As per our gamble between myself, Mike and PJ for best pax time, here are the results:

93 sm 61 Perry Boykin 93 BMW 325is 0:34.221 *0.845 0:28.916
100 es 367 Dustin Pike 98 BMW Z3 1.9 0:36.043 *0.806 0:29.050
102 tdsp 8 Mike Sullivan 89 BMW 325i 0:35.183 *0.826000 0:29.061

This is the PAX for our comp. runs. Your multipliers are shown, so figure out the PAX for your fun run and post it up:

Mine: 35.2 * 0.806 = 28.3712

PJ325i

33.7 * 0.845 = 28.4765

Comp. Run = PJ > Dustin

Fun Run = Dustin > PJ

Dustin still = teh suck :)

Good improvement, Dustin . . . I know Mr. Byrd showed and gave you some good pointers. You really smoothed out the course during the fun runs :buttrock

Mike put down a SMOKIN time for his last run!! The E30 is one of those stay off the brakes cars.

8ball needs nothing :D

PJ needs lighter e36, mo tire (255s all da way . . .yo), and V8 :evil2 . . . All will be solved soon . . .

Speaking of which . . .I'm getting some used (read 4/32") Toyo RA1s for the spare 15s I have . . . .let's see if that helps :)

IF that doesn't work . . . we need to find a BIG wrench to tighten the nut behind the wheel

They dont make wrenches that big.......And if they did, it would require 1249134791834719374193418756145017390438790478123 ft/lb of torque to tighten. :devillook

Yep, missed being there. Had a problem with my house saturday night which knocked me out of going. Plan to make it to several of the events this year. I'm a gear head and enjoy fellowship with other gear heads, and the autox is fun and very challenging way to get my car fix. Later in the year I may buy an e30 or e36 to mess with, mod and autox.

I'll probably see you all in Florence?

I was at the MB race last year and it was kinda cool in that there were only 30 entries (or something close) and then there was time for plenty of fun runs at $1 a piece, I ended up taking my 6 runs plus 6 fun runs, twas a lot of driving for the day. Since this year the event is a little larger, the autox will probably be bigger, but should still be fun. Unfortunatly I won't be making it :(

Hey Dustin, what happened to the "free" shell? Are you still gonna be needing my wheel? That's my drifting setup ya know. :)

The "Free" shell was going to cost around 200 in gas to tow my trailer to Tenn and the car and trailer back from Tenn.

Fun runs....dont get me started. I ended up running a damn 41.003 in a fun run.

John, in my comp runs, I was 1.8s off 1st place which was a miata on R-Comps. But I ended up slaying his time during a fun run, so I shoulda been faster on street tires than him on R's. The advice you gave me at BMW helped a ton.

I also swapped cars with a Miata driver for fun runs.....our cars are definately 10x harder to handle on course then theirs. I drove the balls of time Miata. And the miata driver was quite shocked to see how much of a different beast the Z3 is.

All in all a great weekend, just mad I couldnt find my zone until my fun runs, though I wont complain.

Why would they let a young person buying a 1.9L Z3 drive a Ferrari?

Because the Z3 was at the Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Maserati dealership in NC. Someone traded the Z3 in on a used Ferrari. So while they were doing the paper work, one of the guys asked if I wanted to drive one. I'd been chatting with this about the car for a month since it was out of state and been up there twice, so they kinda knew me. Guess I got lucky too. :redspot

You miss a shift and over rev the engine, which sometimes causes various parts of your valve train to cone in contact with things they arent supposed to, valves thru pistons, etc. bad and costly

$$$shift is more related to the e36 body style. Mainly because of poor shifting techniques and spongy tranny mounts. UUC TMEs and good shift technique help out a bunch . . . And the fact the Getrag and ZF in the E36 does NOT have a reverse or first gear lock out like the old Getrag trannies . . .

BMW didnt design the tranny....they just chose trannies without the lockouts... Proper shift techniques removes the needs for the lockouts.

