View Full Version : transporting track tire & wheel
hotshu 05-24-2005, 03:25 PM I usually just throw a tarp over the back seats & carry my track tires there to an event. To keep the interior clean I may throw a tire store bag over them too. I heard Hpme Depot contractor waste bags are stronger than regular garbage bags. Then I saw these polyester/ballistic nylon "Tire Totes" that Harbor Freight sells for $13/pr. Isnt shipping free with Harbor Freight stuff on the internet? Anyone tried 'em? Worth it? Ad copy says they protect against UV degradation during storage in the off-season too. Do they have zippers? Pic below.

I got some free tire bags for getting top pax as an evo school graduate at a national tour
good for keeping the seats clean or tire goo and gravel
vjlax18 05-24-2005, 03:39 PM BMW sells them now for like $20 a pair IIRC.
B.Watts 05-24-2005, 03:52 PM I believe Bimmerworld sells thes same bags for something like $19 a pair if you want to support a board sponsor.
liuk3 05-24-2005, 04:02 PM I think the tire totes are very functional. Shopping on the internet will yield you good prices. They don't have zippers, rather they work via velcro, and they have been holding my tires pretty well.
CABimmer 05-24-2005, 11:38 PM I got a set of tire totes last year. they are strong, but the clips on the straps all broke in the first couple of uses. They are not made for hauling around tires, just storing them. You can see them in the corner of my garage with another set of track tires in them. I would say they are not worth the money.
I have this now

I have 18 pairs in stock for $18.95 per pair that arrived today. Please contact me at:

325racer 05-25-2005, 01:41 AM If you want some really durable bags that look good and work as a tire warmer check these out. They are a bit of money, but they work very well, and will last much longer than the Tire Tote bags or garbage bags.

I was thinking of lining these totes with aluminized bubble pak to make a quasi tire heat retainer for autox. If I jack the car wheels off the ground, would I be able to slip these on? Just looking for an improvement over the DIY tire heat retainers you see at autox natl tours & the Kansas championship.

Matt have you used these? You think they're worth $225 a set (almost 9x the price of tire totes)?
autophile 05-25-2005, 03:39 PM For actual transporting, check out this product from a Tulsa auto-xer and SCCA member:

I'm sure they could come up with something for bimmers.
325racer 05-25-2005, 03:42 PM I have only used them as tire warmers once. I'm still building my car so I don't have the budget for them currently. That and I live in San Diego and usually have a co-driver, so there really isn't all the much need for them.
I do however, know of quite a few other people that have used them with great success as Tire Warmers. They were used by quite a few people at the San Diego National Tour, but I would expect much better results from them in the northern climates where it's not nearly as warm.
MAB Badgerbimmer 05-25-2005, 06:49 PM Please keep in mind those totes are for tires, won't work with wheels with mounted tires.

Ive seen more then a few people use tire totes on mounted tires so did they change something?
hotshu 05-25-2005, 07:21 PM yea, their ad copy shows mounted wheel with tire. I'm guessing the handles arent strong enough to hold up to the weight of both though. I think I'm going to stick with HD contractor waste bags for storage/transport or use the totes lined with aluminized insulator as tire warmers.

They look very convenient. I was going to get them. However, you'll note by looking at the picture that they are sealed around the inside of the tire. Being unsure of how they worked I called Bimmerworld and asked. They told my they won't work with mounted wheels/tires.
jamesclay 05-26-2005, 11:51 PM Sorry for the misinformation. That is exactly what they are made for - mounted wheels and tires. I have a lot of customers using them for track tires - even heavy stuff like big M5 fitments.

Use coupon "totes" and get free shipping on them - limited to tire totes only, you can't order tire totes and an engine and get free shipping on the whole thing...
