Actually, static probems are a very big concern on all cars, but most do not explode. There are cases of women who sit in there car and comb their hair while filling up, then when they go to remove the hose from the car there is a little spark from the static produced from the combing action. Needless to say it is not pretty.

That article is obviously pretty old... in the article it says that "the MINI went on sale in the UK just a few weeks ago" and its now been on sale there for damn near a year... the problem has almost surely been fixed for all the new ones being sold, and probably wasn't even an issue by the time the MINI's got to this side of the pond.
