View Full Version : A survey: what's the best color for my 6er
jklnhyde 06-06-2005, 04:01 PM I love my 635 even though I'm not thrilled about it's paint color, metallic burgundy. It plain smokes when I take it out on weekends (18" Alpinas, lowered, front/rear spoilers, throaty exhaust, tinted lenses), but that paint color is killing me!!
The PO repainted it and the shop did a very good job, but I'm still considering dissassembly, stripping it bare and giving it a new shade. The cheapest route would be to leave it alone, but what fun is that??!!
So here are my two picks so far; one of the new copper/burnt orange colors like Nissan/Mazda/Pontiac/Dodge has, or an in-your-face blue (Viper blue, BMW Estoril blue, mid-90's Porsche Signal Blue).
Since most 6er's are painted basic colors, if anybody has seen or has pix of one in a different shade than usual, let's see it!
Thanx for all input!
dm635 06-06-2005, 04:25 PM i personally like the burgandy.i had a red one,but that was too much for me and i got a white one.we could trade, but there would be a lot of swapping from car to car.mines pretty much stock with a 5sp. and a recent paint with a little rust underneath.
Al Canuck 06-06-2005, 05:11 PM I love my Burgundrot 6er. Great colour, and when nice and clean, it turns heads. Having said that, my 630 is going to be super inky dark black. I want it so black, that you can barely see it on a sunny day. Chrome euro bumpers on it, with a dark red interior. Another great colour on a 6er would be Calypso red from the newer BMW's.
Personally, I think those burnt orange colours, and wacky blue will go out of fashion very soon. Anyone remember all the teal green cars in the early 90's? The 6 is a classic car, and looks best in classic colours. Paint it burnt orange, and in 5 years, you'll ask yourself what you were thinking?!?!?!
Al
Ol'6erGuy 06-06-2005, 05:18 PM I agree with Al. The 6er is a classic car. I would consider a red to be the flashiest color I would paint it. In my opinion, it needs to be a conservative color, not flashey. Mine is Brasilbraun-metallic, I don't know if I have seen another that color. Bill
TVRPaul 06-07-2005, 04:48 AM My vote goes with Mr Hyde!
I'm going to change the colour of mine even though it doesn't need it, some days I look at it and think it's too much work, stripping down etc. But you could end up with a very distinct car if you get the colour right.
I also thought a bright blue with either gold alpinas, or something in chrome would look the business.
Choosing the colour for me at the moment is a nightmare, I think lighter colours show off the cars lines (white is one of my favourites, but it doesn't have that WOW factor), I've had to repair some work on the nose and I took this opportunity to experiment/paint it another colour - I picked a BMW colour Bermuda Blue Mica - which looks dark blue with a purple in it on a normal day, but when the sun shines it's brighter mid-blue with a sparkle!
If the weathers good I will take some pics tonight, another colour I wanted for a while was a British Racing Green with a black fleck(?) in it and currently I have seen a Blood Red on a new MG that is stunning.
kursed56 06-07-2005, 10:05 AM Im with the other guys, keep the classic colors. But you have to make yourself happy, do what you want. Ive always liked the BMW Imola Red, deep blood red. And I think a really bright silver would be cool too. Heres a thought, an idea and something I was thinking about but instead of a complete color change what about a two tone? Maybe your burbandy with black on top or maybe a nice silver on the bottom half? Heres a quick photoshop image I did on my car. Just a thought, kick'n around some ideas.
Let me know, I can do some quick photoshop work if you want to see some different colors on your car. Todd
kursed56 06-07-2005, 11:20 AM Heres another view
Ol'6erGuy 06-07-2005, 09:06 PM Two tone... now there's an idea. I don't know how it would look on a 6, but I have a '97 M3 that is teckno-violet metallic. It may sound a little funky, but at the right angle, it looks blue and in bim light it looks black. Just another idea. Bill
jklnhyde 06-08-2005, 09:57 AM kursed56, that is one cool looking photo-effect! Your 6er is smooth...I might have to invest in some software to get a better idea of what it will look like. Can you do a electric blue and a burnt orange/copper one for all to see??
jcsomerset 06-08-2005, 05:05 PM I have to agree that the classic colors look the best and preserve value the best.
If I had a choice to paint my M any color I wanted - I'd probably go with the old Polaris Silver - my first E28 was that color and I loved it (still miss the car)
new colors - there's a guy in California that has an Estoril Blue 6er - and I must admit - It looks pretty hot....
kursed56 06-08-2005, 06:04 PM Thanks for the kind words. Ill see if I have time tonight to put together a couple color ideas for you.
I too like the Estoril Blue, thats kinda cool.
Cacatfish 06-08-2005, 11:04 PM I had a Euro sixer painted Avus blue. Looked pretty sweet but I would definitely go with a color that came stock with a six.
I vote for the classic black metallic, silver or maybe one of the older original colors like Sienna braun Brasil braun, or to be really wild, how about Taiga green?
kursed56 06-08-2005, 11:35 PM jklnhyde, is this what you had in mind? Let me know, I can do some others for you too. No problem.
TVRPaul 06-09-2005, 05:58 AM Kursed
All blue pic please, then another (different blue??)with those alloys in gold. If it's not to much trouble
jklnhyde 06-09-2005, 08:26 AM kursed56, not bad, not bad at all! I like the copper/orange shades best as far as I can tell. :buttrock Now I'm starting to think back to another 86' 635 I had that was a factory medium blue; I wasn't too thrilled about that color either, but the copper/orange color looks better than I thought it would.
If I'm not mistaken, BMW did offer a similar (?) copper color for European model 6er's. I test drove a Euro 633 in L.A. about 15 years ago and the color was what I remember to be a dull, orangy copper. I also remember how awfully SLOW it was! It was automatic and all the guages and words inside the car were in german. Too bad it was so beat up-I would have bought it...
Ol'6erGuy 06-09-2005, 11:48 PM This is Brasilbraun metallic in case you are interested. Don't look at the wheels they were on the car when I bought it. :drink1
kursed56 06-10-2005, 07:32 AM Heres one I like, maybe the old BMW Citrus Green with some dark wheels.
kursed56 06-10-2005, 07:34 AM Heres a funky blue with gold wheels
kursed56 06-10-2005, 07:36 AM Copper/burnt orange color
funkmasta 06-12-2005, 12:10 PM I am a fan of black... but thats just me. What color is your interior? that could make or break a color.
If you are going to do some sort of custom color, I vote E46/E38/E39 titanium silver
jcsomerset 06-12-2005, 06:02 PM silver is my favorite color on a car - (A Polaris E28 528e was my first bimmer ever)
TVRPaul 06-26-2005, 05:48 AM Yep
That's want I want, there is a guy over here that has replaced the engine in my neighbours '67 camaro and I went to visit him, he was painting a late 'vette in Red Bull Blue and it's beautiful - so I'm just building up my new compressor (it's old really but new to me - converting the 3ph motor to single ph) and I will have a go with Red Bull Blue on the wing I've prep'ed.
Will post pics within next couple of weeks!!
