Havn't heard of any changes for '06
I know there was a ECU "bluedot" upgrade that I believe works for all models that @ lesat somewhat combats sluggish shifts...

Every Z4 owners seems to rave about SMG after they get used to it though...

I agree, i know someone with an smg who feels the same way. I think i might just go with the 05. I'm not waiting until fall for the 06 "what will i drive til then"!~, plus i know i'll get a great deal on an 05 :buttrock

I've driven both as my coworker has an 05 SMG. I personally prefer the 6-spd manual, but of course YMMV. Any reason that you wouldn't want the manual?

As a race car enthusiast I LOVE MANUAL CARS WITH ALL MY HEART nothing like the feeling of complete control. Also as a race car enthusiast i want to experience new ways of performance driving. SMG (which is a manual transmition with gears that change hydraulicly) is used on F1's, Formula one cars... Gears shift at 0.2 seconds witch is humanly impossible to achieve changing gears with original manual bcuz of the clutch and H pattern of the stick. With the SMG paddles that are on the steering wheel like the F1's it ensures maximum safety while switching gears at lightning speeds. ( I figure SMG is perfect with the right HP and Breaks) --I still love the original stick---
--But wanna try something new---

I hear ya as to want to try something new and that's what the F1 drivers use, etc, etc. :buttrock And I think it's ultracool. I guess for me I have come to learn that while I will play in the Z often enough :stickoutt I don't do hard enough driving (ie at a track) that would truly require me to have the SMG transmission.

And regardless if I'm casually rowing through the gears or if I'm driving a little more spirited :cheeburga I like having the control of the manual underfoot.

Plus, there is nothing better than a well executed heel-n-toe downshift IMHO. So cool :redspot

The SMG used in the Z4 is nowhere near as good as the SMG in the M3 for example. Indeed lots of pople who drove it think it sucks. 0-100 km/h is slower in an SMG compared to a manual.

Although I do agree the SMG on the M3 is more accurate/sophisticated I think preference plays a big part

Yeah, sure. That's what buying a car is all about in the end ;) I personally would prefer SMG to an automatic in a sporty car like the Z4.

You have to drive the SMG for yourself to choose which one's the right for you. Especially pay attention to the "head-nodding" thing that happens, if you stay on the accelerator when the car is shifting gears ;) I hated this when I tested the SMG. Especially in automatic mode it sometimes comes all of a sudden.

i've never driven a SMG z4 but my M3 is a SMG and even though it is one of the best with the selector from smooth to lighting fast, i really do not like the paddle gear boxes i prefer manual all the way.

i think that my Z4 is much more fun to drive then the SMG. FULL car control and over all just more fun got to love the heel n toe (although it can also be done on the M3 to get faster and smoother downshifts).
