View Full Version : dodge ram turbo diesel vs m3sedan
BOOSTED4DRM3 07-12-2005, 12:34 AM I was on my way home tonight on the highway and see some blue hid lights
coming real fast. I see Its a regular dodge ram turbo not a dually. I put my
car into 3rd and wait for him to punch it then were off and he starts pulling immediately . He takes me by like 3 cars. We do it again on 2nd and same thing .We then exit the highway and race off the hole he launches on me and beats me again . I talked to the guy and he says its an Inline 6 turbo diesel.??And he's boosting 60 psi. I dont know if thats true but he was fast. I looked that car up and it has a 5.9 L, inline- 6 ,w/ 610 ft/Lbs tq from factory. didn know those trucks were that fast. Anyone run into any of them? All I have done is an obd 1 manifold l/w flywheel and hks exhaust.
PointMEby 07-12-2005, 12:41 AM WHOA!!!!!   ..... wait can you drive? I wasnt aware you could run 60psi on those things???? that would be like over 800 hp???
BOOSTED4DRM3 07-12-2005, 12:49 AM Yes I can Drive iv'e had my car for 4 years now I can drive it pretty good. The guy probably put a huge turbo on it.It cant be stock to move how it did.
kcp1989 07-12-2005, 12:49 AM go to 1320video.com to see a sweet chevy truck with like 800 rwhp. :eyecrazy
M tastic 07-12-2005, 12:53 AM I have a dura max with 450 hp and 790 ft and it moves
RRdawho? 07-12-2005, 12:55 AM Diesel cars usually boost alot more than gas cars.
Volfinator 07-12-2005, 01:08 AM Diesel's can be made hella fast. You sure it wasn't a Dr. Preformance? I know someone here in town that has a 11 second truck. And its lifted like 6 inches.
IchLiebeBMW 07-12-2005, 01:17 AM I have a duramax diesel. These new diesels are good power when they are stock. But they are really easy to add tons more power with nothing more than chip and exhaust. You can beat pretty much any vehicle off the line when your runnin 700+ torque.... It doesnt matter if your on a hill or flat ground, it will get up and go. I am a member on a few diesel sites and you wouldt believe what these trucks kill. A good way to tell if the guy u raced had mods is if he had allot of black smoke coming out the tailpipe. If there wasnt really any, then it was stock. But when you mod these things and stack a chip with a programmer, they will fog up the whole freeway....
IchLiebeBMW 07-12-2005, 01:18 AM OHH and 60 psi of boost? that is BS in my opinion.....
BOOSTED4DRM3 07-12-2005, 01:26 AM humongous cloud of black smoke :mad I knew he wasnt stock . Yea 60psi sounds a little too much.
M Roady 07-12-2005, 01:56 AM Ouch! Better stick to riced out Civics. ;)
60psi is high but not drastic I run 28psi on mine. My bud with his f350 power stroke is running 37. It diesel not a spark fired motor... it ignites its fuel from pressure not spark so you can run alot more pressure.... Mine has a biger turbo and uped fuel pressure, stock I am at 400 ft lbs of TQ. My freinds just dynoed his at 800 TQ. And his truck is pretty quick just ran a 13.8 1/4m at RMR in utah.
inlinesixm3 07-12-2005, 02:39 AM my companies f250 boost' 40. major turbo lag though with a 100mph limiter and a gps unit to record our driving speed and location hahaha
giterdone 07-12-2005, 08:52 AM yeah, I never would've guessed but those trucks are fast as hell. When I first got my truck, a friend had a lifted F-350(I think was his number, maybe 250) Diesel truck. A relatively newer one. he was saying we shoudl race, and that he should spank me. I was like pffft, dude ther eis no way you'd beat me. We never did race, but I found out, that him and anothe friend with a vette (not sure if it was c5 or z06) but they said they were about even. My friend with the truck didn't have a TON of money from his work, so i'm sure he wasn't real heavily modded.
