View Full Version : Has anybody put a 3.8 M5 engine in a e21
BIMMERBOYZ 05-11-2005, 02:18 AM I was wondering has anybody installed this engine in a e21. With almost 350 hp stock and easily 400 hp with a few mods this engine would be sick. If I was to install I would want the 6 speed also, How would you go about installing that? If you got a wrecked M5 for about 7,000 you would be set. Is this possible with out severe severe modification. Could you still use the rear end of a e21 or would you have to change it to the M5 and shorten everything. Some one with alot of money should do this if they already haven't and if they have I want to see it.
uberpanzer 05-11-2005, 06:18 AM Alpina (well actualy Dietel) did this back in the '80s...sorta. They took the M106 motor (3.5L Bix Six with a turbo from the factory that WE never got legally over here in the US) and installed it into the e21. 255hp stock, but crank the boost up with stock internals and you are pushing 400hp. Go with different internals and it starts looking like one of those monster Swedish motors. They modified EVERYTHING on the drivetrain of that car though, so not much was left that was e21. And I'm not sure if they dialed up the boost any in THAT car, although the e23 745i guys do all the time (car that motor originally came in).
BTW, the M5 with the 3.8L S38 did NOT come with a 6spd. It made due with a lowly 5spd. Poor baby.... :(
jjgbmw323 05-11-2005, 06:59 AM A guy over here a schneller BMW tuners Mike Morris did this to his e30.
He spent somewhere in the order of 20k or more. Drivetrain, engine mounts, etc
It looks great, but that kind of money U can do alot with other than this
Its all engine.
The other car that I like even better is an e30 with a V*8 in it
Damon is putting my 2.8 liter stroker into my 323i
later,

djminkin 05-11-2005, 08:24 AM The grey Alpina B6 without the stripes on it in the alpina fans thread, has a 3.5 engine it.
djminkin 05-11-2005, 09:56 AM woops sorry I thought the thread said3.5 engine. That would be a nice set up though. E21 with a M5 engine, wow
BARRY E36 M325 05-11-2005, 03:02 PM there is an issue of BMW SCENE live that has a hide body E21 with an M5 motor. I'll try and scan in a photo tomorrow at my GF's house. you won't like the car color though. It's pink and white like a barbie car and interior is black with blueish racing seats. But the motor bay looks sick!!!
Frank Fahey dropped one into his E30 M3... Took TONS of custom fab.
blitzed310 05-11-2005, 06:14 PM I did!
Then I woke up in a puddle of drool :stickoutt
Euro Trash MAX 05-12-2005, 10:15 AM I have an early 90's 3.5l in my 81 baur.

Yes, looks very tight.
AS with the m5 conversion, the 3.5 liter also puts a lot more weight in the front end of the car. You also need to hack the front radiator vallance and push it foward.
Its cool. But I would rather put in a m20 custom 2.8 or 3.0 stroker.
The weight distribution is better, fits the e21 better, and there are many mods you can do to the m20.
What is the HP, torque and weight of the 3.5 liter?
Did you upgrade the springs and shocks over that of a normal 323i?
Euro Trash MAX 05-12-2005, 06:06 PM I did not do the conversion. It was like that when I got it. Not sure on the #'s....
All I know is that it's all pulled out right now. There was a slight meltdown in the engine bay from the previous owner.
I have another 3.5 ready to go in. Just have to grease up the car and try to get it in there.... ha ha.
BARRY E36 M325 05-13-2005, 02:24 PM EURO TRASH, what happened to your fuse box?
Euro Trash MAX 05-16-2005, 09:34 AM good observation... barry...
here's the story. the car is pretty much perfect and has about 20000miles on it. the previous owner always had overheating problems. hence, he stopped driving it regularly. just to keep things in good shape he'd kick it on about once a month or so. on the month in question... ha ha.... he did the usual routine, but forgot about it running and left for NYC for a few weeks....therefore..... it got a little hot under the hood if you can imagine!!! lucky he didn't burn down the garage and house. i think the motor killed itself when the main wiring harness melted through and arc'd against the block. luckily.... there was about 8 gallons of gas still left in the tank.
my brothers and i have been bugging the guy about the car since he got it. one day we were at dinner and i mentioned the car and he told me i could have it for nothing!!! the car is still very clean inside and out. other than a slightly cooked engine bay.
i tried salvaging the motor with a little success. got it running again. then disaster struck. i think one of the major oil ports in the head got clogged.... screeeeeee.... sounded like a lathe under the hood. then one of the rocker arms snapped off.... ugh!!
so i pulled the old burn motor out and have a new(to me, not to the world) motor ready to go in. i've been contemplating a newer 3L or 3.2L M-motor instead so the project sits in limbo....
good story??

this guy has one
BIMMERBOYZ 05-18-2005, 01:53 AM That car is sick. So sweeet I thought about putting that engine in my car and still thinking.
fjord7302 05-18-2005, 11:51 PM Do it! I have an S38 i'm pullung out at the end of this month or begining of June. Has a burnt exhaust valve though and 200k. So it would have to be gone through.
