Does ///M claim the Z8s like they do with the 850csi? I understand that Z8s have the S62 ///M5 engine, and I am wondering if their VIN's starts with WBS like all ///Ms.

"WBS" ist the world manufacturer identifier for BMW's M GmbH plant in Munich, Germany.

The Z8's are built in BMW's AG plant, also in Munich, Germany, so they receive the "WBA" world manufacturer identifier.

I think there were 2 types of Z8.

The first ones did indeed have the M5 engine in them.

The latter one have the X5 4.4 engine in them.

Someone feel free to correct me on this if I made a boo-boo.

Is the Alpina version the one with the 4.6? Also, what kind of performance drop did this introduce?

Alpina does not seem all that hobbled on further investigation:

They also say it has a 4.8, not a 4.6.

The original Z8 was powered by the BMW V-8 5.0 liter 394 hp M engine, the same engine used in the BMW M5.

The Alpina Z8 uses the B10 engine, a specially developed version of BMW's "regular" V-8 engine. The Alpina engine is a 4.8-liter with 375 hp, with individual throttles for each of the eight cylinders and many other racecar-like engineering features. The power peak of the Alpina engine comes at 5800 rpm vs. 6600, and its torque peak occurs at the same 3800 rpm but is actually higher, with 383 lb-ft. (vs. 368 lb-ft).

...and "Switchtronic" buttons (for controlling the automatic tranny, not SMG!) on the steering wheel.

yea alpina only came in autos and it took like a half a second off their 1/4 mile times. i think the alpina were trying to compare with the sl600s opposed to the more sporty class the manual Z8 was after.

I'm pretty sure the guys who can afford a Z8 would have better things to do than hang around on an internet forum. Like, date supermodels, throw huge parties, dress up in spandex and fight crime at night... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Hitokiri_StarReaver/Random/icon_ninja.gif

are usually at the Roadfly Z8/E52 forum or at bmwz8.us website. If you visit there you will clearly see that it seems that all we DO seem to have time for is hanging around an internet forum! :)

As far as owning one ---- Unbelievable is the only word that comes to mind! I have driving both the Alpina and mine (2003 Z8) and they both perform / accelerate about the same. I find the M5 engine (S62) with the manual is more fun than the B10 4.8L w/ auto / paddle shifters.

I just discoverd this forum so I will try to visit more often.

z8doc: Ah... I stand corrected. Welcome to the forum! :) I want to say that you're the first Z8 owner on this forum (by looking at the emptiness of this topic) but I can't be sure. Your cars sound gorgeous! Both the Z8 and the M6! Got any pics?

Like maybe a way better performing car for way less.

and order the new Corvette ZO6 for 2006 and go post on the Corvette forums. The new ZO6 just set the 2nd best time ever on the Nordschlief lap at the 'Ring in 7:42, second only to the Porsche Carrera GT. The Z8 did it in 8:12. Yes, the Corvette is an amazing performer, can be had for about $60K less. It's NOT hand assembled though but Both front engine small block V-8s with rear drive, aluminum chassis and tremedous power to weight ratio. However, the Corvette will be falling apart long before the Z8 will be and the Vette will never be the classic collectible performance car that exudes sexiness from every port. I have owned both, and until getting a Z8, I have NEVER received so many compliments on ANY of my previous cars (although the M6 is close).

Buying a Z8 is NOT just about it's performance. If it was only performance you are after, buy the Vette or stick with the M Coupe. But if you're after a great performance roadster that is and always will be a classic - get the Z8. You would understand that statement if you ever had the opportunity to drive one for a while.

Yes, all Z8s came with the S62 engine (same one in the M5) with 5.0L and 394 bhp with 375 lb/ft of torque with 0-60 in 4.5 sec and 60-0 in 2.5 sec. Transmission is a 6 Speed manual with electronic limited slip and lots of other state of the art technology. Only 5000 Z8s made worldwide, 2000 US Spec cars made but a few Euro spec cars made it across so the exact number in the US is unknown, but probably less than 2800, including the Alpinas. Mine is chassis number 1995.

The Alpina V8 Roadster, as it is officially known at BMW, was a limited production vehicle by Alpina. They took the Z8, put a bored out 4.4L V8(bored out to 4.8L) and it has 375 bhp with 388 lb/ft of torque. Had a Automatic transmission with button shifting on the steering wheel (NOT AN SMG but the same manumatic that comes in many other BMWs). 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and 60-0 in the same 2.5 sec. Each Alpina has 20" wheels with a serial number in the center console (i.e. 155/555) as there were only 555 units made - all US Spec.

The Z8 is tied with the MB S class for the best in holding it's resale value, most are well above 70% retail with low miles at 3 years or more. Destined to only increase. I have had mine 32 months and it has only depreciated 18%, according to Kelly Blue Book!

Very well phrased about the z8. Are you sure that the z06 is #2 though? That seems pretty odd consitering all the porsches, ferrari's, etc that go out on there.

It is from a reliable source and I believe there is an article on line. The GM race team apparently spent a week at the Ring 'setting the car up', which I am sure added to it's performance. The Z06 I am referring to is the one getting ready to be released (428 ci small block with 500 bhp). The fastest Vette yet to be produced. The fact that it is #2 at the Ring is the point -- considering all the above use it regularly as their home track -- finally, the Vette is the performance car it was always meant to be. Now what I find intriguing about this is that like the Z8, the Vette is a vehicle that is a monster HP front engine, rear drive, aluminum frame car -- so it demonstrates that basic formula is still good for great performance considering all of the others you mentioned are either mid or rear engine vehicles (which is what all the top end sports cars seem to be).

I am sure, that record will not stand for long, especially looking ahead to what BMW (the Z10 midengine supercar - 550 bhp !), but still..... I can't wait to see that one !