Trepan 07-12-2005, 09:59 AM A thousand pounds of torque will own you every time :D
giterdone 07-12-2005, 10:12 AM A thousand pounds of torque will own you every time :D
pffft, torque doesn't do anything. it is all about the horsPOWAH!!!! :stickoutt
BOOSTED4DRM3 07-12-2005, 11:40 PM that truck I raced had 610 tq and like 300+ hp so I guess the tq will always beat you.
chewietobbacca 07-12-2005, 11:47 PM There's defenitely some pretty amazing trucks out there
IVAD32 07-12-2005, 11:59 PM I had a run in with a HEMI truck that I was not too proud off. We were stopped side-by-side at a light where the lanes merged into one after the intersection. As the light turned green, I started out semi quick to take the advantage, but that HEMI badge was still in my passenger's window. So I WOT and short shifted at 5800 RPM (didn't want to try too hard) into second and the bastard was still there . I cut it at 45 mph (don't need a ticket) and moved over into a new lane. That damm truck was quick and I wasn't prepared to go full out.
Off the line they are quick, but on the highway their weight and poor wind efficiency should favor a smaller/lighter car.
hnoppenberger 07-13-2005, 12:00 AM cummings are the most powerful diesels.
i6 power mofo.. at least u got something in common with him
and yes, they can boost 60.... its a diesel, whole different ball game.
ive seen diesel trucks that run 10s... stock turbo
My brother '05 350 dually boosts to 30psi stock :o
giterdone 07-13-2005, 07:49 AM Off the line they are quick, but on the highway their weight and poor wind efficiency should favor a smaller/lighter car.
What do you mean poor wind efficiency? They hav ethe aero dynamics of a brick wall. THey are excellent highway runners.
IchLiebeBMW 07-13-2005, 05:22 PM 60psi is still too much for being "stock". Now if he had an aftermarket turbo 60psi could be possible. But even then thats very high.
No one said it was stock at 60 psi
diegom6 07-13-2005, 06:39 PM These diesel engines can take easilly 60 PSI, so don't all it BS my friend.
diegom6 07-13-2005, 06:41 PM pffft, torque doesn't do anything. it is all about the horsPOWAH!!!! :stickoutt
wow! hope you are just joking!
giterdone 07-13-2005, 06:42 PM wow! hope you are just joking!
you gotta hang around kills more often. Yeah its a joke. Also I always just like to contradict Trepan. It is fun. :D
also: emoticons, normally mean something is lighthearted, or sarcastic.
diegom6 07-13-2005, 06:54 PM you gotta hang around kills more often. Yeah its a joke. Also I always just like to contradict Trepan. It is fun. :D

hehe, then I guessed well but I was unsure...yes, emoticons help, but for me that emoticon you inserted gave me a doubt about what you said :stickoutt
I would used " :rolleyes "
:D
Usually 60 psi is to much for a stock HG. But a new HG and Stud the head you are usually good.
giterdone 07-13-2005, 08:28 PM hehe, then I guessed well but I was unsure...yes, emoticons help, but for me that emoticon you inserted gave me a doubt about what you said :stickoutt

:D
I normally use :rolleyes , when soembody says something completely wrong, and then I come back agreeing with them. When I contradict soemthing they said that is true, I use the :stickoutt
But heck, now we're on the same page, so we're
2002maniac 07-14-2005, 12:28 AM that truck I raced had 610 tq and like 300+ hp so I guess the tq will always beat you.
That is stock! If he is really boosting 60, he has WAY more than that
darkness95m3 07-16-2005, 06:54 AM Love those diesel trucks. The other way of getting lot's of horsepower from diesel engines is by adding propane injection. I have suprised lots of cars with my van. The only downside is, you need lots of road to slow down the vehicle.
vashts1985 07-16-2005, 10:31 AM diesel engins can take a hella amount of boost if built propery. example.
my cousin races tractors (yes tractors. pulling events) he has a older tractor with an internatinal TDL6 in it. last time i talked to him he was running 80 psi of boost. that wasnt enugh for him so he was trying to set it up for 120 psi (very possable, but alot of reinforcment work needed to be done) of boost.
