View Full Version : 328is vs 350z convertible
WeiBCoupeE36 07-03-2005, 02:14 AM so ya, im driving to a house party bout to get on I-240 and i see a 350z roadster turn the same way and get on the on ramp. now to me, i still wonder about the notorious 350z beating a 328is hands down, but tonite...i proved the rumor wrong. now dont get me wrong, i like 350z's, i wouldnt mind owning one. anywayz, to the kill.......accelerating on the ramp, he can hear my d'baf'd air box roar and i start to creep up to him. he gets around a few cars, and i pull up next to him. i put it in 3rd at 60 and tap the throttle a bit to get his attention. i point forward and he shakes his head no, he wants me to go first. so i blip the throttle to make him downshift since i was waiting in 3rd. as soon as i see him engage, i go WOT. i expected him to pull on me since his motor stock pushes out 287hp outta V6 compared to my 190hp I-6. i pull about a car length on him thru 3rd, go into 4th and start to slowly walk away, and he shuts down first at about 120. now i was amazed that i could pull on one of these due to the rumors. and not to mention that i had a passenger with me in the car. even tho i beat one, i still give respect to the car. either way, he pulled up to me, and gave me a grin and a thumbs up saying good run and my car was really nice, and really loud. i returned the gesture and some wording too. he wanted us to join him in bricktown to pick up some chicks, but we were already heading to a house party, so we waved and went about our ways.
hnoppenberger 07-03-2005, 05:14 AM i believe it, 350s are alot of money for what you get... my uncle has one, driven it a few times, was unipressed BUT hes gonna have a sc put on it... should give it some go after that.

You should race one and see what happens :devillook
gti1689 07-03-2005, 09:52 AM i still wonder about the notorious 350z beating a 328is hands down
it's not a rumor...
almost stock 328is pulling on a 350z roadster on the highway...unlikely. maybe from a dig, but even though it's a roadster it's much faster on the freeway. are you saying that your 328 is equal to or faster than an e36 m3???
i'm turning into somekind of 350z/g35 troll on these boards, but some of these stories are just unbelievable. he's got atleast 100more hp than you, and over 1/2 a liter of displacement. my car is slower than a 350z, and i've raced 4 328's, 2 330i's, and one 325 and never lost. 2 of the 328's were e36 manuals, and they would always pull ahead from about 0-30, but i would reel them in at around 50 and put about 2-3 on it by 100. the other one might have been an auto b/c he didn't hold up as well. the e46 was even worse. the 330 manual that i raced was ahead until 60 (better launch on his part-got a car on me from the start-still had a bumper at 60), but then i passed him at 70 and put a about 1.5 cars on him by 100. the auto 330 was waaay slower, and the 325 was no contest.
i hope no one makes up these things to jump on the "my stock 325/328/318 can kill a 350z" band wagon. my opinions are based off of my quarter mile times compared to a 350z, my experinces in street racing, and common sense.
mods: am i doing something wrong by always questioning these kill? i don't want to get yelled at. :stickoutt

It gets old... and if it leads to trouble, flames, or posts getting locked... we'll eventually decide that where there is smoke, there is fire, and we'll rid ourselves of any catalysts or instigators...
kartman2 07-03-2005, 11:24 AM I don't see why you all can't simply take these stories for real. Simpley stated
horsepower stats etc. don't always mean one car is faster than another.
There are always other factors that will determine whether one car is faster
than another, even though the printed facts may indicate elsewise.
1/ Driver quality
2/ Strength of an individual car (individial cars may be stronger than others)
3/ Road factors
etc,etc.
Awhile ago I also went off against a 350 hardtop and stayed with him getting
onto a toll road from around 40 to 110 mph. This was not a figment of my imagination and he was giving all he could. These events do occur even though the Hp stats etc. would indicate otherwise.
Give the guy a break.
onutsguy 07-03-2005, 12:54 PM It gets old... and if it leads to trouble, flames, or posts getting locked... we'll eventually decide that where there is smoke, there is fire, and we'll rid ourselves of any catalysts or instigators...
