So as I was install my cheesy cold air intake I got for $40, I saw the stock snorkel and thought... what a great idea it would be to just cut it so the air will route directly where the filter sits. Basically the same way the stock filter gets the air.
Sounded like a great idea at first but... it's been about 3 days and my cel just came on...
I'm guessing too much air plus the darn extra oil I put on the filter probably gunked up my MAF causing the cel to trigger.
I'm an idiot... wtf was I thinking oiling up the filter some more...
Anyways... Going to try to clean the MAF tomorrow and wash the filter off of all the oil... Probably just going to very lightly apply a little bit of oil back onto the filter...
Hopefully I didn't mess up the 02 sensors or the MAF...
Anyways... I will keep you guys updated...

Too much oil on the filter seems to be a common cause of MAF failure. I've heard it's a good idea to oil the filter, then let it sit overnight before installing in your car.

Doubt it's the oil on the filter unless you oiled it up soo much that it was dripping. I bet it's something totally unrelated, just coincidental.

I know I try to be careful and not over oil it. Plus I try to vacuum away any excess oil from the filter before I re-install it.

well... cleaned the MAF sensor and the problem is still there... I'm guessing its the O2 sensors... Car just reached 95k miles I believe on the original O2 sensors... Should I just replace the precat ones or all?

I think you need to just get the code that's stored.

I think you need to just get the code that's stored.Think so too.
Many people over oiled the filter and got the same thing. Some said that the best thing to do is to oil it and then blow it out with an air compressor.

I oil my K&N very lightly after I clean it.Like a single drop every 1/2 inch.

Searched and it doesn't sound like a too bad of a problem (http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e39/search.php?st=P0173&dosearch=Search%21&ps=20&m=natural&o=default)

Problem fixed... thanks guys... Car idles very smooth now... I replaced all four 02 sensors... Also... :( The hose where the intake manifold is behind the fuel rail cover was busted...
I'm guessing that was the original problem... I never thought about removing the stupid fuel rail cover when I was checking to see if there was any leaks... Oh well... problem solved!
