We currently have COMCAST....they're not very reliable and right now, I am bumming service off my neighbor because Comcast refuses to acknowledge the fact that out cable modem is dead....

I want better. Don't recommend Verizon because my folks hate them, plus they dont offer service in my neck of the woods :confused

So is RCN any good? What about DirecTV's internet service?

You're going to be upset if you switch from Comcast. Well I would be anyway. I've tried nearly every high speed provider (Earthlink, Verizon, AT&T, Comcast) and I must say that Comcast is the best yet. Cable > DSL.

Hmmmm. I'm quite disgruntled right now though...*EDIT: gotta change the title*

Comcast rep. said that he can't send someone out to my parents house because the telephone number that the account is linked to is 'locked' which means their doing some sort of work on it, like diagnostics or some crap...

dcardenas

It's just your modem that's fucked?

Preppy
06-11-2005, 07:15 PM
Probably so, maybe it's me thats fucked, but I can place blame on the modem easier....

What's the problem?

So far I haven't encountered any problems and after I calculated the yearly cost, Cable is $12 more than DSL. So worth it, IMO.

DirectWay is an Extra $500 in equipment.

We have Atlantic Broadband over here, it's ok. I had comcast when I lived in Pasadena and it was alright. But while the house was being built and we stayed in Easton, we had Easton Utilities and it was great!

06-11-2005, 07:35 PM
Somehow our phone# attached to the account has been 'locked' thus preventing the techsupp. guy to do anything. He checked the modem and acknowledged that they were trying to reach the modem, but was not getting a response. He tried to send someone over to the house, but could not because the phone# was locked...:dunno :95

have you asked to speak to a supervisor and found out why the phone number has been locked?

Preppy
06-11-2005, 08:06 PM
nope, but i will now, when i call back. im stupid for not asking that the first time *idiot*

Pretty sure "supervisors" are just regular employees trained to deal with difficult customers. I could be wrong, but I've heard it on a number of occasions. Good luck!

My internet was pretty much out the last couple days. For the most part comcast has been very reliable for me, with this being only the second time I've gotten crappy service. Back when I was in college and had Adelphia it was ridiculously crappy. I was probably better off using dialup.

I have Cox Roadrunner Cable. It used to be really unerliable, but after I changed the cable modem box from the one they rent to a Motorola Surfboard, it hasnt crashed once.

I use Cox myself, and it's been great. However, my folks just had Verizon FIOS installed at their place last week and it's ridiculous fast. I'd look into it. $40 for 5 down 2 up I think it is? And then $10 more a month gets you 15mb down 2mb up

As far as home interweb goes, cable (Comcast for me) seems to be the best. It's all I've ever had, but more than half of my friends have Verizon DSL and they have more trouble with it that you'd think possible.

You're the second person I've heard of who's getting fiber. The other place is crofton. I'm really hoping the people's republic of Columbia will work out some flavor of oversight incompetence that will allow fiber here.

Sounds like typical Verizon,(Iknow that's not who you're with but),stay away from them.I have RCN and have no probs.I'm actually suprised RCN is an option for you,(you are in MD right?)

Preppy
06-12-2005, 07:01 PM
Well, RCN is offered here in DC at my apartment, so I naturally figured it'd be offered at my parents house as well.

Just an update, internet works again, but when we try to plug in any kind of router, wireless or not, nothing works again and it takes about an hour to get internet back after we plug straight from the modem. It's so bizarre.

I've had verizon DSL for about a year and a half, and it's been super reliable. The only time it's gone down is when I've accidentally unplugged the computer from the phone jack in the wall. Plus, a buddy of mine at work said he called verizon and got them to bump up his DSL to 3Mbps for free (used to be 1.5Mbps down). I did the same thing, called them & they bumped me up for free. Not bad at all.

With my experience with verizon, a definite recommendation.

Yep I have FIOS too. I've had it since April. Absolutely no problems and it works like a charm for tele-commuting. I had Comcast for years before and used their now defunct Comcast Pro product which was $95. But I never had any problems with their service - switched just because FIOS is 100x better and cheaper to boot!

Preppy, the symptoms you describe with the router really make me think it's a configuration issue on your router and not Comcast's problem. Obvisouly that's just an opinion from 50,000 feet away from the problem.

Preppy
06-13-2005, 10:30 AM
Well, I just ordered my folks a new router because my mom said Comcast diagnosed the problem as being the routers fault. They had her run the setup without the router and they were able to ping the computer, but when she added in the router, they received no response, from the modem or computer.

We'll see if a new router will fix it. If not, *insert Jim Carrey's voice* 'cable guy' will have to come over...

Lucky SOB. I check the availability in my area at least once a week... Anywho,to Preppy, if you can get DSL, get it. So much better than cable. I have Speakeasy as my DSL provider. I have a 6.0Mb/768kbps line, with 5 static IP's, host my own servers, and no port blocking what-so-ever. It has never gone down, not once, and it's a dedicated line. Unlike cable which is shared-bandwidth. So all you cable lovers beat that! :la But I do pay twice as much... grrrrr :shifty

Jason, you'll know when it becomes time when Verizon trucks line your street and proceed to dig without a care in the world, rupture a few water/electric lines....

They came through and within 3 days had the fiber laid down in the neighborhood... it took about 3 more weeks though for it to get provisioned from the CO...