Is this for real? You'll need to be gentle with that policy, I would assume.
Boy, more and more of these stories are just becoming so far fetched that it's hard to believe, even with a REALLY open mind. Absolutely impossible, no... Just REALLY hard to believe even under the most dire of conditions... Giving over 100 HP to the other guy and pulling on him a car lenghth in the money gear, then through 4th there's a slow but steady pull??!!?? That is HUGE. I really doubt even an E36 M could do it, much less any other E36 3 series without forced induction. I've run with a number of 350's and G35's and every E36 3 series version made, so yup, I am reasonably knowledgeable about their performance cababilities. 350's and G35's are great cars from top to bottom. ( Think of them as the Japenese rendition of a E36 M3, minus a little of the interior quality and driving "soul", but with a little extra grunt. )
It's like a 540 or M3 claiming to beat a Viper.... Possible?!? God, I suppose under the most incredible circumstances the automotive world has ever seen, but pretty darn unlikely.... Not to mention no one would ever believe it, even if it did happen... You make posts like that, or like this one, and you damn well better expect at least a little trouble making people believe, flames, serious doubters, etc..... Action = Reaction
Oh well, I'm just trying to make the point that if we're going to consider or start banning and penalizing people for having a strong reasonable doubt about some of these "races," then we're going to need to do the same with people posting impossible to believe stories, too.... Especially the cases when almost every measurable automotive fact lies on the side of the doubter. :confused
Consider the other guys with the 3 series that will read stories like this and then go looking for 350's expecting the same results.. What a let-down they're in for, huh?!? At least with a few reasonable, non-threatening posts about members having a reasonable doubt, drivers will understand that these "race" results are not to be routinely expected. They might understand that these were terribly rare results in a race between these two vehicles.
Anyway, great run and sorry for my rant. You must be a great driver with a very strong motor in the engine bay. You'll have to start looking for Corvettes and modded Evo's now.... JK :buttrock
Good luck and good times,
Scott
wayne325 07-03-2005, 12:55 PM Other factors to consider....
Weight: who has an extra person (that maybe wasn't mentioned in the story),
who has how much gas in the tank.
Tranny: Who has an auto vs manual
Rev limiter: Maybe one goofy guy hits the rev limiter and is slow shifting -
that takes you to basically 0 power for a second or maybe more while the
other person gets more than 0 power.
etc etc etc.
Not to mention:
Everyone here seems to be dismissing another very very very major factor.
A drag race is all about turning gasoline into kinetic energy. How that
happens is much more than one car's peak hp figure being greater than
another car's peak hp figure. When you do a drag race, you're integrating
the area under your engine's torque curve as you go up thru the gears.
The other car is doing the same. How well you drive against the other
person has to be taken into account to figure the final result. If one person
is a putz when he/she is driving and the other person does a brilliant drive,
then ya a lower powered car can win a drag race.
On a track it's even more up to the driver (as you would well see as I,
driving my 1994 BMW 325is, passed not one but 2 different <2 year old
996 TTs all during my first DE - ARRRRRRRRR BILLY !!!!!!!)
I can believe that some 328's with some drivers will beat on some 350Z's
with other drivers.
kartman2 07-03-2005, 02:03 PM Good note from wayne 35 and no an E36 vs a 350Z is a far cry from matching
a 540i against a Viper. Sh--- happens and as I stated earlier, it happened
to me. I still do not understand why many of you think the 350Z is such a
wonderfull car. Been in one, raced one and not that impressed. My 2 cents
worth.
WeiBCoupeE36 07-03-2005, 04:04 PM i understand where all of you are coming from, maybe i just got lucky. just to clear a few things, we were both stick shifts, and i was the one with the extra person with about...little over 3/4 of a tank. maybe he had a drag factor with his top down, i dont know. MODS: no arguments here, just stating some stuff. ino that if i raced one from a dead stop.....i would probably get owned, but it all depends in driver. i never thought that i could just go out and beat a 350z tho. ive seen the other stories. i just happened to see one with a driver around my age(21) and figured he would have some fun. the outcome shocked me tho. i really thought i would have got owned
amdspitfire 07-03-2005, 04:10 PM numerous 328s have beat 3250z and g35's
i have yet to lose 2 a g35c
why did he call your car loud, when its just debaffled?
