Sweet!!! News of the Week!

Some agencies, including Utah Highway Patrol, West Valley City and Taylorsville, say their policies are working well and they are not changing to a "violent felonies only" pursuit policy. But some larger cities are too making the change, including the capitol of the high-speed chase, Los Angeles
Just stay away from the Freeway and these other places... Bastards.

So, can police take a picture of the license plate instead and nail the owner of the car that way? That's the way it works in Germany; very effective by the way.

There is nothing to run away from and there is nothing to chase. They take your picture or tape you on video and you pay, collect points, yadayadayada...

Last I heard, Photo-Cop was could not be used in Places other than school zones and other high risk areas, but they don't really use it.

I don't know if maybe they will change this law? :dunno

41-6-52.5. Photo radar -- Restrictions on use.

(1) "Photo radar" means a device used primarily for highway speed limit enforcement substantially consisting of a low power doppler radar unit and camera mounted in or on a vehicle, which automatically produces a photograph of a vehicle traveling in excess of the legal speed limit, with the vehicle's speed, the date, time of day, and location of the violation printed on the photograph.
(2) Photo radar may not be used except:
(a) (i) in school zones; or
(ii) in other areas that have a posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less;
(b) when a peace officer is present with the photo radar unit;
(c) when signs are posted on the highway providing notice to a motorist that photo radar may be used;
(d) when use of photo radar by a local authority is approved by the local authority's governing body; and
(e) when the citation is accompanied by the photograph produced by photo radar.

Hmmm. Mixed feelings on this one for sometime. If cops stop chasing, it will send a message (as it did in SLC as they have held this policy for some years) that people can get away with things. Like the title of this thread.

But, I can understand the dangers too.

My bro-in-law lost a very nice 633i due to a high-speed chase through his neighborhood in the wee hours of the morning. It was broadsided by the crooks. Sadly, he had just cancelled his comprehensive insurance the week before -- total loss.

And the perp hit it or the copper?

I had a 633i once, loved that car.

If I'm racing on the freeway and I see blue and reds, I'm staying on it. wait.... UHP is still gonna chase. :mad

Dude, the freeway is the worst place to do that. Unless you are near the spagetti bowl. :)

"crooks" = perp

there were two of them, who ran off on foot after totalling the BMW. The K9 unit found one hiding in a neighbor's window well within the hour. I'm not sure what became of the other.

depends on how fast you are already going before he sees you and if he is stopped or rolling. If I blow by a stopped cop at 120+ Im staying on it.

I was tempted once. I went by a UHP in an Impala (I think). He was not yet moving and I just hit 104 and was shifting into fourth. Cam tells me that the Impala's top speed is 111. I've since thought that had I just kept the pedal to the metal, he wouldn't have had a chance. I could have taken any one of about five exits in the next mile, killed my lights (it was dark) and slowed the car solely by downshifting. As I say, I've thought of it but don't have the cajones to try it.

Curious if anyone has done that an got away with it (or not).

One time it was late 3 or 4 am flew by a cop in a parking lot I was doing 30-40 over Said oh sh*t before he pulled out I had ducked off into a neighborhood (then soon realized it was a no outlet one ) when down a one of the streets pulled into some ones driveway that had one of those HUGE trash can ( the home was under construction) pulled behind it and shut the car off. A few mins later he drove by didnt see me... me and the freind I was with sat in my car for 2 hours... finally at 5:30 ish left as I pulled out to the main round I think but still not sure.. looked like him pulling back out of that same parking lot. I booked it home 2-3 blocsk away. Then got grounded for being out all night I had just got my car and been driving for 2 weeks.

Although not very proud of it, I have sucessfully outrun/outsmarted the cops 5 times. I also got caught once after a short pursuit (the only time I wasnt in a Bmw :mad ) The most recent was 2 weeks ago coming up from CA. I was on the 15 going through victorville and there were alot of cars in the #3 lane but 1&2 were wide open. I was pacing a H2 hummer and we were doing about 110 when I saw a CHP on the shoulder pointing his radar right at me. while he was waiting to merge with traffic, I floored it and GOT OUT. I decided an early In-n-out lunch at the next exit was a good idea.
Same trip from vegas to Fillmore I stayed behind a guy in a Maxima. We stayed at about 120 the whole way. I trailed him by about 1/4mile so that when UHP got him, I would be able to see it happen and slow down in time :buttrock

*edit* even my 1.8 has a higher top end than 95% of the patrol cars
