View Full Version : Any good bolt ons for the S54?
mpire 06-10-2005, 10:44 AM Not much is said about getting more power out of hte S54. I was curious if you guys had any ideas for N/A power.
Bored throttle bodies?
Airbox?
Euro headers/cats :D are on the way...

Are you kidding? There's lots of stuff out there on the S54. I recommend checking out stuff made for the E46 M3 as it's the same engine.
Most N/A packages that have significant gains require higher octane gas due to the compression involved, which is problematic for many people.
There are also plenty of people that have gone the FI route.

Contact Joel Swanson at Bavarian Hypersports. He has done several buildups on the E46 M3 motors.

Like you said, exhaust is big. Plug's, coils, pullies, intake, software, BHS has a FDK, etc...

Ditch the 400CPI euro cats and go with a 100or 200cpi cat ala Supersprint/BHS or Larini. Then I would do a AFE intake or K&N your preference...I like the AFE. You can probably sell the euro cats for darn near the amount of what the SS/BHS parts would cost. Dave
What Dave said. Intake, headers, cats. Maybe some pullies for a few more horses. Where are you getting the Euro headers/cats.
Dave, is there a significant difference between the different cat's you mentioned in performance or price?

5-8rwhp going from a 400cpi to a 100cpi cat. Dave
mpire 06-12-2005, 01:54 PM Dave, recomendations on brand of cats? What do they usually run?

PowerCat makes a 300cpi Metallic subtrate that can be welded into place for cats. Several people have done this with good results. I wouldn't go above a 200cpi if it was me. In that case I say go with the BHS cats as they are 100cpi and cheaper than the SS cats. They still are going to be expensive either way you look at it. Dave

Just to let you guys know, from what I've read the AFE Intake made for e46 m3 will not fit on S54 m roadsters/coupes.
Usual Suspect 06-14-2005, 01:12 PM Full exhaust, intake and software should be good enough for an additional 30WHP.
OG RISKER 06-14-2005, 10:25 PM Whats the difference between S52 & S54???

s52 is the engine code for the e36 OBDII (1996-1999) M3.
s54 is the engine code for the e46 M3.

who told you that? have any proof? I think *maybe* you could get that much power if you went with cams as well, but definitely not with just bolt-on parts.
Dave04: thoughts?

His "proof" is called tons of research. And yes, you can expect around 30 rwhp from all of that. With all bolt-ons (full exhaust, intake, cams, software, pulleys, fan delete, etc..) you can expect to get about 310 *true* rwhp..or around a solid 40 rwhp gain over stock. Anything more than this will require increased compression, increased displacement or going FI or NOS.
I say *true* rwhp because dynos vary greatly. Some read high and some read low. Numbers higher than this are typically due to very optimistic dyno machines.
The best way to truly know? 1/4 mile Trap speed. The two fastest N/A cars have only trapped 111-112 mph. And only two of them have done that (one did it in close to 100 degree weather...but it's a high compression motor that makes 335 rwhp...would probably trap 113 on a cooler day). Most highly modded N/A cars trap 109 to 110 (JMWeb and myself both trapped 109 before our S/C's). To trap 109 in our cars at a normal weight of 3,200 to 3,350 lbs, you need to be making approximately 300 rwhp. To trap 110 about 310 rwhp...and so forth.

I dont have people telling me stuff. I try them and see. For a living.

cool beans. what more can you share with us? I saw from your previous posts that you're "more of an OT guy", but I'm sure that the more technically-inclined people on this board would be interested to learn about specifics (what cars you've worked on, what kinds of mods you've installed and tested, what kinds of responses/experiences you've seen) related to your work.
it's one thing to lob a number out on an internet message board in a manner befitting a high-tech bench race. it's another thing to say, "oh, well so-and-so tried this and it worked out like this, and I know because I saw this dyno sheet or timeslip."
just a thought.

Whatever makes you happy. I am not an OT guy. I am new to the forum and when I dont have much to do during my day I tend to spend a lot of time on the internet and online forums. I am not the one that will take your money to install or provide you with the parts. He asks for a number. I ve had these modifications done when I had my M3 and I answer. Another member that has had the same stuff on his car has answered and backed me up.
I am not trying to race you as to who knows more. Maybe it is me or you. 2 years ago maybe I would. But after having been on M3forum for that long and after 10,000 posts I have learned where it is and isnt worth arguing. Even if you dont have a clue about this stuff in the beginning after two years of reading customer feedback you get to know how to estimate power gains from engine modifications.

So what would you say I have for whp?
Im thinking of replacing the headers, to get rid of the raspy sound...not sure how much headers give

Ibiza first off replacing the headers will not get rid of the rasp,in fact it gets louder. It just gets moved to a different octave and now the rasp won't be so tinny. It sounds aggressive as hell...see my sigs for my mods.
Headers/race cats (100cpi) will give you about 15-20rwhp, more importantly your low end tq. gets better and your midrange will be in the +15ft/lbs of tq better, you will feel this.

Thanks - The rasp is more tolerable with this exhaust, and the intake def drains it out in the high revs...
Are SS headers the ones i should look at?

heh...900hp....
I'd rather use that money and sell the car, and look for a Ferrari...
Im all about N/A anyway... If I want to turbo an inline, I'd get a skyline or supra...
unless its a decent few thousand $s?
