Here are pictures of my New Hella tail lights and the Hella HID low beams+100W H1 high beams.

The problem is that the low beam HID is not what I expected.
As you can see from the pictures, the elipsoid low beams don't light up the road in a nice uniform way: the problem is partially the headlight adjustment(which I will fix), but the projector doesn't do it's job like it's supposed to.

Gamite and Shragon alreday tried to help me with this, and I must thank them again. I did use a spacer to bring the Xenox bulb to the H1 focal point, but there is no difference in before and after!?

More input on this problem?
Thanks
Mihai

What's the difference?
I did that last night, and the 2 headlights are at the same level, with the left headlight a little bit to the left.

So we can get a better idea of how the beam pattern looks. The pattern should be a crisp line that angles upwards.

BTW, how are your 100W high beams holding up? I was scared to use them cuz I had 100w bulbs in my us elipsoids, and it melted them :(

those tails look great with the color of your car!

as for the hid's, yea, that still doesn't look right. i agree with the others, take a pic of the lights shinning against a wall and that will let us know if your pattern is correct or not.

when I have it pointed to the wall.

As for the 100w highs, I have no problem, since the use of the highs are rarely longer than 1-2 minutes at the time(On/OFF).

I had them before I got the HID's too,and never had any problems.

Hi!

I've the same problem, don't you heard somebody had to do an upgrade changing the lowbeams with an other type different to bad e34 ellipsoids projector? (always maintaining h1).

The xenon lights potential brightness is restrain for the type of ellipsoid unlike the good free projection of higbeams!

Thankfully for answers

I have the same problem. have you heard of anyone who has to upgrade by changing the low beams with a type different from the inadequate e34 ellipsoid projectors (always keeping them h1)?

The potential brightness of the xenon is hindered by the ellipsoid type in comparison to the good free beam pattern of the high beams.
Thanks for any replies.

If you use HIDs in the Free-form lights, it will be a disaster--the beam gets scattered every which way and you can't see anything.

Are you Running US-ellipsoids with H1 bulbs? If so, that could be your problem--the H1 is a Euro-application, the US Ellipsoids were 9006s. An upgrade to Euro Smiley lenses might solve your issues. I see the first poster has supposedly smilies, though they might be Depos, which could be causing the problem. The Chilean poster though may have US ellipsoids and an H1 bulb, which wouldn't work right...

My car is made in Germany, WBA ...
It has the original euro Hella ellipsoids.
The highbeams are ok!
The lowbeams are a disaster!
I made an HID upgrade like this (see indirect , sorry i can´t put direct) and can´t to obtain
similar good pattern.

bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/HID.htm

You see:
"The only way to do this mod correctly is with US ellipsoids.
Euro ellipsoids will not work (metal housing cannot be modified correctly) and US non-ellipsoid gives a wide,
specular pattern with terrible throw (distance of beam projection). "
This is my problem, anyone can tell me wich is the exactly H1 us ellipsoid to replace lowbeams like:
"Rob Levinson '94 M5 3.8 Touring wiht HIDs in US ellipsoid headlights"
I can´t be more clear.

I think those would then be 9005/9006 HID bulbs, not H1 hids.

Yep. The U.S. Cars used 9006 lights. The Euro cars use H1. I have an H1 HID kit for my Euro Ellipsoids but haven't installed em yet.
