View Full Version : NY state auto laws..help!
live2roll 07-03-2005, 01:55 AM if you have noticed ive been posting a lot about this area lately its cuz im just moving here (long island) and kno nothing about the state and am trying to learn. i tried searching a bunch but cant find some specific auto laws. basically i need to know the basics. what kind of mods can you do to your car without being hassled? If i buy a new car (possibly out of state) do i need to get it smog checked before i can register it? If so, what kinds of things would make it non-legal or make it hard for me to get registered. I'm looking at a car in North Carolina right now that is modded I need to know if I will have trouble registering it. I know in cali its really hard to get a car from any other state registered due to high cali standards, especially on a modded car. Also, tinting your front windows...legal? thanks for any info you can give me i need to get a car asap and need am trying to learn all this stuff quick!
Wiseguy ON 07-03-2005, 04:46 AM The smog laws are crazier in Cali vs anywhere else in America.
NY Requires emissions and safety inspections, unlike CA which only does an emissions check. Mods won't fail you unless you have check engine light on or otherwise fail the test.
I think front window tint will fail you on the safety inspection but don't quote me. A lot of people have it anyways.. depends on which independent inpsection place you go to ;)

and unfortunately you have to have 2 stickers on the window :( inspection and registration. looks ugly as fuck.
you can have up to a certain precentage tint on the front windows in ny. i believe its 35% but dont hold me to that. its light, but there. the rest is like jeresy/most other states where you could paint them black if you want.
im moving to syracuse in a month, so im trying to figure all this shit out too (my car will not pass any kind of emmissions testing at all).
live2roll 07-03-2005, 06:23 PM Well the car I'm buying is a Ford Lightning (need a truck for now) and it has an upgraded turbo but the guy I'm buying it from says it passes all inspections in North Carolina which makes it legal in New York as well.
dogpile 07-03-2005, 11:01 PM as long as it passes emmissions, it doesnt really matter what you have done. of course you need to look like you have a cat, which is where i fall flat on my face
live2roll 07-05-2005, 04:26 PM thanks for all the help i got a decent idea of it all now. by any chance do any of you from out here know an online site that ppl might use out here to sell cars besides the usuals (autotrader, cars.com, ebay) thanks again
sirtiger 07-05-2005, 10:55 PM Tints are not legal in NY. But you can pass inspection as most shops look the other way. Most cops won't give you a hassel either.

i was told by quite a few ny people that it is legal, and mr traffic says it is too (http://www.mrtraffic.com/tint.htm) , but a few other sites say its not. go figure
sirtiger 07-06-2005, 08:54 PM ^^not sure about that source

I heard of people in NY got tixs too.
vas2vas 07-06-2005, 10:33 PM you have up to 10 days to inspect the car after registering it... out of state tittle not a big problem (done it twice :-)
diesels are exempt from emissions, only safety test...
M3Blurr 07-07-2005, 01:27 PM In NY a certain % of tint is legal. You have to get your tint inspected at a DMV to see if the tint % is legal. If it is legal they (DMV) will put a small sticker on each window with tint. Police can not tell when they pull you over if it is legal or not without those stickers so they give you a ticket if you do not have them regardless of what you tell them. This is also going back 5 years since I have not lived on Long Island since 2000. Hope this helps.

medic754 07-08-2005, 10:16 PM Some police agencies DO have the meters to measure the amount of light passing through tinted windows. If it is not enough, they WILL write you a ticket.
Front tint is entirely illegal (I assume you are asking about the driver's and passenger's side windows and not the windshield {duh}), but most will let you slide if it is lighter than the rears. In the past, I have made mine two shades lighter than the rears and have never had a problem.
As with anywhere else the amount of paper you get at a traffic stop is directly related to who you are and how you carry yourself. If you are a ghetto punk with all kinds of mods, you're going to get hassled. If you are a business man driving a 7-series, they don't care about things like tint.
Hope this little bit helps.
live2roll 07-14-2005, 04:39 AM thanks for all the replies they were a lot of help. ANOTHER QUESTION, are radar detectors (i have a v1) illegal or legal in ny??? thanks!!
