably check your gears if you broke a couple splines off the spider gear then it would gring and have play which is why it clunks when you put it in gear

like i said, it doesn't grind, but just thumps, and it doesn't happen every time, just occasionally. For now, I'm more concerned with the other issue

potentially center support bearing, or flex disc

^^^I assume that one of those may be causing a "thump," but what about the cracking noises in the rear

not sure what you mean by a cracking sound.

mine had a bad howling sound (kind of like when you run snow tires) which turned out to be a bad rear wheel bearing.

perhaps loose exhaust/heat shield?

Well, it's not really cracking, but it just makes a sudden weird sound, and only occurs at high RPMs