i dont know about truck diesels but i would imagin with the same amout of work it would not be hard to accomplish such high amounts of boost.
still man that has gotta hurt your ego a bit. getting eaten by a truck. time for more mods right? :rolleyes
Chbimmer 10-19-2005, 09:48 AM yeah the guy that is cutting my motor mount on my turbo E30 came to pick it up in his dodge............for thos that say 60 is Bs if you have the balls run him on the track then mo powah to ya. he builds race cars but his 8000 lbs dualy runs 8.51 at 85 mph......and now he has a meth kit on it and he said it would be nothing to take my car faster than its ever gone if he wanted too (since it was on the trailer). it is bad.........he launches it in 3rd and no it is not a stock clutch.
Diesel trucks can run 12s when properly modded. Pretty impressive to see a truck with 37" tires, weighing in at 6500 lbs, smoke E46 M3s and STis...
metale 10-19-2005, 10:17 AM Diesel RULES! :buttrock
fastdream 10-19-2005, 11:11 AM bring out yer dead. :D
Diesels rock.
Reprisal 10-19-2005, 02:37 PM i'll chime in on this one, cause there's a few chipped Chevy, Dodge, and Ford diesel trucks that run at our local 1/8th mile strip.... and easily put down 9.3's trapping around 80. I get this sinking feeling when one pulls up beside me... cause I know if he gets on it.... in order to beat him i've gotta get on it.... hard.
sdwhitney 10-19-2005, 03:55 PM I have learned that when you see any deisel truck with a little bulldog logo, stay away...
These guys have products that get these huge 1 ton trucks to 11 seconds...
http://www.bullydog.com/Home.php
It just proves that you can mod anything and make it competitive.
There are a few videos floating around the web of these trucks pulling low 11's with their work racks still on.....
metale 10-19-2005, 04:20 PM Diesel is way understated in the US. Turbo-diesels are the most sold cars in Europe.
M3///Dude 10-19-2005, 04:39 PM Funny how somtimes we get suprised in a run with the most unlikely vehicle in a drag race, ...trucks. I remember when i had my a$$ handed to me by a
S15 GMC Syclone a while ago at a stop light run. :confused
Trepan 10-21-2005, 01:11 PM ive seen diesel trucks that run 10s... stock turbo
No you haven't..
diegom6 10-21-2005, 01:31 PM Diesels has more BTU, hence has more power.:)
Dark Helmet 10-21-2005, 01:42 PM here's a real-world example...
96 dodge, 3/4-ton, stock turbo I/C, etc... wastegate, boost controller, uber-exhaust, couple other small goodies...
700ft-lb+ at the WHEELS... peak boost of 32psi.
it has a gaping hole in the I/C right now and still makes 22psi...
this truck (extended cab, long-box, lift, off-road tires, etc) pulled on a 528 on the interstate.. where the E39s tend to be quite peppy. 60-85, he just left it in 5th and pulled.
truck has over 300K on the clock...
total investment was somthing like $1500-2K.
sdwhitney 10-21-2005, 01:49 PM Dodge Ram Diesel 1/4 mile in 10.41
http://videos.streetfire.net/Player.aspx?fileid=AEF04659-DD14-4F12-A745-B03647540308&kw=73&p=6
Now we can all say we have seen a 10 sec diesel......
TooHot 10-21-2005, 02:04 PM Yeah, but you would have defintiely taken him through the twisties.
02ImolaM3 10-21-2005, 02:16 PM My buddy has an 05 Ram 2500 with the 6.0L cummins turbo diesel.
Not sure of his boost, but he makes around 790lb/tq and over 400hp.
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 with the Hemi ...it was pretty quick bone stock for a truck of its size....definitely true about being the fastest stock utility pickups.
I have Corsa exhaust
Headers
Throttle body
Mopar CAI
high flow cats
hypertech programmer III
and soon to have a 100 shot of ZEX.
