I see both cars infront of me at this light.
I hear a toned out v6 engine rev and I figure the two will go for a sprint.
So the light changes and from my view the 300ZX got a better launch. Meanwhile I pass the traffic inbetween myself and those two cars, just so I could see who was winning. Its a 3 lane road, but i insist on staying behind them, so I get behind the 300ZX... I hear the e36 rev up (and he def had stock exhaust, but could have had intake.) Then the 300zx revs and its a toned v6 with a throaty exhaust sound (not bad.) Light changes, and they're off again, the Z about a bumper length infront at the launch... I basically coast behind the Z and get in the 3rd lane, while dropping gear. I was able to get side by side with the Z, and saw that the e36 picked up acceleration too and was basically side by side. I start to walk the z after less than a meter and the e36 also slowly starts to walk it.
I was a full cl head of the Z and about half cl ahead of the e36 by the end.

The e36M and 300zx are a decent match up...that particular Z had an exhaust and seemed to have more torque than the e36, but our bmws were able to out-accelerate the nissan.
- any e36 people have a go with the 300zx?

Non turbos are slow pigs, a TT should pull on a stock M, and once modded at all, it will kill it. Simple breathing mods make a huge difference on these cars, but there are many that aren't mainained properly and with a turbo car, it robs power.

yeah, the TT's are what, like 300+hp, although pretty heavy, enough power. The base v6 is like 220 or some crap around there I think (haven't looked at stats in awhile). They are pretty boat like, but the TT's are nice. But like with every turob vehicle, can run into problems, a second one just multiplies the problem. Many people don't do maintenance, either due to laziness or money. I can understand the laziness, the 300z engine bay is so jam packed, you have to drop the engine to do anything inside there. But if people mod those, they would spank us.

So what you saw, was a poorly maintained and/or poorly driven 300zxTT vs an average (prolly) e36 m3 driven pretty good, or a v6 300zx driven pretty well vs a poorly driven e36 m3.

My friend has a 90 300ZX TT with a little less than 80K miles on it. I believe that he dynoed at like 480 RWHP. It's a garage queen but that car is quick. He's a Z car fanatic who always had a Z in the garage. He says that his current one is the last because he doesn't like the new ones. I think he is attempting to move over to Porsche.

Yea, that e36 was pretty stock though... The nissan driver could have done better, i think... It shouldn't have been as easy for me to pass, but i think his turbo were stock and old...Great sounding car either way.

Honestly, it was slightly tough to get side by side with him, but once it happened I began to walk him

also most poorly maintained 300zx's go into safety boost and they only hold 7psi until the problems fixed. I have seen many with this problem. But stock for stock a e36 M and Z should be a good match but modded the Z will win hands down.

I raced my buddies 92' 300zx with exhaust and intake. This was when my car was completely stock, and I still put about 4 cars on him from a dig.
I will confirm that it did launch good, but fell off hard after 2nd gear.

yea, this 300Z couldn't really keep up after several meters...
