I just fixed my AC which wasn't working because of a bad compressor and some burnt relay, and now I get this warning in the dash, and I don't know what it means?

Anybody here had the same problem? What does this warning mean?

Thanks for your help.

Mihai

So the warning says "Check Control"? Hm. Have you pressed the black knob on the right side of the steering wheel in the cluster? (other side compared to the trip reset knob) That should give you a more specific thing to look at.

If you have an owners manual...turn to the section about the Check Control System. That warning falls in the Priority 3 catagory and your manual explains it and gives you a direction to look in. 8-)

Example from the online e34 owners' manual:

turn the key on while holding the same knob for about 5 seconds then release. Dont touch, it will go through a diag sequence and then display whatever codes you have when its dont

It could also be your craptastic "Check Control Module"

If it makes any difference to you mine did that right before a wiring harness fire :(

And as for the wiring harness fire  :help ....that scares me!
Did you also have AC problems before the fire? or was it something else?
What symptoms did you have?

Thanks

Mine has done that since I bought it 3 years ago. The local BMW dealer doesn't know whats wrong either. It always goes away after I put it into gear and move the car. :dunno

Yeah so did mine

After I replaced the engine harness it went away :shifty:

I dunno guys, BMW's "Barely adequate" wire sizing policy sucks

after I I start it the warning goes away.
What should I do?
I guess I have to wait until it catches on fire... :(

Is there a diagnostic system that can locate the problem?

Thanks for all your help.

As a matter of fact, yes there is.

Pull the wirewrapping from around the diag connector and the connector right next to it. Look for signs of overheating, wires melted together, etc

Remove the left hand kick panel and examine the yellow connector going to the back, do the same thing. Pull the drivers seat and examine its harness. GO back to the rear power distribution obox under the drivers and repeat

i wanted to bump this because this is now my car and I still have the same exact error two years later. I never through much about it until I read the word fire then I started to worry a little bit. Is this a serious symptom of a larger problem? The "check control" disappears after I put the car in gear and drive away and I never hear from it again until the next time I turn the car on

I have heard that bad fusible links in the rear power distribution box can cause this

I've gone through 3 fusible links (to fix PPPP OBC after battery failure) so I dont think that is the problem

Mine does this too. I'll just wait till it catches fire so it'll go away.

I think you should disconnect the battery cable for a few mins.so the system can reset if you don't have a scanner. Some guys do this to erase the computer memmory, like an old girl friend ya gotto go the extra to make her forget. if this fails to work then check all the bulbs, fuses like one said, check relays etc. This might just be another bug in the making.

As posted above, my car still does it. It hasn't caught fire yet, but I do get a burning smell anytime I put the fam switch in speed 3. I just use the others :dunno

Will it cycle through the OBC functions?

When you start the car, and this is diplayed, have you tried pressing the cycle button, the round button to the right of the display.

And when you said you did the diag procedure (holding the cycle button for three seconds then turning the ignition on) did you mean it doesn't do ANYTHING, or doesn't display an error messages after it cycles through the procedure?

I can cylce the OBS stuff after Im in gear and moving. If I hit the button it just acts like its going to say something else and then says check control again. Baisicly scrolls to the same letters.

If it makes any difference to you mine did that right before a wiring harness fire :(

Well my OBC has been doing the Check Control for some time now. Today when I went to start the car I smelled what I'm sure is smoke from some sort of electrical burning. I thought it might be something outside that was blowing into my vents but it wasn't and the smell kept getting stronger.

I immediately turned off the car and drove the M to work. Hopefully it caught fire. :( :help

Check the wiring directly beneath your diagnostic connecter..it went first on mine...check the harness beneath the dash...also check by your battery where the fusible links go..

also check under your driver front seat for pinched/shorted wires

I'll look at all those soon as I get some daylight.
