I wanna meet w/someone and just try to test fit your wheel on my car. If you got 245/40/17's that would be even better.
I got a set of 18x8.5" w/235/40/18's that don't fit on my car. I wanna see if it's just the height of the wheel/tire combo or something else. I bought them used and seen them mounted on another E36, so I don't know why it won't mount on mine.
It should only take like 30 min. max of your time. I don't need to drive on them, I just wanna see if they'll fit.
Thanks in advance,
JT

Are you downsizing to a 17" wheel?
If so, I have 255/40/17's that fit fine :)

No, I got a 17x7.5 Motosport w/235/40/17 that fits fine right now, but I have a set of 18x8.5's. I wanna put the 18's on, but they don't fit up front. The tire hits the strut assembly. I just wanna see if a stock 8.5 will fit on my car.
If you got the 255 mounted on a wheel I'd be down to meet up w/u and see if it will fit.

I don't mind, where in the bay area are ya? I'm running 6mm spacers up in front for clearance. Reason is because the stock 8.5 contours are a 41# offset.

The height shouldn't be a problem cuz I have 19x8.5 w/ 235/35/19's on mine and I'm not hitting the strut assembly.

WTF?!?!?! Everyone is fitting there wheels except me! :mad
I swear to you, I tried to mount them and it hit the strut assembly in front. What's the specs on your wheels and what susp. you running. Here's mine:
Stock springs
Bilstein struts (new design)
17x7.5 Motorsports w/235/40/17's (these fit)
18x8.5 +41 w/235/40/18's (these are not fitting)

Just a WAG because I had a similar problem (rubbing on the inside fender wells) on my E39 when trying to mount M5 rims/tires. I found the backs to rub and couldn't figure it out. Shouldn't have rubbed because the body style is the same on my 530 vs an M5.
Turns out the tires rub when the suspension is at full extension (tire off the ground). Once the car is back down on the ground, I didn't have a clearance problem. Since you didn't mention if this rubbing is when the axle is unloaded, I don't know if it's the same issue that I had.

I thought maybe that was it too, so I spaced the wheel out a little bit so that I could at least mount it. At ~15mm I could bolt the wheel up and put it on the ground. When I did that tho, the tire came in contact w/the front strut. I didn't drive it, but it looks like it would rub pretty bad.

For reference, these are the wheels that I bought.

I'm beginning to think that maybe they are. I didn't examine them THAT closely before they were installed, but they appeared to be about the same. I'm gonna jack up the car tommorrow and try to compare them closely.
