View Full Version : HOLY SHIITE! Cheating scandal/disqual in Grand Am?

I watched Jonsson's last-lap pass of the 350Z...a thing of beauty.
A real shame if this was on purpose...
Well, at some point some knew about the "wrong" engine.
Too bad they don't show the race live, or tape delayed at least. All those stupid NASCAR-related shows, or custom-vehicles (bikes or cars) make me sick.
I thought the 350's were not competitive, that's what I read anyways.
maranelloman 07-31-2005, 07:14 PM Speed TV does show these races tape-delayed. This race will be on next Saturday afternoon.
JuliusPleaser 07-31-2005, 09:40 PM What did you expect? The series is owned by the NASCAR family. ;)

dhabes 08-01-2005, 09:24 AM Yo Dave, sorry I never got the chance to come over and say hi. We were pretty busy all weekend...scratch that....extremely busy all weekend. How Bill and Justin finished 3rd (really 2nd now) with that car is a miracle after it got t-boned hard Sat morning. I almost came over and said hi shortly after you got out but then they came on the radio and said we were in our pit window so that wasnt gonna happen.
Anyways, pretty sad that they had a completely illegal engine...like not just components but an entire illegal engine.
Bane2871 08-01-2005, 09:26 AM Anyways, pretty sad that they had a completely illegal engine...like not just components but an entire illegal engine.
:rofl "Oops! Now how did that get in there?"
The HACK 08-01-2005, 10:26 AM I thought the 350's were not competitive, that's what I read anyways.
Not for lack of trying. The 350z's were competitive, except the team running it is not up to the competition. The few races I saw live here in So. Cal, the 350zs always qualify near the front but lack pace through the entire race, either due to mechanical difficulties or through lack of management.
I wish Nissan would step in and make that a factory team.
Dark Helmet 08-01-2005, 10:49 AM someone want to fill me in... the GA site is blocked from here...
dhabes 08-01-2005, 04:23 PM The winning Grand Am Cup GS Porsche (Konrad/TRG driven by Konrad and Jonsson) was DQ'ed for an illegal engine. Therefore the second place 350z is technically the winner and Turner Motorsport M3 was 2nd.

Krohn, not Konrad.
dhabes 08-01-2005, 06:35 PM oops...not sure why i made that mistake. Anyway, yea it was the Krohn/TRG porsche.
Dave how did you guys end up. About 3/4 through the race I went back to the trailer to start packing up so I didnt get to see the end. They were pretty strict on contact and other penalties, saw quite a few cars come through.
maranelloman 08-02-2005, 11:40 AM Response from the team:
To our fans,
This past weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, our 2003 Porsche GS Race car was disqualified in post-race impound for running an illegal X-51 Engine, which is a higher horsepowered version of the standard 3.6 liter engine which comes standard in the 2003 Porsche 911. Both of these engines are available as off the shelf purchases from Porsche. When Krohn Racing/TRG took control of the car from two previous race teams, a new motor had been ordered by one of the previous teams, and was delivered to us in a crate as part of the spares that accompanied the car. The engine was recently installed to replace the tired motor from 2 years of hard running. Unfortunately, the crew members from our team that also work for the DP program, did not realize that this engine was not a stock engine and not legal to be running in the GS class of Grand-Am. The car had passed tech leading up to this event as well, and unfortunately - no one realized the error. Ironically, after doing the engine swap, the X-51 engine was never matched to the old ECU, to take advantage of the possible increased horsepower that the engine is capable of making. Once we learned of the rule, we did not appeal, nor argue, and immediately purchased the correct, legal engine which we will have for the remainder of the season. We realize that we have a lot of loyal fans and we try to run our program in the utmost professional manner. We apologize to our fans and competitiors for this oversite, and can not stress enough that it was an honset mistake which will not happen again. Thanks, Mike Johnson, Team Manager Krohn Racing/TRG

David, we were doing really well (despite my horrible qualifying, thanks to a broken shifter that prevented me from utilizing 3rd gear) until about 50 minutes into the race, when, on a restart, I was whacked 4 times by the #4 and #55 Mustangs, and sent spinning with wheel & body damage, and a failed ABS system. We lost 6 laps in the pits making repairs (we never did get our ABS to come back on). Despite all this, we finished 18th in class. Very disappointing, since we had a really good car that was getting better & better each lap. In fact, when the accident happened, I was right behind a group of cars running 5-6-7-8-9 in class, and closing on them by 2-3 car lengths a lap.
Oh, well!
mmills416 08-02-2005, 11:51 AM Now thats the real world :lol :lol
maranelloman 08-02-2005, 11:56 AM Now thats the real world :lol :lol
It is. However, I saw both of these guys coming, and gave them both plenty of room (since they are in a different class). But the #4 car fukked up & hit an apex curb, and then bounced into me, sending me into the #55 car, who got 2 wheels off and then jerked the car back on, pounding me back into the #4. And I ping ponged back & forth for probably 100' before getting rammed from behind by an M3, who sent me spinning into the grass.
These guys were driving like 15 year olds. Absolutely no reason for that sort of conduct when I gave them PLENTY of room.
However, the #4 car broke a ball joint when he hit me...and lost 10 laps in the pits fixing it. We actually finished ahead of him (I had words with the driver afterwards)...and the #55 car was penalized 1 minute for "avoidable contact" with another car. So they both paid for their abject stupidity.
:shifty :mad :mad :mad
mmills416 08-02-2005, 12:06 PM you do know that Mike Johnson was on the MTV show the real world london, about 8 years ago

mmills416 08-02-2005, 01:16 PM YES, unfortunately my wife is a huge Real World fan
JuliusPleaser 08-02-2005, 06:30 PM he was an aspiring racer during the show, in England right?
Yes. His father owned Speedgear or some other mail-order automotive deal.
He tried his hand at Forumula Renault (I think) while in England, and got his ass handed to him. :D
What I heard was the motor is a GT3R motor and the suspension was a complete Cup car suspension with the Cup car markings removed and repainted to look stock.

