View Full Version : Rough Idle when cold, idle almost dies if I touch Gas!

Hi, when my car is cold ( first time I crank it up for the day no matter what temp outside). My car idles very roughly. Almost like it is going to die. I try touching the gas, and the idle sometimes goes even lower, but then eventually comes back up. Could this be caused by leaky injectors or probably just the ICV? It is perfectly fine after it is warmed up. Also, my car never goes up to 1000 or 1200 like I read about others doing when it is cold outside. It is almost always around 600-800 wether it is warming up or not. Thank you

I would start by checking the DME fault memory.

the IAC gets cloged up... check for vacuum leaks. I had a cracked carbon canisotr that would cause a intermitant idle problem.

What exactly is the IAC? And how would one check for vacuum leaks?

unplug the idle valve and see if its working, if it is ur rpm will rise. if not, 1st check for power. then so on

sick car.

Where is the ICV located?

vacumm leak for sure. if its icv, it would be fine when u gave it throttle, not almost die, would it not

Vacuum leak where? I have this symptom too and now I'm wondering if it has to do with my computer continually throwing a code for evap valve stuck closed - even after the valve, the cannister, and the sensor have all been replaced.

I have the same issue or similar. (1999 M3) Morning completely cold engine...starts up fine....idles rough for a minute or so....if I touch the gas lightly will potentially die or get rougher.....idle steadies out after the ~1 minute....runs fine. More annoying than anything else, but would like to fix it. Open to suggestions?

M3maker, unfortunately my daily driver died and I've been running the M3 to work and haven't had a chance to poke my head under the hood. From the posts above the ICV is under the intake manafold and can be removed to test if it is good ("unplug the idle valve and see if its working, if it is ur rpm will rise. if not, 1st check for power. then so on"). Did you try this? If so, did it proove the ICV to be bad? Where was your leak? Did you just use carb/brake cleaner to spray around looking for it? What does the ICV look like? Thanks!
