British mag "Autocar" just did a review of an M3 SMG and they thought it was totally awesome. They said it was way better than any similar system currently around, including the one in the Ferrari 360.

In the fastest 'sport' mode it will change gear in 0.08s - twice as quick as the Ferrari. OTOH if you just want to cruise around it will take as long as 0.5s and they said you'd almost think it was a normal auto in this mode.

Other feature I love is "Acceleration Assistant" - put it in first but don't let go of the shift paddle, mash the throttle and it will hold the revs around 3600, let go of the shift paddle and it will do the perfect standing start getaway! Software for this is apparently written by same guys who write the "Launch control" software for the BMW Williams F1 cars.

I am definitely going to hold off replacing my E36 until I can get an E46 SMG! Autocar reckons 60% of British sales will be SMG once people find out how good the system is.

Michael.

I'm waiting fo SMG to come to the US. I think it'll be great. Faster than any human can shift!

I got excited reading about it. The BMW site is a must read for ANY enthusiast!!!
SMG II double clutches on down shifts. Built in progressive shift lights in Tachometer for optimum gear changes!!

BMW needs to make an E46 4 door M3 w/SMG II! I will be first on the list!

I think that SMG is awsome. I am #1 on both coupe and cab, and put off ordering it until SMG comes out. I want to test drive it before ordering.

I am afraid that I might not enjoy it as much. I love having a clutch, throwing the shifter arround, getting busy driving the beast, etc. With SMG everybody will have perfect Heel-Toe :).

Wow, this surprises me. I had no clue the SMG system would be so refined and complelte.
Wasn't the SMG offered on the e-36 a much less perfected system?
MMMM...nothing beats running through the gears though:D
However, an SMG and a manual is an option for the future :D JK (maybe not?!)

Yep. The E36 SMG system wasn't that good. You could change gear more quickly in the normal manual and it was very jerky in town driving. Also, since the E36 didn't have drive-by-wire throttle it couldn't really control the throttle properly to do proper 'blipping' on the downchanges to match engine revs.

BMW really took a lot of heat from the European motor press about it, especially as Ferrari and even Alfa Romeo had much better systems.

Now BMW has turned the tables and made the best clutchless manual out there!

Michael.
