View Full Version : M-Style mirrors for E38
Alpina B12 07-16-2005, 09:57 AM Hi everyone,
as I am selling those over here in Germany I thought you might be interested
as well. The mirrors are totally Plug'n'Play as you just need to remove the
OEM ones, disconnect the plug, reconnect it to the new mirror, install the
mirror itself and you are done. Takes about 20mins.
The mirrors have the following options included:
- electronic folding
- electronic adjustment
- heating
- memory
- co-driver side lowers when in reverse to show the ground
I would appreciate if someone could state the correct english terms for
this functions as those above sound horrible :confused
M-Mirror: 299 EUR (~360 USD)
Shipping (ground): 32 EUR (~39 USD)
Shipping (air): 48 EUR (~58 USD)
Here are some product pics and some pics of the mirrors installed.

I have 2 sets in stock at the moment.
If anyone is interested feel free to contact me by E-Mail at dominik@alpinab12.de.
Thanks

Mine don't fold electronically.

BasSPoweR 07-16-2005, 03:18 PM do u have any tail lights for sale?
Alpina B12 07-16-2005, 03:53 PM The options listed above do only work if your car already has them of course.
I have crystalclear taillights for sale at 155 EUR (~189 USD) but you should
buy those in the US as shipping will kill the price for sure.

So i guess the folding option wouldn't work on my E38 then. :( Too bad. Could i get it to work? I own a 1997 IL and have all those otpions except the folding option.
John
BasSPoweR 07-16-2005, 03:57 PM are they made by hella or bosch?
ny-sevens 07-17-2005, 12:31 PM The mirrors come with, what is shown in the pics? - the base, housing, glass and correct wiring for the E38? Is that correct?
immaculate 07-17-2005, 05:14 PM is the price you listed for a single mirror or for a pair?
aaron
Alpina B12 07-17-2005, 06:32 PM @BasSPoweR
No - they are imported from asia but the quality is very good. Only satisfied
customers till now. FYI the OEM ones are neither produced by Bosch or Hella,
they are made by ULO for BMW.
@ny-sevens
Yes, the mirrors come with everything what is needed for them to fit and
work properly. You just need to have them painted and the installation is
just plug'n'play. If required replacement mirrors glasses are available as well.
@immaculate
They price is for a pair of course.

it was an option to have electronically folding mirrors? i never heard of that, but it would be hot tho
eddieb022000 07-18-2005, 03:06 PM they said it cost like 2g's to get his mirrors to fold... think i saw it on E38.org, but i'm not sure...
i would like the folding option too, benz has them, not sure why bmw didnt put them in... i have a 2000.
Alpina B12 07-18-2005, 03:10 PM It was a normal option.
Both my 97' 740i and my 96' B12 had it.
On 7er.com they developed an additional relay which makes the mirrors fold
automatically when you lock the car and unfold them in normal position when
you unlock it again. Nice gimmick.

Show me one good reason why you'd actually need them in the USA.
Some Euro cars have them because of absurdly tight "catch as you can" parking situations. In the USA, you have your choice of parallel, between the lines, or hand the keys to the valet. None of which requires "yet-another-damn-thing-to-break" power folding mirrors.

Edit: if you want them because they're cool, fine... it's your car. But as to "Why BMW didn't put them in", I'd like to think that the extra development time and expense of such a device would be put into powetrain or reliability.

Bimmerhead 07-18-2005, 06:33 PM Dominik,
I'll take a set. I'll send an email direct so we can work out the paint and method of payment.
Thank you.
See you in a few weeks.

Because you don't want to lean your ass out the window at the drive-thru? I always fold my mirrors in so I can get right next to the window and not have to try very hard to grab my gut-buster.
I also fold them in whenever I have to park next to anybody - since I always try to park three miles away from anybody, whenever someone is within 5 feet it feels too damn close.

Yes, I'd definitely want another car's door to hit my dentable door rather than my plastic mirror housing. :lol

Suit yourself, I merely prefer not to have someone's fat ass knocking my mirror off. ;)
The Shadowchaser 07-18-2005, 11:28 PM I honestly do not see why the whole idea of folding the mirror up to accomodate tight parking was created. If you are parking that close to anyone how do you get in the car? I like it because it looks trick. I will be installing mine soon as well.

Do you have the electronics for it or will it be a "home-grown" solution with a switch?

Factory parts using a new door switch and passenger door module. It should be plug and play.

Hey Dom,
Any chance you can post that info here? I think that would be a very cool trick for the shows here. :redspot

I know the E46 guys and E39 guys that dont have power folding only need the new door switch and the passenger door module to make the power folding feature work. I expect the same for the E38.
Alpina B12 07-19-2005, 04:03 AM Well - tight parking next to each other is not the main reason I think but in
Europe we have lots of narrow streets so if you park your car at the side
of the street the folding option can save you from picking up your mirror in
pieces from the street as someone missmeasured the space left or the car
passing by was just too large.
In addition German parking garages in the city are a pain in the ass if you
drive a car at the size of a 7 series. I had to fold my mirrors several times
and even set forwards and backwards to get the turn to the next level ...
they are so damned tight and the walls are so near I always bless god when
I leave one without a scratch ... that is why I stay away from them if I can.
Regarding the power folding relay when you lock the car I could try to have
some of them built and ship them to you if you are interested. I do not know
exactly how much they were but if I recall correctly ~25 USD.
Dominik
Alpina B12 07-19-2005, 05:40 AM I did some research and contacted the developer of the little relay. He has
none in stock and no time to build new ones at the moment but on request
he would do so in autumn.
As Justin already mentioned there are only the following parts needed to add
the power folding option to your car:
- 2 mirrors with power folding
- driver side switch unit
- passenger side door module
The mirrors are the most expensive parts so if you choose to do this it would
be cheaper to use the M-Mirrors provided by me ;) The package would sum
up to ~675 USD for parts then.

I use mine all the time. On the street naturally as some have already mentioned to keep truck mirrors from hitting them. But mostly in parking lots. Some of the places I go in Seattle don't have large lots which allow me to park far away from other vehicles. So it's nice to fold the mirrors in to prevent people banging into them when walking between cars. I've seen it many times, and done it myself a time or so. I also fold mine in when parking in the garage to make more room to walk by. Can't always trust my friends and roomates to be careful. Not everybody has the luxury of extra space around their vehicles.

I will keep you posted.

audibmw 10-24-2005, 03:39 AM I find folding mirrors extremely useful in parking lots where people walk through spaces, alot of the time i myself knock peoples mirrors when walking around cars parked and i do not consider myself large