Honestly....I would vote for you to get a stage 1 VAC motorsports head....give you a little more power. :devillook

Dustin, email or pm me a link for those eccentric bushings. I can't find the company on the web via google. I'm getting ready to order all those bushings and probably get a compressor and some air tools and start dissasembly after the race. I figure I have a month to figure out to put it all back together.

PJ has a compressor and air tools Im sure he can let you snag if he has no need for it.

Here is a LINK (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=192026) to the KMACs.

Here is a LINK (http://e30m3performance.com/tech_articles/susp-tech/ecc_bush/ecc_bush.htm) to a good article about how to set them, and what can be obtained.

kmacs move and go out of spec, espically with aggressive driving on anything bumpy (south carolina roads), go with rtrs, or one of Irelands kits they sell, much easier on the wallet and better in the long run imo.

ps. if you are doing all the bushings, plan on using a propane torch if you havent already, cheating will save you so much time

The new KMAC design doesnt move or shift. I know of a few people who have been running them for about a year with no supension changes, and thats even with some track use. Its all about torquing them down and checking them occassionally.

Besides, he cant go with the IE kit, because its a weld on kit. Not sure about the RTRS....got a link?

For the prce tho, I just do think it's worthwhile. Next year I plan to be a mod of sometype anyway and the IE's are definately cheaper. I may just replace all the bushings with Eurethane and be done with it. Next year I may do the adjustable but it doesn't seem worth it for this season.

What 3 BMW's aint enough? I haven't bought it yet but I know the specific car well. Ellen already said no because she wants something different (another BMW), but we will see. I'd prefer to sell it to someone else if you know anyone. It's a 1992 1.6l with every engine bolt on available and nice suspension setup. It's not a speed queen but it's a great handling miata and everything on it works.

Hey, Dustin!

I just posted this in another thread, but you may want to check it out.

Here's a link to a CCR Forum post.

Freebie wheels with Hoosier (http://ccrscca.proboards51.com/index.cgi?board=bst&action=display&thread=1146839165&page=1#1146839165)

I think this is Derek Ketchie, and if the tires aren't corded, you can still get an event or 2 out of them.

Derek was CCR DSP Champ in 2004. If it's him, these are probably style 10 BMW wheels which will fit a Z3 nicely, and lightweight too. (225/45/15 on top of that!! the perfect size)

Worn Hoosiers is better than Street tires, and your times are close enough to Miller (Miata) you could run with him right now.

I assume you havent had much motor work done. Knife edging and balancing and headwork = $$. And I wouldnt cut corners on those portions either. Find a well known motor specialist and spend the money. Its worth it in the end to have a properly built head, than to drop a valve because someone didnt seat the valve properly or something stupid like that.

Truck/Camaro work is far less complicated than a BMW. Domestic cars always seem to be cheaper to work on. Why? I have no idea.

As far as finding a shop that has done BMW....that shouldnt be an issue. If you are getting the crank knife edged and bullnosed...anyone who does anykind of crank should be able to handle that. And depending on the headwork, most any shop can do it. Nothing is special about port and polishes as far as heads being different. Its pretty much the same concept from head to head.

How much machine work are we talking? I know he does headwork at his shop (house).

Example:. A good S52 puts out about 210-220rwhp and about same amount of rwtq . . . NonVanos M50 bored and stroked to 3.2, port work on a S50 head, 11:1 cr, stock cams, raw tune, no bolts ons = 250rwhp and 225rwtq. Now if my math is right . . . @ 15-17% drivetrain loss. . . that's about 300 crank hp . . . not too shabby . . .

People think its something special to a BMW crank, but its the same concept as a ford or chevy crank. But for some reason, people think they can get more for it, and its something you just have to accept. Just make sure whatever shop you choose, they are someone who does good work and stands behind it.

