Eric -
Congrats on going IP! Be happy to crew for you if needed.
BTW, the Carbotechs were terrific in this year's One Lap. I'm a convert.
Will you be coming over to RRT on Saturday? If so, will see you there.

dcardenas 05-10-2005, 10:09 AM Are the visors black? Also, are coupe and sedan visors the same? I imagine they would be.

Preppy 05-10-2005, 11:48 AM Wonger, headliner....is it black? I want it, how much?
And the harnesses, are they clip in or bolt in?
magnetic1 05-10-2005, 12:02 PM The Schroth is bolt-in. Not that mig of a difference anyways. You can move it to the side when youre not using it and the rear part clips in so if you undo that, ppl can still sit in your backseat.
The headliner is in perfect condition and is black.
Matt, the OBC is missing no pixesls from the "data" part. ONly a "line" from the date/time area.
Vader price is $650 including rear seats (free).
Neil, THANKS!
Sunir, can't wait. I think O-fest will be more fun as I know VIR better... but Im HOPING the car will be done by 8/20. There is still that pesky issue of actually getting my rookie license.
csd04 05-10-2005, 12:21 PM Do you still have the lug wrench?
How about the plastic parts that hold the jack in place in the trunk?
Thanks,

Not to be a wet towel here, but I doubt that you're going to remain at BSP-legal weight after removing all this stuff + the sound-deadening material. The cage and battery will put back some of that, but I'm more pressed to see you weigh in before you run BSP.
The thing is that if you don't remove this stuff, you'll be overweight for IP. If you do, you'll be overweight for BSP. Your call...

I'll weigh the car. You have to also factor in that it's BSP legal to remove AC and sunroof. So that cant be part of the calculations. Furthermore, I had already agreed to run ballast weight if it came in too low for BSP. This was all in emails that transpired between you, Matt, Bill Collins and myself. But like I said in prior emails, if there were going to be issues, I would happily move to a different class. I was looking to avoid the type of animosity that James got and tried to convey those thoughts early on so I could move to the appropriate class if needed.
Please tell me NOW if this is an issue because I dont want to be hal;fway through the season before people start calling me names and protesting me when I could have easily moved to Mod.
Your email response to me (Tue 5/3/2005 12:18 PM):
Eric,
I'd hate to lose another competitor, so I'd like for
you to you stay in BSP.
However, I also want the playing field to be
reasonably even. If your IT-spec car weighs in at a
decent number and isn't grossly underweight compared
to the rest of ours, then it's all good.
Glenn
My reply (Tue 5/3/2005 1:13 PM):
Im pretty sure the car will end up weighing more, but if it shows low when I weigh it, I'll add weight for autocross.
To which there was no objection. And now since those guys are at each event weighing cars, it's even easier for me to "prove" my weight. Hell, I'll even add weight to weigh MORE than you or Matt if it's that big of a deal. I'd even offer to PAY to weigh your car and Matt's car just to be sure. I just dont understand the sudden change in tone or view. I knew this was going to happen and its partially my own fault for wanting to continue running with everyone.
No change, dude...just stating what I did in my original response to you. To repeat myself, if the car "isn't grossly underweight compared to the rest of ours, then it's all good."
If you meet the 3048 lbs. minimum (with driver), that means the car alone weighs around 3000 lbs. ;) That's certainly acceptable for BSP, so let your conscience be your guide.
magnetic1 05-10-2005, 01:16 PM Furthermore, this whole thing started because of the whole screwed up classing system. For those who do not know, if you prep a car to IP/IT spec it WOULD be legal for Street Prepared. Only problem is, there is no national SCCA IT classing for the M3. That's where this all came about... just like a E36 3 series that is an ITS car would be legal for DSP.
I asked for opinions and got the above response. I even offered to add weight. Im just fumed now because of the sudden change in attitude... or maybe Im just being too sensitive and FREAKING OUT!

