Hey, looking at the X5 as a daily driver.

Is the 3.0L powerful enough for around town?

Specs say the towing capacity is 6000lbs. Any one ever tow with the 3.0?

Just driving around on the quick test drive seemed good. I've got the M3 for when I need the power :evil2

I'd suggest driving a 4.4 so you can make a comparison. I did that and chose a 4.4, but I'm very V8-biased. I just think the V8 not only has much more power, but also sounds a lot better and quieter. My $.02...

The v8 is nice too have, but you don't need it.

The 3.0 coupled with AWD makes the x5 a very strong car off the line, and it's no sliuch up top either. But don't expect bone crushing acceleration at highway speeds.

That said, I perfer the noise of the 3.0 to the 4.4(both Pre valvtronic and post). The pre valvtronic in our 740 makes a bit of a boring noise as it revs, and the post valvetronic in the 2004 X5 we tested seemed detached, the engine revved loudly up front, but there was also a loud wooshing sound coming from the back glass(presumably the exhaust). THe 3.0 on the other hand growls all the way up to redline, and sounds extremeley sporty.

3.0L is enough for around town, but I think you'll need the 4.4L to tow the 6000lbs comfortably.

X3.0 is great for around town. Not sure about towwing 6000lbs though.

There is alway the option of supercharging if you want more out of it. ESS and RMS makes supercharger kits for 3.0

I drove both the 3.0 & 4.4... as with ther 5 series, its a cruiser & nothing spectacular.. kinda slow on the pickup... the 4.4 is way more better.

I can't believe that nobody has said it yet...

4.8is or ban!

j/k...remember that the 3.0i (M54 = 225hp) and the 4.4i (M62 = 286hp)originally were a 61 hp difference. If you are really worried about it wait until September when the X5 will get the new 3.0L (N64? = 255hp) from the E90; the extra 30hp (which puts it only 30 or so shy from the original 4.4i) will make a difference.

I have a 3.0 that looks like a 4.6. Anyway it tows very well. I tow a 5000 pound boat with it.

That is a great point.

That is a great point.

I thought it was pretty sure that the current X5 would never recieve the new 3.0? It would just go into the next gen?

I was told that this fall the X5 was getting the 3.0L (N64?) from the E90 and that the V8 was going to be the 4.8L from the 750i and they were going to discontinue the 4.8is until the redesign. But then again who knows...its all speculation.
