Me and a good buddy of mine did about 6 runs from 50+ and I was surprised by the results. I beat him 3 times and he beat me 3 times. We did one run over 100mph and I pulled a car length ahead before shutting it down!

All in all, I would say that we were roughly even. I didn't think that I could run with him as well as I did. His only mod is Borla Exhaust. His T/A is a 6 speed, mine is a 540ia stock with gutted cats.

I'm not surprised. I ran a ws6 dead even from a stop to 130 plus. I think there is quite a variation in the engines. Some people are reporting low 13 quarter miles at 109 plus, some high 13's at just above 100. Possibly there is some deterioration due to mileage/age or how well the car's been maintained.

The big bimmer V8 is a beast at hwy speeds, and the cd is probably lower than the ws6 as well. Nice runs.

Thanks man. At the drag strip he ran a much better time 11.7 in the 1000 foot to my 12.8. We only got one run in, and it was my first time ever at the track with the 540.
I'm sure from a stop he would beat me badly, but clearly from a roll we are very close.

From what I've gathered from Phanta-Z, the T/A, WS6, z28, and SS are all relatively the same, give or take 10-20 whp, depdning on weak or strong engine, adn if people got the optional exhaust on the ws6 or SS.

Now, also, these things are often used, abused, and not maintained for crap. So they can deteriorate relatively quick. They are fast as hell, their owners know it, drive the piss out of them, but they don't take care of them at all, so in no time flat, they are a pile of crap just sporting a fast badge. :(

Very true indeed. My buddy bought his T/A new and really hasn't abused it much. Just on our few trips to the ¼ mile dragstrip.

Why are you giving us 1000 foot instead of 1320? :shifty

What drag strip is close to Springfield? Springfield is my hometown. :)

pretty much what a SS is to a z28, the ws6 is to a trans am.

They were only doing 1000ft that night. I'm not sure if that is a permanent thing or not. It had been 2 years since I went to the strip, and they used to do ¼ mile runs.

Oh, and it's Ozark international raceway in Rogersville, MO

I've never heard of a 1000 ft. sprints. I had heard of 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile track for drags but not a 1000ft. Weird

There's a lot more than four. It is the second most common name for cities. Second to Mt. Vernon. I've lived in both in MO.

I've been to Rogersville to watch the stock cars on the short track. I didn't know they had a drag strip. Cool. A BMW at the drag strip out there would be almost like a UFO landing, I'd guess. :stickoutt

is it? LoL, I know I am up at Ft Belvoir, staying in Springfield, when I was first heading up here from florida, I typed Springfield, and it showed 4 small maps on mapquest (i didn't look to see if it had other results).

mt. vernon is a common name? Jeez, I'm about 15-20 mins from Mt. Vernon up here too (Washingtons House location or whatever).

LS1 motors are very durable, many taking nitrous or boost into the 100k+ mi range. Mine personally is at 83k miles and going VERY strong. However, if you don't keep up with the maintenance, or do stupid, counterproductive "mods" (these seem especially prevalent with Fbodies and Mustangs) you can hurt these cars performance badly. Ive seen a few LS1s such as these producing numbers closer to LT1s and in one case, somewhat worse than an LT1. Of course, I don't know of any performance car (hell any car period) that if not properly maintained and upkept, will not loose performance over time. :cool

Giter, yes you are correct, finally Ive gotten through to at least one person!!! There are much greater variances car to car than can be detected in any scientific form or fashion while comparing the variations of Fbodies (SS to Z28 and WS6 to TA/Formula).

Wooohooo!!! :cool
I try and pick stuff up, and only spread what I think is truth. If I'm proved wrong, I will never speak it again. It took awhile, but yes, you finally got through my thick skull. :D

Wow, sounds like either a very stout 540i or a poorly running and/or poorly driven WS6. Kinda weird though b/c the difference you give in this "1000 ft" race is HUGE and would seem to indicate he would kill you unless you have serious traction problems off the line or something. But I have also never heard of a 1000ft race either. All I knew is a 1.1 second difference in 1000ft is a slaughter.

Regarding the statement about people not taking care of these cars, I'm not so sure I agree. All the Fbody guys I know seem to take very good care of their cars, especially the WS6 guys. Me personally, I take very good care of my car, as I have all my cars + I kinda view this car as a future collectors item, just MHO though. It's a 99 w/only 29k miles, sits in a garage 80% of the time coated in Zaino and is showroom new condition with a single ding or flaw that I can think of. Yes I do drive it hard from time to time but thats what its meant for. I just keep the oil changed and never had a single problem with it :) These are actually very reliable cars, especially since they are usually driven quite hard. Oh and my GF's 94TA is also mint :)

having a very close friend who owns a 2001 trans am ws6, and now being the owner of a 99 540/6, i can tell you wihtout a doubt the ws6 will pull. its 3rd gear is just incredible, it pulls so hard, finally having traction, and it doesnt stop pulling either. i do however, plan on racing him sometime when i go back to dallas, and just to see how good of a fight i can put up, especially since he OWNED me in my 328is haha.

sorry for the long writeup, but the ls1 is an engine that is extremely stout, and should be feared and respected. it is kindof ironic, though, that chevy calls its 5.7l engine its small block haha...

Your are correct in your first paragraph. Generally speaking, a well driven LS1 is closer to an M5 than a 540. The M5 trapping a consistant 108-109, for an LS1 fbody that would be a strong running stocker, or a light bolt on car. Either way, the LS1 is generally out of the league for a non-M 5 series.

Well got together with my buddy for the first time since we raced. He says that the 3 times he beat me he launched from 3rd, and the 3 times I beat him he launched from 4th gear. So I stand corrected.

On another note, I probably shouldn't have talked about it at the dinner table...his wife didn't look too amused by our escapade!