Any M5'ers in the charleston area? I picked up my 1990 Euro M5 a few weeks ago and was thinking about a get together. I also have some issues with suspension that I'd like to get feedback on if someone wanted to take a drive with me...

yeah, musta been a hiccup on the server....

as an aside, does anyone have a trustworthy mechanic that they would take a car sucha s an m3 or m5 to? I've been to exclusively bimmers, but not sure they are up to the M on my car, as they put the standard 5w30 in at the last oil change, since it's "in the book."

A few of us use Imports Only in Columbia, SC. They have been working on BMW's for a long time. They regularly work on M's especially the year range you have now.

Carl Troy at Euro Road and Race in Charleston is the best. He's in North Charleston.

Autometrics is a good shop, but they are much more biased to porsche. They're in W Ashely.

Please don't go to Rick Hendrick BMW for anything. Their prices on parts are literaly stupid. They quoted me $450 for an interior piece of plastic that LISTS at 275 on real oem. They offered to do me a real favor and let me have it for just over $300. I found it used for $40.

Auto enthusiasts in Chas are lacking in general in my experience, BMW or otherwise. I've seen two e39 M5's in chas, one of which appears to live in MountP (I lived there last yr). It's black, has a car seat in the back, and enough brake dust that the wheels are now color matched to the paint. I seriously don't think it's ever been washed. Ever. Hope it's not yours!!

There's also a white e39 M5 I've seen in W Ashley a couple of times. Never have seen an earlier M5 in chas. Friend of mine here has an M6.

In my experience, auto enthusiasts were more numerous and much more active in NC where I lived before Chas. I've been pretty dissapointed...

I'll probably be heading up to the mountains Monday and Tuesday to do some finishing work on the house, so hopefully it won't be too much longer till she's habitable. Then, if anyone's interested, we can make a mountain run, which would be far more fun than any video game or autox.

I think JByrd got first, I got first, not sure about Don I think one of the RX-7's fell into his class because I didn't hear his name called but saw RX-7's getting trophied. Zack got 2nd in DSP ahead of Jay!!!! GO ZACK!!!!!! Olin broke a gearbox. Jay got 3rd in DSP. I think Chris got 3rd in GS behind Theresa and one of the mini's. All around fair day. Not a BMW fantastic day for sure but we faired alright. I plowed around the track all day. Obviously I need different pressures in those Azenis on 100+ degree days because they act a bit different unless I've just worn them out already which I doubt. I didn't have the heart to stick around for fun runs to play with pressure to find out why. My new rims should be here at the end of the month. If I'm lucky I'll have everything mounted and ready for Orangeburg. You still gonna buy that fender roller from me after I'm done with it?

My advice truthfully?

Get up early on the 19th. Move your shit in and book it to O'burg and come ride with a few of us. Just sit there and watch how we drive, where we look, our hand positions and so forth.

If not, read this: Solo Novice Handbook (http://www.mainstreet-data.com/dickens/solo2%20handbook.htm)

Some of the stuff are outdated, but the driving tips and how the functions work are spot on and give great advice.

I'm going down to USC in a few weeks and will have my car kept in the Bull St garage. I was wondering if there is lots of problems with cars being broken into, etc. and anything else I should know. Thanks.

You moving into USC dorms or just coming to visit?

Bull St. Garage is pretty safe. There is ALWAYS a rare chance someone could get in, but thats a chance anywhere downtown.

I'll be moving into USC, Mcbryde to be specific. I'd definitely like to meet some bmw people once I'm down there.

Nothing you really need to do to your car except top off all the fluids, make sure you have no leaks and get something red to go over your positive battery terminal (our region tends to be strict about that rule). A nice tire pressure gauge is a beutiful thing to have instead of to borrow as I do. :( I should have my own this race. Everything else you can get at the track, knowledge included. I'm gonna have to scan the srticle from Sport Compact Car that got me interested in this so long ago. It has really good pictures and explanations of driving lines and course reading. I'll try to find a way to get that up online. Look forward to seeing you out there. As Dustin said, show up at the O'burg event even if you're late and ride with some of us to get your feet wet.
