Ok, my bro has a '99 323i.

A month or so ago, I dropped it off to (we thought) have a 6 disc changer installed, as it only had a tape slot in the headunit.

I never talked to anyone. I talked to him, and he said that he asked for a cd player to be installed. Simple enough....yet not specific enough I guess.

End result = one very expensive brand new headunit with a cd slot instead of tape slot. Don't recall exact price, but was in the $700-$800 neighborhood.

So my question is:
if you were the service advisor and a client asked to have a cd player installed, would you:

1) Install a new very expensive headunit or
2) Install a 6 changer that is several hundred dollars cheaper?
3) If unsure, as the customer for clarification?

Kinda curious...we were amazed upon picking the car up, lol...

As a side note, any idea's what a OEM headunit out of a 323i is worth? I have the job of selling the removed unit.

A sharp service advisor would have priced the CD changer and the Business CD head unit for your brother and given him the choice.

Thats really strange that an exact unit wasnt chosen when they installed the cd player...because they could have taken his request to "install a cd player" as meaning going out and buying the most expensive unit available and putting it in...so i would have to question (on both sides) why the details werent worked out...kinda like bringing your car in and asking the service guy to "Freshen up the interior" and he replaces every thing from the seats to the floormats, gives it to you with a multi-thousand dollar tab...
