It's for my dad, he's large purchase deficient...I pretty much buy everything for him that costs more than a grand.
It's gotta be rear projection and at least 60" wide. HD quality is a bonus but it will not be running an HD signal, it'll be running DirecTV. I have a Samsung DLP which looks great in HD but so-so with a digital signal. I know the Mitsu's were good a few years back, is that still the value play in RPTVs?

Mitsubishi has the best ones out there. They actually use the same projection guns as Hitachi. I have a 57 inch Toshiba. I went with it because of the super deal I got on it.

Where is a good place locally to pick one up? I know that Brandsmart was pretty good in FL but haven't shopped the one in Doraville.
I'll probably pick something up and take it to my dad in Florida.

HiFi Buys has a good selection of Mitsubishi. Or try HHGregg!
Brand Smart in D'Ville sucks. I went in there 2 weeks ago and it smelled soooo bad inside. I was the most foul stench I have ever experienced...and not just in one area. It was the entire store. And every associate working there was bitching about something. None of them were actually doing any work.
Good luck!
I love my Mitsubishi RPTV. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Ok, I gotta ask...If you're going to run DirecTv, why not get papa the HD receiver? That + the $50 antenna from Radio shack gets me a heap-o good HD. With the new birds, they'll have a bunch of the locals in HD in 6-12 months' time. I'm just sayin...
BTW, I'm liking my JVC HD-ILA. It makes the light look right perty. I WILL say that it's not as good as my old Sony was at doing SD though... CRT still rules the SD.

Non-HD on an HD set looks like ass. Be warned.
If he has no plans to go to HD, I'd skip HD. There is not that much HD content out there anyhow, although I rekon that is changing as the seasons roll by.

I did say that the SD programming isn't as good as my old Sony BUT I'd say that a third to a half of what we watch is being shown in HD. Take a look at the network shows that are now available in HD, you might be supprised.

to be ON topic, my HTDV won't fit in my 3. I wonder if it'd fit in an X3...
