View Full Version : E46 M3 vs. Porsche Carrera vs. ZX-7r
littlelee1 07-07-2005, 11:21 AM Coming home after work pretty late at night, around 11'ish I suppose.
Happily driving the speed limit listening to the radio w/ cruise control on. Not paying any attention to my rear view, suddenly a late 80's to early-90's Porsche Carrera and a Zx-7r bike literally FLY past me.
I sit shocked for a moment, then a goofy grin appears on my face and I catch up as they have slowed down. Freeway is pretty much deserted, no one is really on the road so it's pretty safe.
The porsche was a carrera (I am not to "up to date" on porsche models, however it did say carrera on the back) It was extensively modded, from what I could see/hear- Exhaust, Intake, BBK, Nice set of deep dish rims, front splitter, roll cage, harness, pillar gauges, suspension work, and his exhaust was glowing red hot when I caught up. I believe it was turbo'ed? Don't hold me to that though.
The bike obviously was just having fun so I don't have to include him in this race. (Painfully obvious he smoked both of us)
Only did two races:
1st race-70mph roll on: Honk three times and we both accelerate off, he pulls about 1 1/4 cars untill 120 mph. During the entire race his exhaust is just shooting out black/gray smoke from the pipes and his tailpipes are glowing bright orange-red again.
2nd race- 100 mph roll on: Honk three times and we fly off, he pulls roughly a quarter panel on me, then I pull about 2 cars on him till 171 mph. Don't worry I removed my D&G tie to make sure it would be safely secured. (171 was indicated on my Speedo, YES WE ALL KNOW BMW HAS SPEEDO ERROR, so lets not argue about this in this thread) I believe the only reason I pulled on him was because he was most likely geared higher than me and started to run out of gears to play with, or maybe I just had a better top end.
We give eachother the thumbs up and I exit a few miles later, bike was no where to be found, he went off on his own little merry way.
Enjoy
Mod's are listed in sig.

And D&G ties are sweet. I have a few of them. They make better shirts though.

Never checked out there shirts before, will now.
giterdone 07-07-2005, 12:05 PM I'm sorry, what is D&G Tie? After I ehard you talk about shirt, I'm guessing it is a clothing company, but I can't recall D&G.
But that sounds like a mean car for the late 80's early 90's one. To go that fast. They were always pretty quick, but weren't no where as impressive as they are now.
littlelee1 07-07-2005, 12:15 PM D&G tie reference is a age old standing joke around these forums. Search for it and there might be something, who knows.
D&G (Dolche & Gabbana) is a french? company that sells expensive clothing/accessories. You could compare them to versace etc.

