Hey I am a detailing n00b, and I need some help. I need to detail my 98 323 and my wifes X3. I have some cheap zymol wax that I bought from Target last year. I want to start to use some good products from now on.
What do you recommend I need to get started? I want to try and clay my car and this will be my first time doing so. I guess I need some clay, detail spray for the clay and a good wax. I will also like some of the new microfiber towels and a good wash mitt and anything else I need to wax my 2 cars. I don't need the best but something good you sell thats average or a lot better than my Target Zymol.
Do you guys got some kind of starter kit? Thanks.

Dean,
We have a very wide selection of kits to suit your needs. You might have trouble choosing which one(s) to get because there are so many. :D

Anyhow, I'd recommend the Wolfgang Elastic Poly Clay Kit (http://www.autogeek.net/wg8000.html), which comes with clay, lubricant, and two microfiber towels.
I'm not sure how many towels you'll need, but some waffle weaves will come in handy for drying the car, and for nearly everything else, the Cobra Detailing Towels are my favorite.

Now for wax...
Do you prefer a synthetic, or carnauba wax?
For carnauba waxes, two I would recommend are P21S (http://www.autogeek.net/p2concarwax.html) and Pinnacle Signature Series (http://www.autogeek.net/pisisepawax.html).
For a synthetic wax/sealant, I would recommend DP Premium Surface Shield (http://www.autogeek.net/dp525.html) or Mothers Reflections Advanced Car Wax (http://www.autogeek.net/mo10016.html) (which can be topped with Top Coat (http://www.autogeek.net/mo10116.html) for more shine and protection).
Hope this helps! :)

Hey thanks for the info. As far as the waxes goes, I have no idea which I prefer. I don't know crap about waxes and which is better than the other. How about you tell me in your opinion what you think is the best:carnuba or synthetic? Whatever is the easiest to apply or whichever gives the best shine. When I wax my car it's ok to do it by hand or do you recommend I get a orbital machine? Do I need a polish of some kind or is the clay and wax above good enough. My car is old so I got swirl marks.
What kind is the retail store Zymol?
Oh and is it safe or o.k. to clay my wife's new 2004 X3? Should claying be used for really old or bad paint?
I forgot to ask can you wash these microfiber towels or are you suppose to wash them when you use them every time?

To remove swirls, you will most likely need to use a machine (Porter Cable 7424 at the least). Clay will remove contaminants and make the paint feel smooth, but will not remove any defects/marring.
If you invest in a 7424, you will want to wash, clay, polish, then wax.
Retail Zymol is just an average liquid carnauba cleaner wax.
As far as claying, you can clay new or old paint, as long as it's not oxidized.
To wax, you can do it by hand. You can get a more even, thin layer with a machine, but doing it by hand will work just fine.
I would personally stick with a carnauba wax on your dark paint. Carnauba waxes tend to give a richer, wetter shine than synthetics, although synthetics do last longer in most situations.
I'm not sure what you're asking about the towels...wash them when they get dirty/after each use on gentle/slow. You can tumble dry or hang them, but do not use any heat.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! :)

Thanks for the reply. Last question. After you do the whole wash, clay, polish, and wax route, do you have to remove all of this stuff off the car in 6mnths before you repeat the process again?
If I was to use the Pinnacle wax you recommended is the Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion something I need to get as well? I saw it said it can be used my hand. Thanks.

It's hard to say how often you should clay. It will be different for every car, depending on the environment, how often the car is cleaned, etc.
After washing the car, put your hand in a clean ziploc bag, and feel the paint gently. If it feels rough, you need to clay.
You should use a paint cleaner every 6 months to remove old wax/sealant before reapplying.
On my garage queen, it's been 1 year and 2 months since I last clayed, and it still doesn't need it. On my father's car, it's been 6 months, and it needs to be clayed badly, so this shows how much it can vary.
Also, you shouldn't need to use an abrasive polish more than once per year.
Hope this helps!

Mike@Autogeek 05-31-2005, 03:09 PM Dean,
It's really a matter of personal preference. Klasse will last a little longer than Wolfgang sealant, but it can be a real pain to use. Wolfgang is undoubtedly one of the easiest products you will ever use.

Mike@Autogeek 05-31-2005, 04:04 PM Anytime, Dean. Glad I could help! :)
