I got a blinker ticket out there one time late at night. I used my blinker but he said it wasn't long enough. :dunno

The prosecutor threw it out when I went to court. Thanks for wasting my time WVC. :rolleyes

I have absolutely no respect for street level cops in UT. Unfortunately, the low crime rate shifts the focus of law enforcement into dubious areas. A newby fresh off a mission looking pig gave me a bogus tic b/c he creeped up to my blind spot after I checked over my shoulder and signaled. I saw him out of the corner of the side mirror (thankfully I have them turned way out to reduce blind spot) and avoided a collision. The B**** had to have another officer site me cause I called him up on driving w/out lights. I still need to file a complaint on his ass. As far as I'm concerned they can all rot in hell. :mad

click-it or ticket...

I got a no-seat belt ticket from a damn South Jordan cop. how lame is that?

me: "why are you giving me a ticket for no seat belt?"

cop: "because it's the law."

me: "but WHY is it the law?"

cop: "because you could get killed."

me: "but couldn't i get killed by smoking a cigarette? why isn't that against the law? why aren't you writing tickets to all the people smoking, who are killing themselves? my decision affects no one but me, and i'm an adult and aware of the consequences."

(dirty look from cop)

me: "are you gay?"

cop: "have a better day. wear your seatbelt."

That's funny!^^

You know which city's cops are the coolest? Logans.

I was up there this last weekend again and got pulled over doing 38 in a 25 (on a very wide 3 lane road!). It could be the single most positive experience I've ever had with a police officer. He politely informed me that most people mistake this for a 35 mph road, and that since I wasn't from Logan, he'd let me go with a warning. Then he talked to me about my car for a little bit. It was very cool.

Highway patrolmen on the other hand....

What distinguishes good cops from mediocre cops is their use of discretion in enforcing the law. Good cops (like good lawyers) know when the law should be enforced and when it would be better off to just let it go. Those without significant experience are still learning this lesson. Once a cop develops a good understanding of the policies behind the law, he becomes much more effective. Sadly, most of the inexperienced cops are doing traffic. The good ones get promoted to other jobs.

I think the best policy is always to show respect and cooperation. Because cops are also human, if you tick them off they will look for a reason to cite you.

OH BOY, HOW MUCH DO I LOVE THE COP BASHING THREADS. :D

Ok, first off, let's take a GEOGRAPHY lesson:

"Seventeen-year-old Cory Warren was stopped by Salt Lake City's finest around midnight April 19 near California Avenue and Redwood Road"

Two points one could note: 1) "Salt Lake City's Finest", and 2) "California & Redwood". Not West Valley City. This is a SLCPD deal.

Now, I am not condoning the officer's actions. In my 10 years, I have never heard of this type of stop. I will give him an "A" for getting crafty though. Is it by law a violation? You bet it is. And if there was reason to believe maybe the subject was involved in sometime of criminal activity, this would be a valid stop to have a chat with him and see if he checks out ok.

As you know, some of the largest drug busts, or criminal apprehensions, are made simply on traffic infractions.

I will say however, that if it was a member of the T.E. (traffic enforcement) squad, the chance that stop was merely a traffic stop is probably great. I agree with Chas completely and will further add that it certainly takes a certain mentality, or breed, to be a traffic enforcement officer. (something I have NEVER had the desire or itch to do). Many cops I know often joke that yes indeed, there is no gray with them, it is only black and white and they would give their own mother a coupon.

One other small little point I wish to make and then I will get back to my glazed donut :rolleyes would be this, having multiple air fresheners in your vehicle has been noted in past large-scale drug bust cases to have been present. Drug transporters do this to mask the scent of narcotics from both the officer, and/or canine. It's not a entire piece of the probable cause pie, but is certainly a slice.

I recall hearing about a city that decided to give "good citizen citations" to good drivers in an effort to focus on the positive instead of the negative. Among the good drivers out there are those who have just committed a crime and are trying to avoid attention from the law. Thus, this little program turned up some unexpected benefits.

I was hoping that Johnny would weigh in on this issue. There is always so much more to a story than initially meets the eye. It's interesting to read a newspaper account about something you really know, and you realize how misinformed and half-baked most of the stories in the media really are.

Oh this is so very true. It's really sad it is the media we get our information from, but yes, where else would it come from.

I giggle when there's a news story that airs that I have been directly involved in. 90% of the time, they air skewed or flat out wrong facts about my (or our agencies) case.

It would be interesting to know just how many air freshners we are talking about though. :D

Summit county rangers are the biggest dicks ever. My buddy got a $250 ticket for not puting out a fire that was never started. But he proved it in court.

It depends on what car it is. The newer CV's are a ton better than the older ones like the POS I have. I will say any BMW is far superior than any police package. Higher speeds in the CV scares the Baby Ruth right outta me. Vibrates, rattles, shifts, whistles, farts, and belches.

My recent experience with the police. I'm driving to work, minding my own business heading up the hill to the U (Merrill Eng. building) . There is an officer in the right hand lane one car length behind me I'm in the left. Go through the last light up towards where you have to turn left past the bus stop and some geezer is heading down the hill (obviously making a right hand around the corner) only he crosses the double yellow line and keeps coming down the hill in my lane. And I'm not talking he was slightly over the double yellow. I mean his entire car was in my lane. I'm on my brakes and honking my horn. I can't get into the right lane cuz there are cars there. The geezer finally gives me a dirty/quizzical look and stops playing chicken moving back into his proper lane when we are about 30' apart. The cop....does nothing.

I guess it is far more dangerous to go a few mph over the speed limit than to EFFING DRIVE THE WRONG WAY DOWN THE ROAD. :mad :mad :mad

This is what pisses me off more than anything. What the hell is up with giving tickets for "wheels failed to come to a complete stop" or going 5 mph over the speed limit, but Suzy Q can be on her cell phone weaving through lanes or old-timers can be driving into opposing traffic and nothing gets done even when the cop is effing right there.

Don't even get me started on real crimes like theft or stabbings where nothing ever gets done. :mad :mad :mad

Well unfortunately, these are laws. They were not created by the police, only enforced by them. There are reasons why laws are put in the books, sometimes the reasons are weak, I agree. Yes, maybe it upsets you to take that extra moment to complete stop, but that's what the laws say, so I suppose that is what we have to do. Trust me, I don't agree with all them too, but expect to be stopped if they are violated.

I suppose I could chime in an vent about all the idiot people in the world that are obvlious about the world we live in these days, then criticize the police for not doing their job when they were in a neglectful state to begin with. The people that leave their vehicles running unattended, or better yet with children in them, or leave their homes unlocked or property out in the open. No, I understand they are not doing anything wrong and it is the theives doing the crimes, but there is such a thing as providing an opportunity.

Lastly, "nothing gets done" are pretty strong words. Maybe I am being a little sensitive here, but I can attest there is a lot that gets done and people off the streets due to work being completed thoroughly. At times, it is extremely frusterating to deal with our judicial system, when you know a perpatrator has committed a crime and yet you cannot have a successfull prosecution in court. There are many factors that make this up.

The ONLY other thing that angers me more than anything is when people catagorize you as all of them. Cops are in a position of extreme scrutiny ALL of the time. No matter what one does, says, someone will balk about it period. There are shitty cops in this world just as their are shitty attorneys, judges, mechanics, hamburger flippers, etc.

Well unfortunately, these are laws. They were not created by the police, only enforced by them.

My point was meant to be simple. Going 5 mph over the speed limit is against the law. So is driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. When police enforce the former and not the latter there is a problem. Especially when true crimes are not dealt with while "civil infractions" seem to have no shortage of man-power.