wayne325 07-07-2005, 02:10 PM So a bit about a 993 - if that's what it was, I gather from your description.
I have an 99 E36 M3 and a 97 993 C2 coupe, so I know how those two
stack up against each other. But I've never driven an E46 M3 so I'm not
much of an authority there.
A 993 is on the order of 265 - 285 bhp stock. Porsche is quite conservative
in its performance claims, so you can count on at least that much from any
particular car. It should weigh in at just shy of 3000 lbs. There's only one
mod on your list that really matters (the turbo) unless he has had many
thousands of dollars of engine work done. Putting an exhaust may get you
10 or 15 bhp max. Not much there to be had. It's a Porsche. It doesn't
need anything else. If it was a turbo, trust me, it would have made short
work of your E46 M3. The 993 model C2 coupes said "Carrera" on the rear
deck lid just under the spoiler (that goes up and down) as you described.
You were probably racing a bone stock C2 coupe other than suspension
mods and wheels, which don't help much in a high speed straight line race.
So an E46 is packing a few hunderd extra pounds but it's got an extra 50 or
more bhp also. I'd think a close race given the drivers are doing about the
best that can be done. The result you describe backs this up - it was very
close.
The 993 will slay an E36 M3 all day long in a simple drag race. In the twisties
its up to the driver, the E36 M3 with a better driver could easily outclass the
993 with a poorer driver. The 993 takes a certain amount of, hmmmm what
shall I call it - "testicularity" - ya thats it - to drive really fast.
The 993s brakes are nothing short of ferocious.
All this said, I love to drive both cars. The 993 has something a little more
special than the M3. Mostly the steering - the magazine writers seem to
like to use the word "telepathic". What it means is that you can feel the
road surface thru the steering wheel. The M3 has none of this. The 993
brake pedal is also very firm and takes a lot of effort compared to the M3.
These are things that can't be measured - they have to be felt.
For those of you familiar with bikes, I tell people that the 993 is like a Ducati,
whereas the M3 is more like an R1. They're both awesome but one of them
has something extra that is emotional.
Over and out..... Hope I'm not hijacking the thread by adding this.....
littlelee1 07-07-2005, 02:52 PM Interesting write up, however this was a late 80's porsche to maybe early 90's. The rear wing was stationary and does not pop up. Looks like a guys porsche who use to be on these boards, he put 181 rwhp at the dyno day we had in Texas.
Also I'm curious as to why you have a M3 but don't signify it underneath your avatar? Show it with pride!
Njim3 07-07-2005, 03:07 PM It sounds like 911 carrera 964 than 993 but they both are a bit slower than E46 M3 excepts 930 (old 911 TURBO). The 930 with basic mod it can be streamly fast car with turbo upgarde it is a monster. The first 930s inported to US in 76 and stop making it in 79. Porsche made 2nd generation of 930s
back in 86-89 and 911TT started from 96 making 400hp. There was no Carrera badge on turbo cars. Anyway it was a good race. I love them both.

What are the Carrera 4S's making power wise these days?
aeryk7 07-07-2005, 03:35 PM All i know is i drove a 94 porsche carrera c2 it was stock atleast i think im not sure if it had tuning because it was a wholesalers car.....
Things that irritated me were : Clutch pedal was too soft, brake pedal was too firm, the clutch pedal was too close to the foot rest--> which means if you wear even a medium width sized shoe you would be trying to press the clutch pedal and the foot rest, also i believe the clutch pedal hinged from the floor board that kind of annoyed me. Handling was alright but i couldnt do a good comparison because i had momo racing seats in the M which mean i felt little to no body roll unlike the porshe where i was sliding all around .Also the interior
I kept telling myself well its not an m3 , because driver involvement just wasnt as fun but this could have been because i have alot more driving time with e36 m3's
aeryk7 07-07-2005, 03:36 PM i thought it was 315hp and roughly same for torque
littlelee1 07-07-2005, 03:54 PM i thought it was 315hp and roughly same for torque
Right on, thanks!

wayne325 07-08-2005, 03:27 PM Gents,
The C4 designation means "carrera 4-wheel-drive".
C2 means "carrera 2-wheel-drive" (rear wheels driven of course)
A C4 is heavier than a C2 by several hundred pounds and is normally a bit
slower as a result in straight line. THe C4 is also easier to handle because
the 4WD is more forgiving. The C2 is in general more of an enthusist car.
The C2 coupe is generally regarded as "the" 911 by purists.
I don't know how one can say the clutch is "too soft" and the brake is "too
firm" in a 911. The brake is definitely very firm. Once you're used to it you
don't want to go back. If I could make my M3 as firm on the brake pedal,
I'd do it. It is very confidence inspiring that when you push the pedal, it
gets to the contact point, then it doesn't move much any more no matter
how hard you press.
I find in general the M3 is very "dead" compared to the 911. It's neutral,
its well composed, it handles very very well. But it's not got the feel of
the 911. I can see some people not liking the 911.
wayne325 07-08-2005, 03:50 PM About the pedals hinging from the floorboard in a 911.....
Where is the hinge in your ankle, at the floorboard or the top ????
I guess that means the 911 is done "correctly" and everything else you could
buy today is done "wrong".... ;)
I can't see how one could think an M3 has more "driver involvement" than a
911 though. The M3 is wayyyyy more clinical.