Glenn... if you want to bump my FS ads.. all you need to do is say ^bump. Though all this drama does bring added attention to the thread... so thanks in advance if parts get sold because of the extra coverage.
My car already weighs well under 3048 in BSP form. I think the last time I weighed it, it was 2850 (minus rollbar and empty tank). So my problem wont be weight REDUCTION, it will be weight ADDITION.
No need to be all sensitive, no need to be upset. Quite simply, you did ask for opinions, I offered mine. The thing that you seem to forget is that it's a valid concern...hardly trivial considering the win margins over the last 3 years.
Also, it's not because of the screwed-up rules, Eric...it's because you're trying to tailor the car for one series yet hoping to remain legal for another.
Chill, think about the point I'm trying to make, make your decision, and stick to your guns afterwards.
Oh, yeah...bump for a good seller! ;)

NoSoup4U 05-10-2005, 02:06 PM The rollcage should add approximately 160 lbs IIRC ... (assuming non-nascar style sidebars for driver side -- and assuming 1.5x120 DOM tubing) -- that's what I was told (give or take 30 lbs).
JD should give you a good idea of what the IP car can weigh in at -- but, from what I hear, JD believes that my car, weighs A LOT LESS than his SM car, and will do so, even with the rollcage.
From my experience on the ASP side of things, even though people may tell you that it is "okay" verbally -- I put them in a hard position b/c we were friends. They did not want to be the a$$ and tell me no, I should not run.
But, they are right, if you are outside the rules, regardless, you need to run it in the proper class. Hence, people in IP bend the rules -- but, if it is not allowed, you should not do it. The spirit of competing requires you to comply with the rules even if everyone else is bending them. A BSP car is typically around 3300 lbs with driver (I think) -- so, if you are at 3048 lbs -- that's a lot of weight you are saving over a typical BSP driver. Even though the E36 M3 is rated at 3175 lbs, we found that 96+ models typically weighed more than 1995 models, and ones that were optioned were around the 3300 lb range WITH racing seats.

Okay, Amod is mine then :mad
You can fight over EM and BM :stickoutt
Well, I was thinking, if all of us go into EM, that makes six total drivers. That would result in two trophies, correct? Unfortunately, Eric is the better driver, so, you should consider upclassing into AM -- then, let Pete, Jason, myself, and Gary fight it out over EM. That would be fairer I think in terms of driving ability and skills. If pete starts whupping ass -- have him come up to AM with you and have you two duke it out ... Jason, myself, and Gary can duke it out in EM then.
Gary was telling us that there are 2 drivers in EM right now (himself and someone else). Although, he highly encouraged Pete and I to stay in SM2 w/the E46 M3 -- he really did not want people coming into EM -- he even tracked down the head steward to get us a ruling on whether we could stay in SM2 or have to move into EM :stickoutt

Bend over and cough, BITCH!
magnetic1 05-10-2005, 03:14 PM ok.. more fuel to the fire... I emailed Doug Gill (National SCCA Tech)... he says:
Hi, Eric,
The 3rd paragraph of Section 15 says, "Cars listed as eligible in and prepared to the current national Improved Touring rules are permitted to compete in their respective street prepared classes."
The problem as I see it is it states that the cars should be listed (the M3 is not) in the National Rules. You can probably run your M3 in a Regional ITE class, but it doesn't meet the criteria to be eligible for Street Prepared. Regional classes also can vary from Region to Region.
Your SCCA Region can allow your car to run in BSP as an IT car (Section 1.1), but it wouldn't go at a Divisional or National Solo event.
Another thing to consider is check on the changes you make in your car and maybe only do those that are also BSP-compliant. That way you'd still be OK in BSP. There are a lot of things you can do that would keep your car as a BSP car.
But I don't see how a full IT-prepped M3 would be legal in BSP.
Wish I could be more helpful.

NoSoup4U 05-10-2005, 03:27 PM food for thought - my bsp car weighs approx. 3050 with my current setup.
I find that REALLY hard to believe Matt ... you have the entire interior, a rollbar (should add at least 80 lbs) -- plus, no real weight removal other than seats. Are you sure the scales were accurate?
3050 lbs with YOU in the car -- that's friggin amazing ... (how much gas?)
An IP car needs to be 3048 lbs with driver -- so, you are at an IP weight
But, if it is 3050 without you in the car -- is 160-180 lbs going to make a big difference in autocross, vs. an IP weight WITH driver of 3048 lbs?? That's for you guys to fight out ... ;)
You have to consider, even IF the IP driver adds weight, he can add weight to where it helps him, thus, perhaps, if the BSP guys allow Eric in, you guys should be able to dictate where the ballast goes rather than Eric, perhaps?
I think 3050 lbs. is the car's weight without the driver.