Unsubstantiated rumors help no-one...
There's really no reason to post what one of your buddies told you...did he say he heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend?
Spetsnaz Op 08-02-2005, 09:33 PM Uh, no, I had no clue. Same guy? LOL now at my post---I had no clue!!
nice to see a racer on the forums :)

There is more than one. Tom M is also a racer---supremely talented, much more so than I.
Tom, I came by your trailer several times over the weekend to say Hi. Every time you had stepped away. I even had Joey help me out...bummer.
Thanks for keeping me in check Ben, but I was there that weekend and heard from a few people that story. Is it true? We won't ever get the real truth anyways. The prep on the car changed hands recently I believe as well to add another twist.
Sorry I missed you Dave. Driving in two classes in the same weekend keeps me busy, which I can't complain about. I'm doing the rest of the season so I'm sure we'll cross paths at least once.
Tom

Not to worry...I didn't know you were actually *there*. In any event, I hate seeing people spread potentially damaging rumors online which are completely unsubstantiated...sounds like you at least have some grounds for the claim though.
Carry on!
:D
dhabes 08-04-2005, 10:50 AM Tom I had heard a similar rumor...as to whether it is true or not I'm not sure.
Disclaimer: I also was at the event all weekend :)

ettsn 08-05-2005, 03:54 PM Both Mike Johnson and Nic Jonsson are extremely stand-up guys. If they say it was an honest mistake, it most likely was.

mijgilbert 08-07-2005, 12:09 AM What pisses me off about the tape-delayed speed channel broadcast is that they had a week to give some sort of update at the end that says the "winning" car was disqualified. Instead, they congratulate them and interview them and don't say "oh by the way they were DQed for a cheater engine". Dont' you think they should?
dhabes 08-07-2005, 01:13 PM i agree. Even if it is a voice over typed deal. Why praise a cheater...whether intentional or not.

Horse manure.

Is that when you came in during the race?? I was wondering what happened for that one.
maranelloman 08-09-2005, 07:56 PM Is that when you came in during the race?? I was wondering what happened for that one.
Yeah, on a restart, I was right behind places 5-6-7-8-9 in my class, and a number of GS cars were right behind me, obviously much faster. As we went up the hill out of T3, there was a Mustang on either side of me (Tom Nastasi on my right in #5 and James Gue on my left in #55). I gave them plenty of room (confirmed by Nastasi after the race when I tore him a new one), and yet Nastasi whacked me HARD (enough to demilish my passenger door), bouncing me into Gue, who went off track & came back on...right into me, knocking me back into Nastasi...who knocked me into Gue...who sent me into the grass, where i hit a mud puddle from all that rain, and, hydroplaning, spun right back on track, coming ot a stop across the track with all the traffic coming up the hill at WOT on my right. Everyone split around me, thankfully, and I never got T-boned.
I had MAJOR tire rub from both (obviously bent-in) front fenders, and obviously bent wheel, and who knows what else. I drove one lap, trying to ascertain raceworthyness, but the fender rub was absolutely killing my speed in the corners. So I came in. We lost like 5 laps pounding out the fender (and replacing tires), and I went back out. When it went yellow again, I discovered that I also had no ABS as I slid into a sand trap in T5 on live TV.
The good news was that Nastasi lost 10 laps due to breaking a ball joint when he whacked me...and we actually finished ahead of him!!
dhabes 08-09-2005, 08:12 PM that sucks Dave! Thats one thing that is interesting about the series is the difference in speeds. I know Bill got caught up with the Speedsource #72 in his incident, although I believe it was more like the #72 going off due to other contact and collecting Bill.
At least now you know how the ALMS guys feel :)

Yeah, I came arounf seconds after Bill got tapped. Both cars were still sliding after the contact. UGH.
Hey...we should have put a big Anchor logo on that jack we lent you guys after yours failed during the race!

Yea that sucked. It arguably cost us the race. Marc (crew chief) said he was pumping it up and then all the sudden the car just fell and the jack blew all its fluid. So we used our other one under the rear suspension and then yours at the jack point. At least cost us 30 seconds under yellow and we barely beat the pace car out. Lost the race by 5 - 10 seconds. Still an amazing finish regardless considering the damage.

Note that the repair would not have been possible without the Multimatic Torch they let us borrow (mind you we are battling them for the top spot in GS)
Everywhere that I have posted about the weekend I mentioned that it was due to help from the Anchor Racing jack. Check Bimmerfest. :alright
E30VOLUTION 08-10-2005, 03:05 AM why are they putting a porsche engine in a Nissan? im confused, does anybody know how much extra HP that cheat motor had vs normal one?

Wow. I've raced with Nastasi a lot in the past, both in Star Mazda's and in SCCA races where he was driving his much faster Atlantic car. Sounds a bit out of character, as he tends to be a pretty good guy.
Just watched the Tivo'ed race. Sorry about the bad luck!

Yup. Despite the retarded driving exhibited by many in the GS class, the rival teams helping one another is really nice to see!!!

Thanks.
While I don't know Tom well, he did acknowledge afterwards when I confronted him that he saw I was trying to give him room and didn't react properly. He charged for the T4 apex curb, thinking he could beat me to it, instead of waiting & allowing me to finish giving him room. Result? He bounced off the curb & into me. He did apologize after I tracked him down & confronted him in a non-threatening way. Would have been nice had he come found me, since he was the culprit...