I have beaten up on quite a few 1998-2004 mustang Gts and a bunch of imports. from a dig the truck is quick!.....i topped it out around 118mph once....but the truck is very quick from a 50/60 mph punch to about 80mph....over 3000rpms is the sweet spot for the hemi and I have passed mustang gts on the highway and they look very surprised when I pull around them and floor it. of course...anything over 60mph they can beat up on the truck.
I cant wait to get the Zex nitrous kit for it though....right now my truck sits around 400hp / 450lb/tq. with the ZEX ill be over 500hp. (400rwhp)
Irish03 10-21-2005, 02:31 PM Here in Lubbock, we have something called the "Lubbock right turn." It's called that for the behemouth cars that have to make a complete stop to make a right turn because they handle so poorly.
02ImolaM3 10-21-2005, 09:02 PM what does that have to do with a ram diesel being "faster" than alot of cars???
no one buys a big truck to handle...they buy them for utility and some of them just decide if the trucks have the potential for big power...why not?
No one is buying a truck to compete with M3s on a reg basis. esp for handling purposes...
Real world....be careful on the freeway because a truck can OWN you in whatever car you are in if they are done right. (and for VERY cheap TOO)
My dog truck,03 chevy duramax crewcab dually 4x4 with 8 dog kennel box (+1200 lbs) puts down 773 ft lbs at the wheels, and for a big old truck its pretty darn quick. I did injectors, exhaust, intake and computer. I think it would smoke my m3 for the first 1/8 mile or so.
I installed a programable Juice and Attitude monitor, a CAI and a 5" exhaust from the turbo back on my 01 F350 and promptly blew the transmissoin. After 3 grand in a race built transmission the truck can handle the torque but it is way to heavy to run with the M5. There is something amazing though about a dually that can smoke its tires.
cdiken 12-25-2005, 04:01 AM Tuning kits are out for the E320 CDI Mercedes in the US.
I went with Carlsson, my CDI is making SKOOKUM power, about 425 lb/ft. Be very weary, especially out of the hole, you're likely to be clowned unless you are prepared to go all-out. But you might get clowned anyway. That's a lot of torque in a 3800 lb vehicle.
curbsideprophet 12-25-2005, 02:11 PM do the new 1 series come with a turbo diesel?
metale 12-25-2005, 02:54 PM Yeah, the 118d and the 120d. 120d is nice, torquey... ;)
curbsideprophet 12-25-2005, 03:07 PM has there been any modding of a 1 series yet? id like to see it if there has.
bloxsom 12-25-2005, 05:11 PM my friend jake has a dodge cumis diesel and it runs 11 in the 1/4 mile.
that truck is crasy fast!!
warrentt 12-27-2005, 08:19 PM I would be scare if this truck is behind me on a freeway......better off, let it pull your car and save some gas
wayne325 12-27-2005, 09:37 PM Hey guys. How the heck do you get a diesel to 60 psi or even 37 psi
for that matter ? Why doesn't it just preignite and grenade itself (keeping
in mind of course as one poster said that it doesn't have any spark plug
contolling the time that the ignition occurs) ?
How this whole thing works is torque. Mathematically what is occurring
in a race is the engines are integrating the area under their torque
curves (all else being equal). These diesels can have enormous torque but
not huge power - all that means is keep the revs relatively low and shift quick. It will win in a 0-60 but it is not geared to go 150 MPH. If the race
is to 80 MPH the truck may well win but if the race is, like 10 miles, then
the car wins. The other thing that trucks are REALLY BAD at doing is
braking because they are biased all wrong for when they are empty.
You don't want to get in front of one of these things and nail the
brakes in your M3 because you're going to have a "DODGE RAM" imprint
in your rear deck.
wayne325 12-27-2005, 09:39 PM Oh and by the way.
If you want to see crazy fast to 30 MPH, try and race an electric
trolley bus if they have them in your city. And prepare to lose.
redline effect 12-28-2005, 12:27 AM my brothers got a ford diesel turbo. He was telling me the other day that your able to software updates and stack brands for higher boosting
Sparetire 12-28-2005, 12:12 PM I rmember this guy in Ft. Collins CO that had an old Dodge something or other. He launched in 4WD hi mode. It was disturbing.