sunir 05-10-2005, 10:53 PM Hey now... that's just about 4 hours worth of work... this shit is TIME consuming! :mad
yeah it is time consuming...took us a while to get the interior of my car the way I wanted...there is about 60 lbs of wiring you can remove...the trick is figuring out how to rewire the car ;)
also, get heat gun (or dry ice) and start taking out the sound deadening, use varsol of laquer thinner to clean things up...this is some nasty work but it'll be nice when the interior is ready for the cage to go in...
NoSoup4U 05-10-2005, 11:19 PM Looks good Eric! Took you four hours? I think it took JD 40 minutes :stickoutt

Just a warning to magnetic, as I'm not sure what wiring Sunir has removed...be careful about removing wiring as it's not mentioned anywhere in the rules. Based on the Prepared interior rules, my personal interpreation is that you could remove the wiring for the NAV, Stereo and Heat/AC systems, and no more.
C. Interior may be removed, except dash and door panels providing the car “conforms to the spirit” of the BMW CCA Club Racing Program, i.e., it is aesthetically pleasing. Driver and passenger side door(s) panels may be altered or removed to accept side door impact bars. The OEM driver and passenger door panel(s) may be replaced with 0.060” aluminum or a comparable material, securely attached to the door, as per the most current SCCA Improved Touring regulations. Stock door and sunroof operating mechanisms are considered part of the interior and may be removed. However, any door adjacent to a seat equipped with seat belts or harness must be capable of being opened from both inside and outside of the car.
NOTE: Interior is defined to include carpeting, seats, headliner, sound deadening materials, trim panels (door panels), console, entertainment and navigation systems, speakers, sun visors, and the sunroof mechanism, if one is present. If the sunroof mechanism is removed, the panel must either be securely sealed (welded/bonded) or secured in place with two retaining straps 1 inch wide and extending 3 inches beyond the sunroof opening on each side. The panel must be flush with the roofline. The sunroof panel must be of the same materials as originally manufactured in Prepared and may be of any metallic or composite material in Modified/Super Modified.
D. All heating and air conditioning components may be removed as long as vehicle meets minimum weight specification.
I'd recommend getting a rules clarification before you go cutting wiring out of a Prepared car.
sardil 05-10-2005, 11:42 PM Hahah...now you guys will know better :)

this is correct...Bry brings up a good point...upon going over the rules carefully on my race car we removed every shred of wiring for the heat system, including the heater core (which is allowed according to Clement)...as well as the speaker pre-wires (yes the LTW had speaker prewires...since the interior was removed, we also removed wiring for lights and such devices which constituted interior amenities (i.e interior lights, OBC and such) also...the trick is tracing these wires back and eliminating them...there is weight savings to be had but the process is time consuming...

Hey, I just wanted to make sure you're in the right class, and yeah it's that damn shirt. :stickoutt I think I had the most fun driving last Sun. in that Miata. :redspot Maybe I should buy this. :evil2 http://www.activeautowerke.com/BMW_cars_4_sale/M318Ti/default.asp

just make sure you're within weight 'cause CR is cracking down on post race scaling of cars (especially top finishers within class)...remmember prepared cars are weighed with driver, stock class is not.
Also keep in mind that ITS E36 chassis cars are 2850 with driver and in HP, we are allowed to be 2832 w/ driver...although in IP the E36 M3 is to be 3048 if I recall correctly, there is a lot of weight to be lost, make sure you scale the car prior to a race weekend and use ballast as needed and where appropriate on the chassis.

sunir 06-02-2005, 12:28 PM eric the car is coming along well :) ...to those of you that think gutting a BMW is wrong, I think you should experience driving a race car at 11/10ths on a qualifying lap and then you'll understand why doing this to a BMW is right ;) ...these cars are meant to be driven hard on a track, that is where they belong and that is where they truly shine :) ...just my opinion :D :stickoutt

Eric the car's cage is looking good, seems like RRT is churning out the same design as they did on Arjun's cage...must be their hot setup for Prepared level/ITS type cars...although I suspect the Watt's cage will offer a better overall design since they are able to do more in modified classes.
