I saw this question on http://www.bmw540ifun.com/FAQ.htm
Q) What size wheels and tires can I put on my car?
The answer for 19s were:
A) For 19" Wheels: 245s in the front and 275s will rub, you will need to get the fender lips rolled and need to get M5 wheel liners.
Is this true, I have seen so many here have 19s on thier 540 but never heard them complain about rubbing.
I have a 01 blk 540i and are considering 19s but don't know about this rubbing deal. Is it something I should be worried about ?

you just have to have the correct offset for the wheels so they don't rub - I just did a set of wheels for a guy with a 528i 19x9.5 all around with 265/30/19 all around!

wheelsDirect - i like your set up what size wheels and tires are you running on? What type are they? Also did you lower it?
I am in the market for new wheels and tires. but still doing more research. I have a 2001 540i sport suspension package and i'm set into running 19 inch wheels. Just doing more research to make sure that i wont rub at all, (with and without people riding in the back seats)
thanks

that seems pretty high for a 5er. isn't that more of a 3er offset?

You main problem with fitting 275's to the rear will come down to wheel offset and square/round tire sidewall. I think my 19x10 rear wheels have an offset of 19-20mm which did not work with a 275 square sidewall Kuhmo 712 tire. I installed M5 fender liners and had a local body shop use a porta power tool to push the fenders out some to gain some more room. This did the trick. The last time I purchased tires I went with a more round sidewall Michelin Pilot PS2 and everything is great (I probably could have used the 275 since the sidewall is more round, but I wanted to play it safe).
Bottom line is put 265's on your car and be done with it, unless you HAVE to have the 275

This has been my experience also, I have 19x10 on the rear with +24 offset running 275/30 S03's and lowered with KW V2 coilovers. I had to install M5 fender liners and roll the fenders to eliminate almost all the rubbing on the rears. I also have a small sub box w/ one 10" and a big 5 channel amp residing in the trunk. My rear shocks are setup only half a turn from full soft. I still rub the rears on occasion when going thru quick depressions on the road/freeway or when car is carrying 3+ people, so I'll prob have an autobody shop push out my fenders a little to get full clearance. In my case, I HAD to have the 10" rear and 275 tire and was willing to go thru with the cost and hassles of dealing with the rubbing. If I didn't want to mess with all of this rubbing prevention, etc., I would have run a 9.5" rear with 265 tire. 265 on 10" is a little too stretched for my taste and gives no rim protection, although with 275 does not give a whole hell of a lot either (ask me how I know this... :mad ).
There are many variables to consider whether a certain setup will rub or not. GENERALLY SPEAKING, running 275 on rear, assuming proper offset and no other extraordinary situations, WILL RUB with aftermarket and most likely OEM Sport suspension. OEM non Sport setup should be fine.
265 tire on rear (making same assumptions above) should not rub on OEM Sport and aftermarket suspension.
