View Full Version : Hey guys, I had my identity stolen...
flyboyM535i 06-10-2005, 02:38 PM This is an official Utah BMW related thread. I live in Utah, I drive a BMW. You are BMW enthusiasts. We like BMWs. Don't tow my thread please, I love you moderators.
Man is this a mess. I've been on the phone with 2 banks, 6 credit card companies, Social Security Administration, all three credit bureaus, the police (haha what a joke that was) and the FBI, all since 6:00AM this morning.
I will explain in detail later. Long story short, about $37,000 in damage, and between my wife and I we have about $15 in cash. LOL
Say a prayer for us. More on this later.
Antwerp 06-10-2005, 02:44 PM OMG. WTF.

black325isgirl 06-10-2005, 03:19 PM That sucks!

croberts12 06-10-2005, 03:41 PM if that happened to me they would get $226.55. I checked today. I hope you get your money back.
Antwerp 06-10-2005, 04:24 PM You have to understand, they would get more than that...
The get as many credit cards and as much other credit as they can!
Then all the companies you owe come looking for you!!!
It's a bum NFG deal... :(

sucks to hear. Hope it works out
Oh that sucks Clay. I will hope for the best for you.
SehrSchnell 06-10-2005, 08:51 PM Before this turns into another stupid freaking cop bashing thread by your above statement, give me a PM if I can give you any direction/input as far as local law enforcement and what their abilities can or cannot do for you.
Hopefully everything is covered by FDIC or where ever the money was stolen from.
PM if I can help.
J-
12:03 06-10-2005, 10:43 PM FDIC?
:confused
Tonus 06-10-2005, 10:50 PM Misfortunes always happen when you're doing an engine conversion :mad
Sorry Clay hope everything works out.
SehrSchnell 06-10-2005, 10:59 PM FDIC?
:confused
As in the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. I guess I am more so thinking along the lines of bank robbery as we and the feds deal with them in the course of a bank robbery since they insure deposits only.
But maybe this could assist Clay: http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/alerts/theft.html
chmdrm 06-11-2005, 12:54 AM A guy I used to work with had some checks stolen out of his mailbox a while back. The thief then got a drivers license in his name, acid washed the checks and went on a spending spree.
Local Law enforment called his wife and asked if she knew her husband was writting a check for a big screen, seeing as how he was sitting across the table from her at the time she said no.
While a huge hassle, I am sure that it will all work out and won't cost you anything.
chasmanbmwfan 06-12-2005, 10:51 AM My understanding is that if someone fraudulently uses your credit card, the credit card company takes the hit, not you. I believe that is also true with check fraud.
Even if that all works out to be the case, however, there is no question that the hassle of working through the problem and the feeling that you have been raped (and not enjoyed it) is still there.
Good luck. It would be interesting to get a report on how things turn out.
SehrSchnell 06-15-2005, 01:04 PM Any update Tys? Hope all went well.

flyboyM535i 06-15-2005, 02:27 PM All accounts have been frozen, then closed, with new numbers and cards issued.
All online usernames and passwords have been changed, and online access turned OFF to a number of my credit card accounts, permanently.
Fraudulent charges on my cards will be reversed after 2 billing cycles.
I am still working with the bank. They will return my money after their pending investigation and all affidavits are recorded.
I have managed to track this guy, I have a string of IP addresses he has been using, 2 phone numbers, and a name. The police and the FBI don't care to take the information from me, and said they won't pursue it anyway; the FBI won't touch it unless is't >$100,000 and the local police say it's not in their jurisdiction...
No wonder this is the fastest growing crime in America. It's guaranteed that you can commit this type of crime and no one will come after you. Guys, I think we're in the wrong line of work. Anyone want to go into the ID Theft business with me?
I can't even get the officer (SL Co Sherriff's office) assigned to my case to call me back so I can get a copy of the report to submit to the credit bureaus (their request) to put a 7 year fraud alert on my credit report (all three bureaus).
I'm seriously researching how to get a new social security number and a new Driver License number from the Driver License Division.
black325isgirl 06-15-2005, 03:28 PM It could be worse. My friend had his identity stolen and besides the money thing, he would randomly get thrown in jail for things the other guy was doing.
He ended up changing his name and having everything reissued with new numbers...
chasmanbmwfan 06-15-2005, 03:31 PM If the guy has any money, you might be able to find an attorney to file a civil action against him on a contingency fee.
