I know BMW parts are expensive compared to like a honda, but what about if I bought an M3? Right now I am driving my dad's old 1987 325is and its nice and all, but I would like to have an M3. I know NOTHING about cars and my dad doesnt live near me anymore, so anyways would it be a bad choice of a car for me? Thank you! - Jenna <3

An E30 M3 is not necessarily a maintenance nightmare, but definitely not the best car to have if you have no experience w/ repairs and maintenance. Problem is that most E30 M3s you will find are all well over 120-150k miles and will need engine rebuilds, steering racks, diffs (input bearing goes bad), new seals, etc. Otherwise, plan to spend $15-16k on a cherry car with tons of reciepts and/or a recent major overhaul of just about everything.

But otherwise I drove an E30 M3 daily for years. The only way I could afford to keep one is that I do literally everything myself.

You seem new...

Well you posted this topic in the E30 M3 forum. I don't know if you meant to. The E30 M3 is the M3 made from 1988-1991. It is the original M3. The E30 is the 3 series chassis, from 1984-1991. You have an E30 325is.

The car isn't exactly a daily driver, it is rather high maintanance and parts are very expensive. Almost double the price of the parts of your current BMW's parts.

E30 M3's are also very expensive to buy and usually need repairs. Only 5,000 were ever brought into the US.

The E30 M3 is basically a race car in disguise. More so than any M3 made after it. It has a high revving Inline 4 engine that needs to be revved high to make power. These M3's also only come in manual. E30 M3's are generally reserved for the heaviest of enthusiasts.

If this doesn't sound like what you want, you might want to look into an E36 M3 which could be found for in nice condition for about $12,000.

This is an E30 M3.

look into an e36, they are good performing cars and if they are taken care of maintenance really isnt a problem. Look for 97-99 m3's for even less possiblity of problems.

e30 m3s parts are ungodly expensive, for the most part anyways. The 15k rule generally applys. If you find a car for 8k, expect to put 7k in repairs, if you find one for 11, 4k in repairs and so on. If there wasnt much engine work done on the car you want, its going to need some. The engines will run forever or as deep as your pockets will go. the P/O on my car in the past 4 years before I got it spent over 12k in repairs and it still had problems.

Id also seond you get an e36, theres way more performence mods, the engine is a lot easier to work on, and parts are a dime a dozen. Also if you go 4 door insurence will be cheaper, and trying to battle with insuence for the value of an e30 m3 is a huuuugeee bitch (in the case that you happen to total it).

Hey, yall :) Are the "e-36" M3's faster or slower then the "e-30" M3's?

The E30 M3 has about 190 Hp. The E36 has about 240. The E36 is a lot faster than the E30 but doesnt handle like a E30.

Yes, the E36 M3 is faster. The E30 M3 is really a hardcore race car for the track. If you want a quick street car you want an E36 M3. If you want a weekend toy and can spend lots of money, get an E30 M3. It's a BMW streetcar in it's most raw level IMO.

*Sticks nose in air* hrumph! ;)

But seriously, the E30 makes for a very fun car to drive. In terms of daily driving, an E36 is a much more refined car. Not that it stops me from making mine my daily driver/track car, it is just part of the fun.

**SMACK**

But you're right. The E30 M3 is "tossable" where the E36 simply has GRIP. The E36 is more refined, heavier, quieter, torquier (is that a word?), and simply faster, especially when compared stock to stock. The E30 M3 is light, nimble, buzzy, temperamental, and really needs to be wrung out to 6-8k RPMs to get the blood flowing.

Comparing them in modded form is really where the fighting begins... :help

yes, definitely go for the e36. e30 is a great car, but you really need to do most of the work yourself or youll go bankrupt. even doing all the work yourself costs quite a bit for parts, etc.

e36 actually handles better for the e30 in my opinion... it feels a lot different though, of course. e30 is more fun to drive for an enthusiast who enjoys and appreciates it. e36 is faster though and more practical.
