I just picked up a new pair of DLS reference R4 components. I was toying around with spacers to mount them in the door under the factory grill as I have seen others do with different 4" speakers. My magnet is bigger than anyone else's I have seen pictures of and will be a very tight fit. Has anyone ever put these or other 4 inchers with big magnets in their e36 door? I have a 2 door by the way. Did you mount them centered on the factory opening or did you offset them? Thanks for any help.

I am going to try and tackle this tomorrow, so if anyone has any advice it would be nice.

I spent all of monday making different adapter plates. I finally just gave up. There is just not enough clearance for the magnet. :mad The magnet on the speaker was about 3 1/4 inches wide and the mounting depth was about 2 1/2 inches. I was using 3/8 inch thick board. I think I will mount them on the outside of the door panel and paint the grills tan to match the interior. So if anyone else is ever thinking of doing this, don't bother. :nono
By the way with the right placement you have about 2 1/2 inches of mounting depth available in the e36 2door.

I know, that's what I should have done. I had just seen other people put 4" drivers in their doors. I am not afraid to do custom work, I'm not a newbie in car audio. I just didn't research it enough before I dove in.

I have installed to sets in the doors using similiar mounts to "the solution". I mounted mine on 3/8 mdf also. I have DLS Iridium 6.3 set and it is sooo tight the top clip doesn't always stay clipped on the door.
I am going to be redoing my install again (3rd time in a year) because I want some of my trunk back, and I am going to cut out some of the sheet metal behind the 4" so the magnet can sit in it.

How big are the magnets on your set? The ones on my R4's are much larger than the ones on my dual magnet kenwood excelon 5 1/4's that are in my kicks.