SilverStreak 07-03-2005, 04:15 PM Is this for real? You'll need to be gentle with that policy, I would assume.
Don't assume anything... anyone deemed a troublemaker, as an instigator or antagonizer of any kind, and one who is a repeat offender of such conduct will be removed from the forum after enough BS.
If we get reported threads about the same guy, or if the same guy rants the same crap over and over again, which leads to flames or threads getting locked = source of the problem.
Source removed = problem solved. We're here to keep the peace, not take sides in who is right or why... the bottom line remains, if trouble starts cuz of something you post, and you continue to post in a like manner over and over again, we'll eventually step in and make the decision for you, as to whether or not to return to this forum...
638E36 07-03-2005, 05:06 PM Well driving skill is a major factor for every race. if only going straight no turning or braking, then housepower is major factor. Once i was driving a 90 horse-power korean car(rim+tire mod only), and i can still beat many stock prelude/intergra. etc....i must say, horsepower become useless when come to cornering. yes they always go faster after corner. but also heavy brake and gas work before and after corner. also racing on street with all that traffic, quickness and handling are more important and if you know the street better also give you more chance to will(like which lane with less traffic in certain area).. and now i still beat many G35 on the road.
WeiBCoupeE36 07-03-2005, 05:21 PM numerous 328s have beat 3250z and g35's
i have yet to lose 2 a g35c
why did he call your car loud, when its just debaffled?
its loud cuz not only did i take that lil tube out of the box, but i also took the swivel tube off that runs from the box to the grill...it opens up a lot of noise...kinda releases the beast within :buttrock :D
JedzE36/5 07-03-2005, 05:25 PM well i got to vouch for brandon on this one. why? because i was right behind him when this happened. we get on the on ramp and the 350 cuts through traffic like a bat outa hell. i hear brandon's debaffed motor scream and he catches up to him. i speed up so i can watch. brandon had 1 person in the car and so did the 350. they went from a roll at about 60 and i could hear both cars punch it. now brandon didnt kill the Z but he did walk away. next thing i know the guy slows down and i look at him and he is pretty pissed. so what do i do? i give the guy a thumbs up and speed off to catch brandon (because his ass is the only person who knew how to get to the party).
*edit: ok so brandon said the Z only had one person. i could have sworn (as well as my passenger) could have sworn there was a passenger. but they again i wear glasses.
turbospool 07-03-2005, 08:47 PM since it was the convertable version i dont think you should be overly surprised i have driven in a 350z which wasnt really being pushed but i think they have more than enough to overtake a 328 as long as it isnt an auto covertable
328ischef 07-04-2005, 12:27 AM I must say im not all to impressed with the Z's. I went to the local Nissan Dealer and told them that mommy and daddy would be buying me a new car (I WISH!), so they very easily handed me the keys to their Nismo 350z, the one with all the expensive ****. It was 287 HP or whatever and I wasnt really impressed. It sounds very nice but isnt too user friendly. The guage cluster reminded me of KITT from nightrider, not too coherent. Also, you cant see shit in the Z's. I guess you get accustomed to using soley the side mirrors very fast. If you look over your shoulder, all you see is seat and interior. They are nice cars and all, but not worth 35 or whatever thousand dollars. Ill stick with my M52!
Edited profanity...

I'm getting sick of editing out the profanity here, people. And I warned someone else earlier in this very thread.
If you can't read, we'll just have to start locking threads again, and tossing people in Time Out for the smallest of infractions.

The rules are the rules. You either follow them, or you'll be removed from here. It's really that simple.
I did him a favor by not tossing him in TO, and but taking the extra time to edit his post, and keep this post open.
I will not discuss policy here on the boards, if you got a question, PM me. I just sent you a PM. Read it.
Otherwise your time here is growing shorter by the minute.
Read it, love it, or you'll be forced to leave it. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205093
