View Full Version : A 3.64 rear diff for an E34 540iA
sdwhitney 05-20-2005, 10:33 AM Ok, I finally got it installed, and have had almost a full day of putting it to the test, here is what I find(For slushbox 540i's only):
1. An Immediate feel when you just put into drive. It just feels like it is stalling higher, and it just wants to go. Almost like a feeling that you have to hold the brake a little harder.
2. First Launch - Well, first gear used to feel a little like a Toyota Tercel, now, it has some "Hello, How the hell ya doin!" feel... I still can't spin from a stop, but that might also be the rubber I have( I knew I should have bought some cheap crap...lol).
3. Shifting into 3rd gear, this is hard to imagine for some of you, but it throws my head back now, as if I have a torque converter in there. Shifting into 4th and 5th don't do it, just 3rd. All shifts are a bit harder, but 3rd is alittle crazy..
The best way to describe to an slushbox guy is, you have two ways to drive your 540 - 1. in Auto Drive (economy mode) or 2. Sport (4 or 3). Now, with the new diff, your economy mode is now your Sport 4, and Sport 4 is just really aggressive now.
I was a bit dissapointed when I first drove it, because for some reason I thought it would be more acceleration than I got, but after a donut or two(that I have never been able to do before) and a few launches up to 120, I felt ok about it.
I have never dyno'd my car, so I am going to set up a time to get it dyno'd. Although I know I don;t get more HP out of the diff, I do have the EAT Chip as another mod.
I will be talking to Stu at S&K later today about my next hp mod, I am thinking headers, if I can keep the price low enough, I have to ensure I keep the savings going for the s/c I want to get next year.
by the way, not that anyone on this board is interested, but if you know someone. I am selling my 2.81 diff.....
Whitney...Out
E34nication 05-20-2005, 10:36 AM Congrats on the diff!!! Glad to hear it livened things up a little bit.
Keep us informed abotu the headers... I think Jimmy and I might be interested if the price is right... :devillook
cleoent 05-20-2005, 12:09 PM how many times is your car shifting before 60? That was my main question when you said you were installing that diff. I am also shocked that you can't spin the tires, do you have traction control off? My 540 with the 3.15 will smoke em all day. How big are you rims? Are they replica's? Weight? I have some heavy ass rims and i can still smoke em...

I think it is because Steve has been eating too many donuts instead of doing them. :evil2

makes sense, it could also be that after he had two donuts he weighed more which may have balanced the car better and may have caused it to grip better. I must have misread it the first time because i thought he did the donuts on his car, but know that i've reread it a few times, it's clear that he ate donuts and then did a 120mph run.
jimmyz2 05-20-2005, 01:55 PM I think they were glazed and not powdered.
E34nication 05-20-2005, 01:57 PM I think they were glazed and not powdered.
what evidence do you have to back this claim? I for one presume they were chocolate frosted.
cleoent 05-20-2005, 01:58 PM i see him as more of a rainbrow sprinkle guy to me...
sdwhitney 05-20-2005, 02:06 PM There are obviously 2 things I need to clear up here!
1. I don't like donuts at all, but bagels I am all over .....
2. I think rainbows are pretty, but I am not a rainbow person....
I did actually think about the weight thing(Jimmy has seen me, so his comments are in line), but then the tires as well.
My wheels are M-pars from an E38, I am running the Toyo Ts1 Proxes, 265/35/18 in the rear and I am forgetting what my fronts are? I think 245 or 235/40/18's.
I just can't break the tires loose of the line, but the acceleration since the diff is an amazing change from stock.
Being an Auto, it is not always as easy, haven't tried a brake stand yet...
cleoent 05-20-2005, 02:08 PM your trac control is off right? I can't believe you can't roast em. You must have really grippy cheap tires. I can roast my sp9000's all day long.
cleoent 05-20-2005, 02:09 PM oh yeah, how many shifts between 0-60? Also, i think dinan tranny software is in order.
sdwhitney 05-20-2005, 02:19 PM Damn, I just going to have to go down and check my shift points!
I was actually thinking about the dinan tranny chip, but the place I had mine installed said they could do some work on my tranny that would be better than a chip. Can't do Torque converters on BMW's because the computer will get thrown into failsafe.
I am open to suggestions. Currently on the hunt for Headers.......

wasn't meant to leave you hangin sorry :)
I think the 3.64 is just too much, having to shift 3 x to 60 (especially in auto) is probably more likely to slow you dont just a bit more then it would if you had gone with something like a 3.43. In the 1/4 mile you'll probably have to shift to 4th, maybe even 5th, everytime the auto tranny shifts it a second long or longer procedure. So if you have to shift 3x with a 3.64 but only twice with a 3.43 (1/4 mile) which is actually faster in the auto?
Would be an interesting experiment...

I would be willing to line up with anyone for the fun of it.
Hell, I would line up with Jimmy for the fun of it too.....
Update on Custom Headers
There is a place right here in Rancho Cordova that will custom make headers for the 540, but for over 3k! http://www.midnightperformance.com/home.htm
They also do custom turbo and supercharger applications.....
They told me they could put a twin turbo on the 'White Knight"......
I JUST NEED TO WIN THE LOTTO!!
