2muchpsi 05-20-2005, 01:30 AM Im relatively new to this site, this is actually my first post. Anyways, im looking at buying a 91 e34 M5. I searched the forums for "mods" or "modifications" + e34 M5 and didn't really come up with anything.
I understand the car came with 330hp. I would like to make about 300-330hp to the wheels -- to give you a ballpark for the type of mods im looking for.
Thanks in advance guys, it's a nice site you got goin here!

unesential 05-20-2005, 08:18 AM F/I as this is already a pretty highly tuned motor. There are some gains with chip and cam work available. Stock hp is 314 not 330 RWHP is around 250.

Forget about modding an E34 M5. A chip and some suspension and off you go. To try and get 300+whp from that motor, you would spend double what you would buy the car for. They are already tuned to the gills and dont leave much on the table.
FI would also be an insane amount of money and a completely custom job. You already have high comp, 264 cams and tuned headers. If that doesnt work for you as is, you may want to consider another car.
Drive one first, though! :)

My 535i 5spd and my 540i 6spd did not do it for me.I decided to NOT consider another car,and just mod the sh*t out of them. :)
2muchpsi 05-20-2005, 11:29 PM Wow - thanks guys.
For the record, i had* a GS-T. Which is a FWD. ;)
Anyways, thanks for the info. I am currently waiting to hear about a used car report on an M5 im looking at. Hopefully it will pass, and i'll pick it up in the next week or so. :redspot
I understand simple mods, chip, exhaust, intake. Someone mentioned the M5 has 264 cams? is this true? im relatively unfamiliar with Bimmers and especially natural aspiration (not-turbo :) )
Are there any more "aggressive" modifcations? (ie. supercharger, turbo, more aggressive cams, exhaust manifold, etc.)
Thanks again guys!
josh
ps- what is the offset // bolt pattern for these cars? time to start wheel shopping. TIA :buttrock

Just read that article... interesting. I didn't know the 540i Sport was a V8. Yet, it's performance is BARELY lacking behind the M5. The dinan supercharger boosted power significantly but didn't really imporve performance that much.
402 hp, and only .6 faster in the 1/4? Dont get me wrong, im not a 1/4 whore, but that is just confusing :confused
Well, thanks for the article. I'll look at 540i sports, i have a feeling they could be cheaper. Save some cash! :D
josh :alright

They came with 315 HP stock. Pretty much all you can do while staying NA is a chip, Schrick cams, custom exhaust and high-flow cats. That'll probably get you to near 330 HP at the crank, but would cost you nearly $4000 + install.

it might have been any combination of poor traction, lack of driver skill
weather temp differences etc etc....
anything from a standing start really doesn't measure the car's engien well,
rather it measures its traction and driver throttle manipulation...

It's the trap speed that matters more than the ET. A supecharged 540i will annihilate an M5 in a straight line. They trap around 112 as opposed to about 100 for the M5. The E34 M5 is not a car you would byuy for all out speed unless you are a millionaire. It's a car to buy for the whole package and the intoxicating spirit of the S38 beast.
For comparison, I had an E34 5er with a supercharged and cammed S52 that was making 322whp. My friend's chipped E34 M5 felt lethargic next to it, and a supercharged 540i would handily whoop on my E34 even.
The BMW V8 and big six motors are easy to get insane power out of, which would be hard to replicate in the S38.

I will forgive your 3 posts. :) The Dinan S/C 540iwas rated at over 400hp flywheel. With a few more inventive mods one can easily get 400 RWHP.Dinan also recommended suspension mods with the S/C and therein lies your performance upgrade, and believe me,the performance difference is significant.
