View Full Version : How to sneak by emissions?
2002maniac 06-08-2005, 12:32 AM I just picked up a 2002 with an all out race motor. It isnt registered but I would like to drive it on the street every now and then. I dont think there is any chance that a High comp, cammed, dual carbed M10 could pass emissions. What are my options? I was thinking of getting a PO box in park city or some other non-emissions county and registering it there. Do they let you do that? Or do I have to have a residence there? Please help as I would like to bring this beast to the next DA meet. Thanks!
///Molloy 06-08-2005, 12:38 AM take it down to a trim shop on irvine. I hear they got two turbos and a nine-one-one slope.
SehrSchnell 06-08-2005, 01:02 AM what year is it? isnt there a cut-off year for older vehicles needing emissions? Give it a run first and see where you are at. It may pass.
2002maniac 06-08-2005, 02:17 AM it is a '75 I think the cut-off year is either 67 or 68. The carbs are jetted for max power so it runs pretty rich. We'll see...
chasmanbmwfan 06-08-2005, 11:06 AM You need a good friend that works at a shop that does emissions testing who doesn't mind a little perjury on his conscience.
SehrSchnell 06-08-2005, 11:08 AM Just stuff coffee filters in your muffler. It will work, trust me :devillook
Antwerp 06-08-2005, 12:10 PM I've heard Steel Wool also works... :devillook
just de-tune it to make it pass.... its not that hard.
Tonus 06-08-2005, 01:27 PM Performance Emissions and Safety: 2700 South 300 West, north of and right next to American Bush. Maybe just maybe if you play your cards right and tip him well they might do it. Register it, like you said in a county that doesn't require emissions. My track pipe has made me revert to registering my car in Ephraim.
well no matter how much you tip the guy he can only pass you on saftey...emissions is done through a computer hooked up to the state.. the only way to cheat it is pretty much type your cars info into the computer and run a car on the machine that will pass.. ( I am State and I/M certified at B Of M )
VitSports6 06-08-2005, 04:32 PM It does sound like a pain to get a PO box and all the other stuff...BUT I have never had to do it ;) So I think the de-tuning would work easiest :rolleyes :D
Good luck

Ewww. Welcome WVC on stage!

lookin for me to rid you of your competition?
GSBMW325is 06-08-2005, 08:39 PM Isn't the car old enough to not need emissions? I can't remember the cutoff age...
Anyhow, pre-OBD2 is done with a tailpipe tester at Performance. If you can at least get a cat on there, you might pass. My poorly running (at the time) 3.2 OBD1 swap passed easily at Performance... :)
GSBMW325is 06-08-2005, 08:44 PM Ok, just looked at the DMV site. Cutoff age is 1967 so you do need emissions.
If you have friend/family in a non-emissions county, I would register the vehicle there if you fail the test...
Any chance you'll be selling your 318is this year?

When you guys say "detuning" you mean swapping cam, lowering compression, different carb(s) and stuff? I doubt retarding the timing and leaning out the mixture will help alot. Ive got my fingers crossed!
I guess I could always get a 1.8 m10 from a e30 318i and drop it in there with a weber progressive for the test. That will be the last resort in case they dont let me register it with a PO box as a residence.
And were you guys kidding about the coffee filters? lmao
Thanks!
318is for sale? Wasnt planning on it, but everything is for sale at the right price :)
GSBMW325is 06-08-2005, 11:42 PM Well, if someone will ever buy my 328i, a 91 318is w/5-spd & lsd is very high on my list of wanted used cars...
by de-tuning just adjust timing and a/f mixture the car might be gutless as hell for the test but you can make them pass... If you take it to B of M for testing Ask for Wade Dalton or Brent to do it they can probley tune it so it will pass.
Tonus 06-09-2005, 08:15 PM Trust me a big enough tip will pass anything. But yes another car on the machine would work as well.
Molloy I hate you :rolleyes :D always mocking me :( :cool :D :cool
